@@jaysoncabral3347 Some tips: - Drink broth. This is a recommendation from Jason Fung's books. It can provide some nutrients. - Get some salt (which can be in the broth). Lack of salt caused my headaches in the past (and it's even more important when I workout and sweat). - Practice intermittent fasting; progressively increase the length. - Try multivatimins and multiminerals, to avoid deficiencies. - Drink more. Usually a lot of the water intake comes from the food (e.g. vegetables). When you fast, you should drink more to compensate.

I’ve lost 40 lbs in 3 months months with Keto and OMAD. Literally every aspect of my health is better. I’m 50, and I feel 15 years younger. Even my thinning hair seems to be growing back ffs. Before I found this, I asked my doctor for advise on weight loss. “Oh, you just need to reduce you fat intake and try some healthy snacks”. Jason, you’ve got your work cut out for you mate - most GP’s are absolutely clueless. Ironically, I probably would have gotten better advice if I’d had asked a doctor in 1940 on how to lose weight.😂

Does watching Dr. Fung’s content help you cope with hunger/cravings during your fast? Or have those not been a major issue during your fast? I have heard that hunger subsides at a certain point in extended fasting, but I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around that, in order to try a longer fast myself. It almost feels too good to be true. Any tips, greatly appreciated! :). Edit: What I can say is that for me (who hasn’t yet fasted longer than 16 hrs), I couldn’t initially even fathom fasting much longer than that; however, watching KZbin videos on Sten Ekberg’s channel, where he breaks down the specific added benefits as the fast is prolonged, has been getting me more and more interested in giving it a try!

@@Danielle-nz9tn watching Dr Fung helps motivate me to power through if I need it yes but honestly, after about 36 hours I'm just not hungry. I don't fast to lose weight anymore. I've been following Dr Fung and fasting for several years now. I used fasting initially to lose the excess weight after my 2nd child but now I do 16 hour fasts most days just to maintain the habit and keep me healthy. My Dad's a type 2 diabetic so I know my genes aren't the best to be eating all day. I also tend to fast for about 72 hours two or three times a year for the autophagy benefits. I think my main tip is to make it a habit. If you fall off the horse, get right back on it. Remember what's motivating you too, beyond your weight and appearance - do you have kids for example? Finally, if you're feeling hungry and wanting to break a fast, make yourself drink a hot drink before you decide whether or not you really are hungry. Chances are it'll pass.

@@Danielle-nz9tn Oh and I've maintained my initial weight loss for 5 years despite having a third child in that time. It's the easiest, most pain free 'diet' you will find. @Danielle-nz9tn
@Danielle-nz9tn Жыл бұрын
@@Lulusnotreadyforthis Thank you! That’s super helpful. I’m excited to try a longer fast and see what happens. I agree that it’s easier to fast than eat tasteless, boring food. I got into quite a routine of eating food that gave me no pleasure-and just felt like a pointless energy expenditure (like I could barely tolerate the process of chewing it!) just because I was overworking and had no energy to cook/meal prep, grocery shop or meal plan. It was miserable and completely joyless, except that I needed to eat because the hunger was unbearable (because I was insulin resistant and carb dependent, I’m sure). I so missed enjoying food and feeling satiated but still felt overwhelmed about meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, then having to do it all over again the next day. I tried various hacks to save time on cooking, etc.. But ultimately, I just don’t want to cook all the time, so fasting started making more and more sense. Even though I have only been fasting around 16 hours at a time, after doing it for several days in a row (maybe after a week or so), I felt all the aches and pains disappear, felt more limber, younger, more energetic, etc., in addition to losing some extra weight. I couldn’t believe it was so easy after the first couple days. I agree that maintaining a habit is the best strategy for most behavior change, so why would it be any different for fasting! Thanks a lot for the extra reinforcement!

I just did a 36! Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic. Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque. Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS. It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZqodZSar9R4qNU Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJeUm6qDl9uBrtk The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses. Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpa0epSLa9yjaNE Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4OwaXqIr9h8f8k Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJamkJp_h5eNZ5Y Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging. Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow. What breaks a fast? kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZK1faZ5pd2sadE Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period. Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle! kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHu4daiZd7ypatU Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice. I recently did a 3-day fast, after 6 months on a carnivore regimen. It couldn’t have been easier. Amazingly, I wasn’t hungry at all, I could’ve done another 24 hours, but chose not to do so. But I was absolutely amazed that I had zero hunger those 72 hours. I felt fantastic. I made sure I drank plenty of electrolyte water. Also, I did my daily morning mile walk too. On one of those 3 days I even did an extra walk in the evening as well, before the sun went down. A few days later I did a three day trip by car, and ate once per day. Full fasting works, as does intermittent fasting, as does eating once per day. It’s all so much easier since I switched to the nutrient dense diet that is carnivore. I never would have lasted 3 days on my former diet that was healthy and free of junk food BUT revolved around whole grains, etc. , so I was always hungry. Now, on carnivore, I’m never hungry!! And fasting is easy!

