How to Lose Weight by Healthy Eating: New 1940's 4K Colorization

You are what you eat, was the message to these army girls in 1943. An AI colorized educational film.
While exercise plays an important role, the advice on healthy eating and following a balanced healthy diet, is hard to argue with. Though some of the food on the 1940's menu would probably not pass muster today.
"It's both what you eat, and how much, that counts!"
"Your body is a machine, which runs on fuel called calories. Calories which are not used for activity are stored in the body as fat!"
It also includes a piece on shape-wear. Don't rely too much on your girdle. Any foundation garment wears out with use. But your muscles do just the opposite!"
This is an edit from a War Department official training film, held by the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
Colorised by Glamour Daze using Delodify - a deep learning open resource based project.

@@kylarobinson287 most people are almost like this when they're in peak shape.. Imo... Not exactly... But stuff balances a LOT. I used to try to figure out why I never liked my hair and why my clothes didn't fit right "on me" then I was in sports and lost weight without knowing what was happening... Then I realized oh... It was the extra weight that made stuff seem to not work right or like there was something about "my shape" well.... It really was the extra fuel storage. I have it now. Lol. It makes life a pain. Like even walking is awkward... Thighs in the way and upper arms rubbing on torso. Boone fall toward me lying town and affect my breathing.. I like eating a lot though! So... I have some choices I've made. Lol 😁😀

@@youtubingbabs I don't think this is a correct statement at all. People have different body structures. Just look at many photos of very small girls. You can still find some with a "balanced" body, some with wider hips, others with wider shoulders than the rest of their body. The default is not large chest, small waist, and same size hips as chest.

@@kylarobinson287 I know... Not quite to that cartoon perfection... I just mean... I think their point is everyone gets more balanced with a healthy weight and toned muscles. Weight gain brings out more variations.. Like if you're apple, you're more apple. Same with pear etc... But yeah... Those drawings do create a magical effect.... But I'm filtering it with the understanding b they're drawings. But look at before and after of weight lifters male and female...you'd be surprised how much everyone ends up kind of looking the same...when their fat gets low and all their muscles are in form. Building muscles and lowering body fat makes pppl s bodies look more similar to a "norm" imo. I'm not saying it looks better... I love variety!! Just saying... It does kind of homogenize.. Wev just don't understand It's not a body type as much as you think than a condition of a body. We all really have mostly the same muscle and bones underneath. It's fat+ hormones that really varies the most. As far as the way curves pay out. But totally not as uniform as those hourglass cartoons. Or like thec rockettes. Lol

I think the main reason why obesity is so prevalent in modern society is because of the unnecessarily huge amounts of added sugars in about every food. It is said that sugar lights up the same parts of your brains as cocaine, which means foods with added sugars are more addictive. This explains why we keep eating more and more. Besides that, we also sit around for long hours: you sit in school, sit when you do your homework and then the day is over and you go sleep. And between all that we drive cars and take public transport. I haven't even mentioned office jobs.....

@@AvonnaVentura right now I've found some sugar free ice cream and little chocolates to satisfy my cravings. They have xylitol as a sweetener. It's not perfect but it helps. Some people react differently to this ingredient, so you have to research it and test how it acts with your body. Monk fruit sugar is also supposed to be better. Of course I only take these in very small quantities and only when cravings get bad...you also have to watch out for processed food, fast food, etc as sugar is in all of these. If you wanna take baby steps I recommend cutting out sugar in your drinks. So juices, pop, energy drinks, coffee, etc. since they hide so much sugar in drinks and we quickly consume them.

My grandmother said in the 40's lunch was a sandwich with 2 thin slices bread, 2 ounces meat or spread, 1 cookie, thermos of coffee, and a small piece of fruit if you had money. For dinner she served 1/2 cup soup, 1 lettuce wedge with dressing, 3 oz meat, potato or homemade noodles, and green vegetable (2/3 cup). Breakfast was 1 egg, 1 thin slice of toast, and tea or coffee. If she served juice it was 4 ounces only. She said most people walked, most housework was done by hand without machines, laundry was hung out to dry, and you walked to shop. She said small proportions of everything was eaten and food rationing during war efforts contributed to establishing portion sizes. She also said people rarely ate out. We have huge portions now and bounce from one fad diet to the next. We also have a ton of chemicals in our food supply and everything is highly processed.

And we were all skinny as models. No need to go on a diet.

I think it's because what we think of as a serving size has changed so much since then
@RPD-zo5cj
@RPD-zo5cj 3 жыл бұрын
Its definitely because of serving size rather than the item in question. If you look at old tea sets and glasses, cups, kitchen ware, that includes saucepans, pots casserole dishes. Much smaller than it is now. We're now living in a world of "The bigger the better & more bang for your buck." Rather than quality, no matter if its food or materials. This is the trouble most don't realize especially when dieting, most of the time its not the item, its your portion control. Mayo is fattening because of the egg, but egg is still healthy as long as your not eating dozens. Everything we eat must be in moderation, this is why a lot of people suffered with the gluten free diets and put more weight on rather than lost, because of the severe cut in dietary repetition. Potatoes are fattening yes, but they give a lot of energy and fill you up which saves you getting hungry in the middle of night and looking for snacks, that no doubt have loads of sugar in them due to our 'three meals a day, then dessert after dinner.' Outlook on life. Edit: No doubt its also because of all the added preservatives, chemicals hormones and GMO's that we're constantly using. Everything has a much longer shelf life than it ever did before. Its all less fresh, even some fruits have added sugar in their growth cycle so people can taste it better due to all the other highly refined sugars we're currently eating on a daily basis. If we lowered our sugar intake and preservatives, our bodies would be much healthier.

@@raindrops4788 the words used back then that were complimentary were "slim" or "slender" . I was born 1963, nearly everyone was slim in my teens, I can only remember about 3 girls who were chubby in my high school. They were about a UK 14. There were no obese girls out of the 200 pupils. My one major issue is talking about curves "falling in the right places" literally everyone has different body types. Also exercise "bulking up the skinny girl" isn't fully accurate. If the "skinny girl" isn't eating enough after exercise, then she wont bulk up

This information about calories and the imagery is truly the most straight forward I’ve seen in all my days. I needed this when I was being educated in the public system. I didn’t know what a calorie was, nor that food gave energy, or contained vitamins. I didn’t know that all food could make your fat. I only vaguely knew.
