Do you have any tips for losing weight with mountain biking? Let us know 👇

If i'm pushing for fitness (summer) i just go and ride *every day* shooting for around an hour. An intense riding day followed by a day of a more casual recovery ride, enough to just get my juices flowing + i always have a water bottle at hand, wherever i go. I'll monitor my food intake _(basically: no junk food + a salad to finish off the day)_ along with it, get a good night of sleep and i can see the progress. No pressure, no science! 🤙🏻

Not really a tip, but my personal experience: Since I went on a full plant based diet (or vegan whatever you want to call it) my body has become more balanced, recovery is quicker, my physical condition went up, and I am "drying up" i.e. less fat and losing weight.

Best tip I can give anyone is bulk cooking: A) prepare your own food using good ingredients: I tend to go for 85-90% rice and veggies with the remaining portion being meat, but any protein source will do. B) whip up a large portion of food once a week/two weeks and store it in small containers in the freezer. C) How much food you put in each container lets you experiment _consistently_ with how much energy you actually need throughout the day - it’s actually a lot less than many people tend to think (My main meal of the day fits into a small, 0.5 liter freezer container). Experiment with smaller portion sizes until you’ve found the right balance. With the right portion size and exercise your stomach shrinks to its normal size over time and you won’t feel hungry as easily, and smaller portions will also satiate that hunger. D) Eat at the same time every day and stick with it - consistency is key. E) Remember to drink water throughout the day - if your body is thirsty, it will send a signal to your brain that you’re hungry, since it can’t tell the difference. F) If your normal ’fuel’ intake is of good quality, you’ll crave sugar and easy energy much less. If you can’t cut sugar out entirely, give yourself one cheat day per week - same day every week, no exceptions - and no more. This coupled with consistent exercise throughout the week is a darn good way to start.

The video has good info for people that have always been healthy, but is NOT good for people that are insulin insensitive. If you are insulin insensitive, it is CRITICAL that your carbs before your ride, especially your breakfast, do NOT have carbs that will cause your body to produce insulin before your ride or that your insulin or sugar spikes during your ride. Also, the concept of burning more calories than you consume may make sense thermodynamically, but it DOES NOT make sense for an approach for humans to lose weight. This has been borne out by multiple studies of diets that found the net result of attempting to lose weight this way is WEIGHT GAIN! Humans are complex machines with many different feedback mechanisms, and feedback systems are often counter-intuitive. As an example, if you live in a modern house and it feels cold, you don't add heat with a portable heater, you adjust the feedback system. If you add a heat with a heater in the room with the thermostat, your house will get colder. Humans are far more complex than a single feedback house heating system, yet we pretend that it is open loop. That does not make sense. The truth is that we are not all the same. Young people that are training have huge food requirements every day and can benefit from carbing up at night. Our needs and bodies are all different. I am now 55 years old. I have been biking for many years, and I exercise much less than I used to but finally succeeded in losing weight by throwing out all of the normally accepted conventions such as burning calories and balanced diets and exercising harder and longer. When young, you may be need to carb up after a workout to be able to do a big workout the next day, but when you are old and not training for competition, your overall amount of work required is much lower. In that case, it is not helpful to carb up at night. When you are old and not training, you don't need carbs in the evening. I won't explain everything here, but I ensure that I don't have enough carbs to cause my insulin to go up before a ride. I will take some carbs with me and eat right at the beginning of a ride (blueberries or a banana etc.) and I will have some clementines or some other fruit during the ride. Even if you are trying to burn fat, it is important to fuel your ride, but you don't need to provide ALL of the fuel for the ride. Some of the fuel for the ride will come from your stored glycogen, but you don't want to starve your body during the ride as that will trigger hunger for a binge-eat when you are done and may hurt your body. This advice does not go for rides over 1 ½ hours, but I don't do too many of those any more at my age. After the ride, my body does NOT need carbs, but needs protein and all of the building blocks, so I don't recommend pasta for dinner UNLESS you are seriously training and ride a lot every day. When you are older and want to lose weight, the point of the training is to stimulate your body for health, but you lose weight over the entire day if your body is healthy. The exercise is just part of being healthy, not for burning calories. Also, when you are older, try to vary your activities as healing takes much longer and it is easy to over-use or damage part of your body. So don't try very long hard workouts to burn calories, especially if that causes binge eating or a long recovery period. In addition, since you can't work so hard when you are older, there is no way to exercise to make up for eating badly or over-eating. You MUST eat healthy food and not over-eat. Don't think of exercise to burn calories to make up for food. Instead, think of exercise as just a necessity to stay healthy. Consistency is especially important when you are older (not the same exercise every day, but you can't do a week's worth of exercise just on the weekend).