What I like about Dr. Fung's videos is that he freely gives his knowledge in way a layperson can understand. He is not trying to set me up to sell me some type of magical powder, drink or pill that I need to take to practice fasting. With so many of these health and fitness videos by other creators on KZbin after a few minutes into the video they are suddenly trying to sell you some product. They spend the first part of the video telling us why we need something and then magically they produce this product that fulfils that need. That to me, is a major conflict of interest; however, Dr. Fung is just here to share his knowledge with no extra strings and that tells me I can more readily trust what he is saying.

This has changed my life. The high flexibility of this lifestyle is changing how I focus on important tasks that improve my life and how much control I have over my health. The clarity that you have provided as to how my body actually works vs how my parents and school system fed me and how doctors have advised me in the past. Until I saw your video no one had ever explained the hormonal response to eating. I've been pre-diabetic for years and doctors just advise, "Cut 500-600 calories and don't eat junk food." And when I would keep a strict food journal and work with them they would still say, "You're doing something wrong or you would be losing weight." So, I started working out every M, W, Friday, and every other Saturday, 2 hrs, with 1 hr of weight training and 1 hr of cardio. I lost 7 lbs in a year. In a YEAR. The doctors then said, "Well, it seems as if you have crap genes. That happens." I'm not exaggerating here. A DOCTOR said to me, "you have crap genes." Most of the recommendations made me feel hopeless, exhausted, and lacking control over my health no matter what I did. To now see why scientifically, I was on a path to failure is just so uplifting. To understand how to *properly* apply a restricted eating schedule while still eating the healthy food I always liked eating and see IMMEDIATE results from my efforts is glorious. During 47 days of doing intermittent fasting *correctly* I've lost 14 lbs. More importantly, I feel great. I'm sleeping much better. I walk every other day and I'm just enjoying the extra time *not* eating has given me. Thank you Dr. Fung for advocating for time-restricted eating. You've given me so much hope and agency that I can control my health by feeding my body correctly by controlling how often I eat.

I think most of us have gone through this nonsense with docotrs, but this is something that actually works! Dr Fung you changed my life after I ran across your videos. I’d given up after years of dieting my way to 260. At 65 I resigned to my weight. After 16/8 w 36-48 hrs 3-4 x month. I lost 60 lbs in 6 mo. And I loved it! Easier to not eat than to count calories. Just prayed to learn to enjoy black coffee and tea. I now prefer it. Everything is better and it’s not about beauty but about health. And it’s FREE!! God bless you

The wake up call for me was learning that the issue was insulin. My doctor had me injecting insulin every morning to overcome my insulin resistance. Luckily I had the grey matter to buy Dr. Fung’s book. I threw away the insulin syringe and went into intermittent fasting with a focus on a lower carb diet. Nothing else changed. Within 12 months my A1c went from 11.5 to 6.2 and I also lost 12kg. There has been no rebound and I’ve continued to maintain good blood values as well as stable weight. I’m deeply indebted to Dr Fung for these outcomes.

It's amazing that all the advice they give use is so wrong. Criminal really. Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers over time with extended fasting and rise from dieting Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Is fasting just the same as caloric restriction? No! Dieting increases the hunger hormone ghrelin while fasting decreases it and has many other health benefits! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYfPXqGfoc2KgsU When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. Your comment makes me so happy and so angry at the same time!! I am appalled that the medical establishment still operates under the myth that insulin is the answer to insulin resistance. And I am exceedingly happy whenever I read a post like yours that gives specific numbers and anecdotal evidence of the impact of intermittent fasting. It gives us so much hope. I hope you really stuck it to your sadly misinformed doctor instead of just not going back to him/her. These doctors have to see the numbers themselves to believe it. The tide of misinformation has to turn toward critical thinking. I know this is what they are taught in medical school as the standard for diabetes treatment, but where is their critical thinking?! Doctors should be committed to providing education about intermittent fasting as a realistic strategy for fat loss and blood sugar regulation. At the very least, if a doctor prescribes insulin, they should provide very straightforward education about the limits of insulin in diabetes management and the effects it has in causing obesity and insulin resistance. In which case, this should leave the patient and the doctor to contemplate together if this is the best course of treatment. That opens up the opportunity for a more informed understanding of the positive impact of behavioral change, i.e. time-restricted eating. As patients start seeing the benefits in terms of weight loss and feeling better, they may even feel more empowered to change what they are eating, if that’s also a problem. Edit: I also think that part of the problem is that doctors are often overbooked and as a result tend to not want to spend more than 10-15 minutes with their patients these days, so how do they have time to really educate their patients? But they could at least keep Dr. Fung’s books on hand in their clinic, even a flyer about intermittent fasting benefits, and recommend patients check out the book and/or the easier-to-digest (no pun intended!) KZbin videos.

