It is immensely helpful to have you talk though the drawing-in process. To understand what you look for, as you make micro decisions about line placement, establishes some guidelines for process. Very grateful for this and would welcome more in the coming year!

Great to see this drawing technique. I had to learn this at uni, & I didn’t find it easy to simplify shapes, so more practice for me! This is very helpful, thanks Will

So happy that you've shared another lesson. Thank you for spending so much time on the drawing. I've also seen paintings done where the subject is quickly sketched in paint with no pencil drawing. Does the difference in a detailed drawing versus a paint sketch have to do with the style of finished painting you want to acheive? I have a reference photo of a man holding an apple out to an animal that I want to paint, but not sure if I should draw it first or go right in with a painted sketch.

Hi Sharon, pleased you enjoyed it. Yes, a painted sketch will be more fluid and painterly but would need a confident drawing level. You could try your painting as a small poster study first and try one drawing out with pencil and one with a brush to compare and contrast.

Thanks for the lesson. I hope it gets more loosened up in the next lesson because so far everything looks rather stiff for me to be honest :D
@willkempartschool4 жыл бұрын
Ha, ha, true. If you’re pretty good at drawing, then ideally you’d go straight in with your paintbrush and draw and paint at the same time, so you’re essentially drawing with your brush. That’s how you get the loosest, freshest paintings. But if you’re a complete beginner, then spending the time getting the drawing accurate is a more failsafe way of creating a painting that looks loose but captures the subject. It gives you the confidence to paint more loosely knowing you’ve got a good structure underneath. Cheers, Will