@@funkydisciple I have done up to 5 hours at a low to medium intensity, and 2 hours medium to high intensity. It takes time to get fat adapted enough to go longer or to a higher intensity. As mentioned by another commenter, the body needs time to make the adaptations. After awhile, the body prefers fat as a fuel sparing glycogen for higher intensity intervals. Recovery from fasted workouts is fantastic. No sugar hangover , less inflammation , rehydration is quick. I find don’t need to carry as much water as I used to. Take an electrolyte and start easy. Under 1 hour, you probably can get away without the extra electrolyte if you are eating really well and the workout isn’t super high intensity or long.

I have done my best when I don't look at food as food. Get into the mindset that food is not a reward but rather a fuel a necessity so you can ride. You DON'T get to eat you HAVE to eat, see not a reward but rather another thing you must do to ride MTB. Works for me, down just over 300 from 400 lbs. Now I get to ride a full squish lol.

Its been a hair over a year since I first got my hardtail (Roscoe 6). My goal was to lose weight since home workouts and the gym bore me and left me unmotivated. Adding a strength training regimen has been foundational for me as my sporting activities have evolved over the years. Muscle is a calorie-burning engine that demands fuel, and there's no better way to lose fat than to maintain muscle mass and eat right. While you can certainly gain muscle and lose fat from MTB alone, I like to maintain a program that keeps my weight optimal even without MTB, and then I can just boost calories / protein to accommodate my riding. Also, I would never consider giving up post-ride beers, and you don't have to if you do everything else right.

I have been following the keto diet for 10 months and picked up mountain back up in August. I have lost almost 90 pounds. Over the winter I’ve been using a smart trainer to keep my fitness level up. One thing I make sure to do every ride is have a good warm up. It’s about three and a half miles to get to my off road trails. I ride at about 70% on a paved surface before dropping in. This helps the muscles get nice and loose so you don’t get a strain. I use the same the and a half miles on the way home as a cool down only going a about 50-60%. Don’t forget to do some stretches after the ride. Post ride is also a great time to do a few pushups and sit-ups for upper body strength. Great show Martyn!

I’ve had great success this winter shedding weight, by riding 3 or more days a week, if possible, for at least 1.5 continuous hrs. at a time. I also believe you need to do a couple of 2.5-4 hr., steady state rides, just to clean out the body’s sluggish fitness and get some base aerobic hrs. of fitness in. That will kickstart your metabolism. Where I’ve run into a wall sometimes in maintaining consistent weekly rides, is obviously the weather. We have had a great winter here in the Hudson Valley of NY, just below West Point, being able to ride ALL winter long at Sterling Forest, with NO snow!

Definitely great big of advice guys 🤘 As a guide, if you're increasing activity you'll will need more protein than you are usually used to, for optimal recovery. As a rough guide you'll need around 1.5 x your bodyweight in kg = grams of protein (based on atleast 4-5 activity days) I'm very active, and weigh 80kg. Because of my activity levels I have roughly 150g of protein. On top of this, protein is harder for your body to break down than carbs, so your body burns more calories digesting it. There's more you could cover but as a basic guide, calories in/out, high protein, activity levels and patience/consistency 👊

Eating a balanced diet is key not only to burning fat but gaining muscle as well what I found works for me is eating a few smaller meals every 2 hours or so and then two bigger meals through the day with about 3 hours until I eat the next meal make sure you have proteins carbs and micronutrients (veggies, fruits, etc) with in your meals and if you have two little “cheat” things a day (a cookie or a few pieces of candy) it will really help with cravings Best of luck to you all!

Great summary. I think that for sprints I have one suggestion that has helped me lose quite a bit of weight and train. I think that doing a sprint loop with a small hill can be more effective since in EWS there are often little climbs and the small hill leads a small downhill that makes it more fun.

I have lost 20 kilos (45 pounds) in 4 months by cycling. As soon as the pandemic started I turned to biking to manage my stress. I started riding 32 kilometers every day (6am) on my mountain bike but on a paved road, I was still stressed, so I added an afternoon ride (6pm) also for 32k. I ride a total of 64k six days a week and after losing 20 kilos (45 pounds) I'm 5 kilos (11 pounds) away from my target optimal weight. With a sugar-less diet, patience and a twinkle of OCD :) I have managed to keep the riding regimen and loving it.

All good Martyn.....I would add that working within the ideal heart rate for weight loss is a good way to guide whether you are working hard enough...or even working too hard. Optimum weight loss as a goal is different to having ultimate fitness as a goal...at least until the weight loss is achieved. Up to 80% MHR is usually the recommended band for weight loss, but that MHR is different for everyone depending on their age and current level of fitness so needs to be found out first. The other thing is that if people have not ridden all winter ( or done any other substitute form of exercise) the routine you describe would possibly be counterproductive with a rather more gradual approach required until reasonable levels of fitness are restored.
@alajononon
@alajononon Жыл бұрын
I came to say this too. People need to be aware that different energy storage is used when you're working harder. So you can actually start breaking down muscle instead of fat. And it's not hard to get up in that anabolic range when MTBing. So higher protein is important. And trying to make sure you get some lower intensity in is also important. Having said all that, calorie deficit is still what matters most when not wanting to put on more fat weight and MTBing is an efficient way to make sure you stay in deficit while also being mindful of diet.