@@Danielle-nz9tn Yes, doctors here in Japan are extremely overworked. Fully booked and barely time for a quick break during the day. Consultations are short, 5 - 10 minutes max and the patient isn't encouraged to ask many questions. For the past two and a half years I have been visiting the same diabetes "specialist" for a full urine and blood work analysis every 3 months. Each visit she is amazed at my numbers and cant believe I'm not on any medication. She freaks out when the results show any signs of ketones. At first that also concerned me until I read that ketones are more likely an after effect of low insulin induced fat burning and not a signal of impending ketoacidosis. Dr. Fung's books are available in Japanese and during my last medical checkup I recommended to my doctor that she buy a copy. Your suggestion of placing books and flyers in the waiting room area is a good one and I can see the benefits. But from my simple observations, here's the thing. A great percentage of the patients are elderly and appear to be reluctant to make the necessary lifestyle changes. They believe the Doctor is a god and that for so long as the "meds" are available, they can carry on as usual. Also, the hospital I visit is a very large metropolitan hospital with its own diabetes wing. Such institutions seem to have hardwired their treatment policy based on decades old and outdated understandings of the disease and approved treatment options. The mantra seems to be one of pumping the patients full of insulin and metf**n. I can imagine that any bright eyed and bushy tailed doctor will quickly realise that pushing the envelope would be a career limiting move. It is difficult to imagine how changes in treatment options can be implemented under these circumstances.

@Kyarrix
@Kyarrix Жыл бұрын
I would be careful citing willpower. Willpower cannot continually be drawn on, that's one of the points that Dr Fung makes. If you rely on willpower and make it a contest eventually you will fail and when you fail you'll feel bad and that can start a negative cycle. Instead make it about consistency. Consistency, regularity, routine. Eat real food, avoid processed foods, stay away from pro-inflammatory processed oils, get reasonable exercise and good sleep. I'm glad he changed your life, he's done the same for me. Do you feel that you're still having to utilize willpower though? Or at this point has it become easier for you? Foods that I used to want to eat, I no longer want to eat because I know that they aren't healthy. I'm not talking about ice cream or homemade baked goods. Those will always require a degree of willpower as you said, but things like fast food? I don't find myself wanting to eat that stuff because I know that it is pro-inflammatory and unhealthy.

@@texas2far I'm not sure why you're being defensive or doing the ummm thing. That was one of my points, that relying on willpower is not going to be effective long-term for most people. It turns it into a contest, it's a cultural thing in the US. Willpower, strength, suffering, the struggle. The idea that losing weight has to involve willpower and be painful or difficult causes people to shy away from it. The point that Dr Fung makes is that we don't have to do that to lose weight. Willpower is a term that is most frequently used in connection with calorie restricted diets, the diets that fail.

"Willpower" is what makes calorie counting work as well. He's all but ignoring calories mattering, and calories DO in fact matter. I am so sorry Rexall Pharmacy and shopper's Pharmacy for not being able to request for a refill on my prescription because of the IF protocol that I have been doin for over a year now. 😄

I recently finished The Obesity Code and recommended it to my father-in-law who has Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension. I cannot remember the last time I read a book that made such a powerful impact on me. I’ve lost a substantial amount of weight but more importantly I physically and mentally feel so much better. Father-in-law is reading the book and has incorporated fasting into routine. He has already seen improvement in his weight and is very hopeful to reverse his T2D and HTN.

Also great for releasing stem cells and many other things! I was inspired and bought 2 of Dr. Fung's books. I began 18:6 IF, a low carb diet and 20 minutes of daily exercise in Nov, 2022. 3 Months later, I've dropped 25 pounds, now have a bmi < 25 and an a1c of 5.4. This was a life changer for me. If you are in a similar situation please have a listen. Maybe this could help you as well. Thanks Dr. Fung.

