My grandparents who were farmers in a southeast asian village ate white rice/glutinous rice 3 x a day. They were very lean and lived close to 100 w no chronic illnesses. There was no money for or shops selling processed food in the village. They ate alot of carbs but eveything they ate were either grown, caught or forraged by their very 2 hands.

Their huge amount of exercise would have used up the carbs’ sugar-element: in our modern times we take nowhere near as much exercise (& even modern farmers use tractors/machinery a lot unlike those 50 yrs ago who did more manual work)

@KyooriousDesi I agree. The 'problem' we created by processing and packaging food is also a solution for mass producing, long easy storage, and shipping easily to provide quick and easy food supplies around the world to starving populations. This was really helpful during and after world war 2. Problem is, we all rely on this processed food too much. It's so easy to buy and store.

In other words you have to go to bed almost hungry. The results are incredible. Your body functions revert to what they were when you were young, testosterone levels shoot up and your system seems like it’s doing its own housekeeping, conserving tons of energy.

Knowing what to cook, the choice of ingredients, etc, so I am taking the migration to low carb slowly. I eat breakfast at around 8 am and then lunch at 1 pm. This is working well for me. I used to feel a bit hungry in the evenings for the first two weeks (for a short period of 30 mins or so) but a green tea or lemon with salt and water helped ease the pangs. For me, this was the best video ever. At beginning of year I realized some success with vegetarian and IF. But was so very hungry (not realizing the hunger pains would pass). So tried Keto and admittedly inconsistent IF. And weight has increased. (Tons of animal protein is no longer appealing-made me feel blah). With this video I can walk more wisely concerning carbs. Best quote ever: “No one gets fat eating broccoli”! More confident pursuing vegan and IF. Your research and explanations are amazing and thoughtful. Thank You Dr. Fung!

I don't care that Berg is a chiropractor or a scientologist or has a store. I think he has great free advice on keto and intermittent fasting. I like that he emphasizes vegetables, unlike, say Berry, who advocates carnivore. He has excellent detailed videos on keto IF eating plans. I watched him for a long time without knowing he sold products, because he rarely mentions it. One thing I don't like is his stance on vaccines, but you have to separate the wheat from the chaff. He also did an excellent interview with Dr. Fung.

Thank you so much for all of your amazing information Dr. Fung. Since I started following you, Dr. Berg and Dr. Jamnadas, I am finally able to lose weight gained in the past few years and after knee replacement surgery. After trying EVERY plan imaginable, I started IF at the beginning of October, 2023. Fast forward to now, I have lost 12 lbs., going from 200 lbs. to 188. I am a 55 year old female who is going through menopause. I fast 16-18 hours per day and eat two meals a day without snacking, which means I'm also fasting in between meals. My goal weight is 165 so 23 lbs. to go. I am struggling with not getting enough fiber while attempting to eat low carb, as evidenced by bathroom trips. Adding legumes and lentils as you suggest in this video will help me tremendously. I'm in this for the marathon as opposed to a sprint. Thank you again!!!!

What will you eat after fasting? I regained the fluid in the cells very quickly on refeeding. So the fasting loss doesn't last. Followed up with keto as my go to diet usually but then I miss pasta, potato and ice cream. So lose the plot, then binge with guilt, terrible cycle. Also dieting following fasting is too much hard work and too much omitting of favourite foods. My longest fast was 16 days but I get cardiac arrhythmia each time I fast. The last time after 5 days landed in hospital. My doctor will not support my practising this although I loved it. Did it for autophagy. I gave up fasting this year and changed to doing omad 22/2 giving me a 2 hour eating window. I also decided to eat carbs and anything I wanted in that time including fry ups and desserts. Surprisingly this has allowed a slow steady loss..... 6 kg over the last 3 months. It's not hard to do since I'm not missing anything or focusing on what I 'can't' eat. Doctor also supports this, thankfully. I'm much happier and while weightloss is super slow it is never the less loss. Can have my donut and eat it to. Ha ha. Anyway all the best on finding what works for you.

Big media, big government, corporate food processors, and the pharmaceutical industry have billions of dollars to promote their cheap processed carbohydrates because they are making billions of dollars from the peoples’ addiction to sugar and starches. I always look forward to Dr. Fung dropping knowledge. This particular video reminded me of the teachings of another fellow physician, Dr. William Davis, who is famous for the “Wheat Belly” diet. His argument, the wheat of today is not the wheat our ancestors ate, which ties in to the point Dr. Fung made in the beginning of the video as to why we didn’t see the same issues with weight back in the day while eating some of the same foods. I’ve always tried whenever possible to stick to single ingredient, natural foods vs. processed, despite what the carb content is. Enjoyed the rest of the breakdown as well from Dr. Fung. Very informative.

Anyone trying to lose weight should watch this video. I should like to point out that the fructose he refers to causes fatty liver and in large amounts is just as bad as alcohol. As a nephrologist, you know that the presence of oxalates in some of the most healthful veggies are a no-no for "stoners," i.e. kidney stone producers, such as I am. 😕 It's a challenge to balance veggies, dairy, meats also since I apparently produce uric acid stones too. In some ways, I suppose, just the less food for my kidneys to have to deal with, the better.

. Having been on a number of diets in the past, I've heard of other starchy vegetables to be aware of. Wondering if you'd mind giving your thought on that claim as well. - the claim: roots and seeds contain energy for plant regeneration and growth in the form of sugars and starches, therefore, limit intake of carrots, potatoes, beets, etc (roots) as well as corn, peas, legumes, nuts, etc (seeds). Many thanks on your work & teaching on time restricted eating. Combining this pattern of eating with low carb intake has finally given me the success I've worked on (unsuccessfully) for decades.

Excellent. If I could only recommend this to all these german speaking young women, struggling with dieting. Nevertheless allow me to correct your statement on beans and lentils. They are starchy. But the starch is amylopectine C while the usual starch is amylopectine A. The C typ is difficult to break down by our amylase: far slower digestion. I put that in practice by only eating little (40 g cooked mass) of the amylopectine C group and none ever from the A group (but my biology is such that my insuline is "very nervous" more than average). Leafy greens are the king of my diet: colour, taste, texture, mood enhancing and a fantastic substrate for edle fats and oils. Dieting is fun.