If I can't use my bike I go running 3 or 4 times a week (20 to 30km). I don't keep a special diet but i try to keep some Variation in what i eat and usually stop when i don't feel Hungry anymore( I rather have a small portion and a 2nd Helping if I'm still Hungry). In general I learned from my trainer when i was young to loose weight you should train longer time since the Body starts to convert Fat to Energy after ~45 min.

Nutrition is controversial by its nature. My thoughts on your recommendations 1) Cal In/Cal out- This theory is controversial. It is more important what you eat and when you eat. I completed a 40 day week on the Camino de Santiago this summer, walked avg of 25k/day at 5.3km/hr. according to my smartwatch, I consumer ~2500cal/day. I recorded my food using Fitnesspall ~1500cal/day. At 40days, I spent ~100,000cal and consumed ~60,000cals. In theory I lost 40,000cals/7,000cal (1kg weight loss)=6 kg. In reality my wife and I lost no weight. 2) Losing weight is one strategy but getting healthier is better. I mean whatever you eat, you nutrients (fat, protein and carbs) and your micronutrients (vita A, B, C, D, B12, zinc, magnesium, etc…) will impact on your quality of your health (cholesterol, inflammation, A1c, insulin sensitivity, hormones such as thyroid, liver, heart rate and variability, blood pressure, etc…) and how long you will live. 3) Binging and alcohol is bad for you especially your liver 4) There are 2 schools: carbs addicted or fat adapted. If you are carbs addicted, I agree with your recommendations, get the bars/gel that you want if you want to bunk and refill your body. Because you only have ~3,000 cal of carbs in your body, you need to eat often to replenish your body. 5) If you are fat adapted: breakfast is coffee with MCT oil or eggs, bacon, butter, 2 hrs before exercise. If you do more than 2 hrs intense biking, eat some nuts during the ride, lots of water/salt, black coffee is you stop for a pit stop. I have never bunked since I avoided carbs. 6) Lunch with meat/chicken mostly 7) Dinner with fish/meat and try to eat 3hrs before going to the best. 8) Eat 3x/day, no snacks unless you are biking 9) All the channels such as GMBM/GCN/GTN are UK based and recommend nutrition the way they have learned it. Eat more carbs, veggies and you will bet healthy. Today we have an obesity crisis and we believe exercise will save us. Nutrition is more important than exercise. Healthy is not just weight but also how your inside body is working efficiently. You cannot outrun a bad diet. 10) For the rest, I agree on your suggestions for the rides. 11) Maybe you could have added recovery / sleep- 8hrs minimum and try to get 2hrs of REM and 2 hrs of deep for higher muscle recovery

Or finally, create that crazy Hack or Bodge you have been thinking about for a while but not had the time to make. Easy to spot. Can you think straight? Are you thinking of something stupid or stupidly easy and don't know the answer? Are you unusually quite, not as chatty or just lost in the moment? Are you finding your nearly crashing a bunch or can't remember the trail you just rode. You probably are. Jelly legs are also a sign but the head going is one too. Same happens with no water so always have some spare fuel and water.

Hi Martyn, I have a question.. I was getting into dirtjumping, not even jumping tiny ramps and yesterday my back wheel slipped while going to my girlfriend's and broke my collarbone, I really can't see myself falling off a dirt jump without breaking myself in 100 pieces now and I don't think I'll be getting back into mountain biking or anything related... Any help here?

Start small. Learn to tuck and roll when you fall. Learn to fall some more. Learn to bail. Learn to get away from the bike. Most importantly learn to know where to fall to. Try always plan where your going to bail too.

Hey im a great fan of the channel just asking what might be wrong with my bike because everytime i go to the trails and after every post ride everytime i pedal is there's that rough feeling while pedalling but when i wash my bike it's back to normal again but even my bike is clean or even there's just a lilltle bit of dust or dirt after every trail ride that rough feeling keeps coming back but when i remove the chain and check the bb and cranks the bearings just feel good as new i also checked the hub its still moving freely and i just upgraded my whole drivetrain and hubs last 2 months ago isnt the short chain causing all this errors on my bike
@gmbn
@gmbn 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, It may be worth giving the pedals a service and also just double check that the BB is clean/greased and torqued correctly. Your local bike should be able to help assess this for you.

#askgmbn I recently serviced and replaced the bearings on a Formula hub. All good but when I tighten wheel back into frame, it is stiff going forwards and backwards. I find by loosening the end cap, rear wheel runs free but leads to thru axle loosening while riding. I'm would love to solve this issue. OBVIOUSLY 😎

Many people try that and fail. Calorie restriction often leads to a decreased metabolism. It’s about nutrients and insulin. Anything that increases insulin increases fat storage.
