Friends, if your soul is rightly ordered, it can handle anything. However, if you gain the world but sacrifice your soul for fame or fortune, you’ve lost everything. Getting this right is the fulcrum upon which the spiritual life turns.

As a longtime protestant fan of Bishop Barron, I have to say - and I don't say this lightly - that this was the best homily/sermon I've heard in a long time. It captures the Gospel perfectly in a way that today's decadent world needs to hear!

From the catalog of the Musee d'Orsay where the painting is on exhibit: "The work is a history painting, regarded as the noblest genre during the 19th century: it therefore had to represent human behaviour and convey a moral message. This was explained by Couture himself, who quoted two lines from the Roman poet Juvenal, (c. 55-c.140 AD) in the catalogue for the 1847 Salon where the painting was exhibited: "More cruel than war, vice fell upon Rome and avenged the conquered world"".

Awe inspiring homily. Our catholic priests have been criticized for short homilies/sermons but it’s not the amount of time spent talking but the quality of the content of these short homilies that count. Your eminence, you speak to our very “soul” in your short homilies that have changed a lot of lives-including mine. May our holy mother continue to lead you in helping poor sinners like myself back to her Son.-amen.

My grandmother married a moderately wealthy man when I was six in 1958. I remember the California wedding. I also remember how grandma's groom seemed to be the most soulless family member I knew in later years. Everything with him was business. My mother was an only child and died in 1973. That meant an inheritance for us kids when grandma died a year later. Seeing what money did to my grandfather, I waived my inheritance. I had been born again 6 years earlier and preferred to be an obedient "rich" young ruler more than my step grandfather.

The bishop says in this homily, if a soul is rightly ordered it can withstand anything....wealth, fame, etc. Your step grandfather's problem didn't lay in his money, it was in his soul. If your soul is rightly ordered, you should be able to withstand the test of wealth, and use it for God's glory.

These videos have led to extraordinary changes in my life. I started attending Mass on 12/24 with friends and have not missed a week since. I have reached out to my church to learn about RCIA and cannot wait to begin. If someone told me a year ago that I would begin attending Catholic Mass with a strong desire to convert I’d have rolled my eyes and laughed. I was raised in an evangelical home but all I saw was hypocrisy and when I left home I left church in my rearview mirror. I have tried other churches since. I was even the music director for a blended service at a Methodist church for three years. When they cancelled the blended service there was nothing there for me to hold onto.

In fact Christ does not support the possibility of an individual obtaining worldly success and not losing his soul. It’s quite clear from the context of the verse he is using that anyone seeking salvation needs to foreswear any kind of material involvement - even that perceived to be needed for provision of essentials. Salvation is a lonely journey undertaken by the few, and this man is not even calling the many

@@JamesRichardWiley Smart argument. I went to Mass and I think I have a feedback. Let's discard friends and family who not even in current days would notify the authorities regarding a beloved one, but remain with those who would do it, as a civil duty. To denounce he was wandering you will need evidence. Suppose your sole word was enough. Then there are 2 scenarios for you: either (a) you are telling the authorities they are liars, because they didn't really kill him in front of so many people, or (b) you accept he was dead and now you saw him alive as promised. In this latter scenario you don't denounce, because quite automatically you convert to his teachings. I think to denounce was not an option. To think it was rumors based on lies, may be an option. But here what astonishes is that it doesn't takes to be as smart as you to requiere evidence, so not to risk the own life for believing in just rumors. And there was people keen to die asserting he was alive. You don't die for fairy tales. So there is something... More.

Seeing that she's fully dressed, one could also interpret this painting as an example of a person that is surrounded by the disordered pleasures which our society offers. She is in the situation, yet does not give into them. A matter of fact, her expression shows a complete disinterest. Her soul (clothing), is still in place regardless of the many temptations... Just another way of interpreting this painting. Thanks for all you do. God bless you Father.

Interesting thoughts. I see her expression as her soul, crying out from a weary place, as if she realizes what you very well stated, "the disordered pleasures which our society offers." It's this weary expression but also an understanding of how lifeless these things are. Very well said, "the disordered pleasures which our society offers." So true.

Two years later, she met some Christians and converted. Then she was disowned by her father and divorced by her husband. She would never see her children again. In fact, her children saw her eaten alive by lions, which led to their conversions as well. They all prayed for their father until he also converted. 😇🙏

This makes more sense to me as an interpretation of the scene because of the woman, alone in her outward gaze, removed from the frolicking and an observer almost, to the debauchery around her. It’s interesting, our perceptions, and that we judge from those perceptions... what is going on inside us, colors our perceptions perhaps.

It is ambiguous. Is she the presiding queen of this picture (her draping might suggest so), or is she an innocent being sucked into vice? The upper part of her is disarrayed. Perhaps her soul is starting to unravel, but she’s not lost it yet - if she had, she wouldn’t notice the horror about her. That’s the definition of having a soul, isn’t it? You cannot shut your eyes and ears to the horror of what’s going on around you.

Godless people choose indiscriminately anything to gain, totally disregarding who they are hurting. Sadly, there are many Godless Christians/Catholics who aggressively go after whoever they want. Church organized bus trip is a good example. A single woman went after a men who sits next to his wife. Hours talking to this men and then ended up asking his job and phone number toward end of trip! I was sitting behind that couple. Kindness doesn't mean the person wants to have personal relationship. Why good people become victims of devil's attacks? Because they give impression of being generous to forgive offenders. Be on guard always. Pope John Paul said be careful about people who are loud and aggressive. He was right!

Stunning homily by Bishop Robert Barron. The essence of this sermon is the fundamental truth that Jah Jesus Christus outlined. The greatness of a person is not measured by what they have acquired and amassed. Whether it be honor, fame, educational laurels, wealth, friends, lovers etc. It is determined by what they have dispensed and disposed of in love and service to others i.e. charity, aid, assistance, genuine advice. It explains why many great artists and stars suffer from depression and turn to drugs, pedophilia and suicide.

These Sunday Sermons are wonderful! My parish priest recycles homilies he purchased about 30 years ago, shortly after he was ordained. He has been with us for over four years, so we're getting our own reruns these days. I'm fine that he uses someone else's writings. Writing isn't one of his gifts. I do wish he would get something more current. Thank you, Bishop Barron, for recording and publishing these teachings. Bishop Barron, this was a very moving sermon/homily. Your passion for God and is love is always evident when speaking about the Trinity. Your words never fail to inspire me to keep going, to keep moving, to keep hanging on. God bless you, Shalom. ✝️🇨🇦

A good movie about redemption is The Verdict. When Paul Newman does not take the money to throw the trial. He had nothing, but he regained his soul.