Got my 'immunity reset' fast coming next weekend, 72 hours from sunday evening until wednesday evening. I always look out for the prolonged fasts, they excite me/get me hyped up for some reason! I made a routine for myself, that i do a prolonged fast at least once a month. I switch between the 48 hour and 72 hour fast monthly. Through the weeks that i don't take on prolonged fasts, i usually try to do 20(hour-fast):4(hour-eating window) at least 3 times a week. Fasting truly has changed me in so many aspects... In 2016 i've had a traumatic event which caused for me to get acquired brain injury. 'Uncontrollable' thoughts/emotions usually is the cause of acquired brain injury, and it has impacted me alot in my life over the past few years... Gained alot of weight aswel, and eventually when i placed myself on the scale i was shocked, i was litteraly losing control over my life... Through this mix of intermittent fasting, prolonged fasting, cold showers and exercise(run 3 times a week and muscles training 3 times a week), i truly changed my life around! Now i'm feeling better than ever! Maybe even better than before the traumatic event! I started with the 16:8 fasts through a good friend that i know and done those fasts for a good while. Eventually my curiosity(with channels like Dr Jason Fung, Dr Eric Berg and Thomas Delauer, plus endless hours of reading online...) got me to where i am now, doing these prolonged fasts atleast once a month.

Congrats that is awesome. What do you eat? That's the opposite problem from mine lol. Keto didn't work for me. I did keto for 14 months with less than 15 grams of net carbs a day and I only lost 3 lbs in 14 months. At the same time I was doing resistance training and cardio 3-4 times per week. Almost three years ago I switched to eating once a day (some days I eat twice in four hours, and some days I eat only once in two days) and I couldn't lose anything, in fact I think I gained some weight and inches. So I stopped going to the gym and my resistance training completely and now I am walking 5 miles every day, again no change in weight or inches, so I am not sure what I'm doing wrong? I am probably eating too much when I do eat. At the end of the day it is all about calories. I had my doctor check my blood panel and everything is in range so according to him there is no concerns. In the last few months I started drinking diet soda for the first time in my life maybe that's not helping however even years before that I couldn't lose anything by eating once every 24 hrs. I am not sure what the problem is?! I even quit drinking my favorite drink Coffee about 18 months ago thinking that maybe the reason why I can't progress at all.

I have been fasting 72 hrs/week (pure water fasts) for 8 months now, with amazing success: 22 kg weight loss (0.5 kg per week on avg), belly fat almost gone, fewer migraines, fewer bouts of depression, much more energy, much higher concentration, and an overall increase in quality of life. Hoping it will also revert NAFLD. And surprisingly, fasting turned out to be much easier than I ever expected... and it looks like it can be sustained indefinitely, i.e. high compliance. Finally I do understand _why_ it actually works the way it does, and how important it is to restore insulin resistance. I didn't make dietary changes on non-fasting days, but I may consider cutting down on carbs and esp. fructose too... but this takes more mental efforts than fasting alone. Thank you Dr. Fung for this eye-opening presentation.

By coincidence, I got interested in, and practicing, low carb, no processed food, no sugar, and IF about a year into the plandemic. I got the COVID and immediately went into IF. I’ve done this for over 40 years for colds and flu. Raised on a farm, I knew growing up when any mammal gets sick, the first thing they do is stop eating. It always worked for me. But when I did IF in combination with low carb, high fat, and elimination of processed food and sugar, any symptoms were gone in a couple of days and I felt great. So I experimented with it and have turned it into a lifestyle. At 70, everyday I feel I could go back to throwing hay bales and feed bags any time. Dr Fung is encyclopedic when it comes to good health. I listen to him every chance I get and have read and reread his books. God bless him.

Wow! This is your best, and most comprehensive presentation yet! I totally appreciate your focus on informing other physicians in a way that seems to answer all the counter arguments I've ever heard! Maybe better advice from our doctors is around the corner. The simple eating rules and habit establishment is key for me, and I've lost 75 pounds and kept it off for 3 plus years! Thank you!!

Been a bit off the wagon lately so today I started at 72 hour fast. Always tough without going Keto for a week or two first...just jumping in with a hard reset. Watching this instead of thinking about food! (Once I get in the routine, I have zero problem.) Thanks for all the great content and books...it's been a life changer.

A little fasting is a very healthy thing. Phil Mickelson, the great golfer, does a 36 hour fast every week. He finds it keeps his arthritis from bothering him. When your body thinks it's starving it activates all of its healing powers.

This is so incredibly helpful to me. I wondered how I could possibly gain body fat when exercising daily and cutting my calories with mini-meals 6x a day. It was mind-boggling to me to gain! I'm sure my family members and anyone listening to me grieve about the experience of putting so much in to get so little actually thought that I was cheating. It makes me so happy to have figured out the cause of this and motivates me to try it Dr. Fung's way with the fasting and low carb. Thank you for this video!
