Friends, we come now to the holy season of Lent. The Gospel for this First Sunday of Lent is Mark’s laconic version of the temptation of Jesus in the desert. Mark does not give us the details we find in Matthew and Luke, but we do hear this mysterious observation: “He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.” We are given here a kind of icon of the union of the spiritual and the material, the soul and the body, in the human being-both the glory and the agony of human life. And a really good way to pray through Lent is reflecting on our own struggles in light of that icon.
Mass Readings:
Reading 1 - Gn 9:8-15
Psalm - Ps 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9.
Reading 2 - 1 Pt 3:18-22
Gospel - Mk 1:12-15

I am a convert to the Catholic faith from Protestantism. I’m glad I’m blessed to be doing my first lent in the Catholic Church. I shall have God bring order in my creaturely will by fasting (contemplation and reading my Catholic Bible). God bless everyone and welcome home to all incoming Catholics!

Dear Bishop Barron Thank you a lot for your videos. I was absent for 2 years from the catholic church. Listen to the narrative and was misguided. Now I came back to my faith, stronger! Yesterday I went to my frist real confession and I was overwhelmed with the love and patience of God. The priest was very respectful and just listened without judging. I had a lot of fear to go to confession but I would recommend it to annyone. Thank you a lot to our Bishops and Priests. I really respect you! I understood, that I had to do something on my part to honour the house of God, our church. Thank you God. God bless.

A priest should NEVER judge your sins. I’m glad your confessor did not judge yours. Any priest who does or would faces serious consequences and commits a sin far greater than the sins of the person confessing. So glad for your confession experience!

This Lent I have to live it lying in bed after several surgeries due to an accident that caused multiple fractures. I have never been more aware of my body than now, I have never communicated with my body as I do now, I have never valued the wonderful body we have as I do now. And it is the pain of the body that leads me to have this new awareness of my body and that leads me to seek reconciliation between body and soul. This homily is a balm for me in my situation and a clear guide to living Lent.

I have been an avid follower of Bishop Barron's work over the past number years, including the Sunday Sermons series. He and the team at Word on Fire have been a tremendous help for me throughout my spiritual journey in search of the truth. I can say - with total equivocation - this is without doubt one of his best homilies he has delivered. A profoundly beautiful message to reflect on during this time of spiritual reunification. God bless, Bishop Barron, and God bless you, all. x

I love how Bishop Barron echoed St. John Chrysostom’s words from yesterday’s Liturgy of the Hours (which are pure gold!): “Prayer is the light of the spirit, true knowledge of God, mediating between God and man. The spirit, raised up to heaven by prayer, clings to God with the utmost tenderness; like a child crying tearfully for its mother, it craves the milk that God provides.”

Absolutely phenomenal. Just what I needed. I've seen people attempting to be spiritual but neglecting basic physical and psychological needs so that they end up exhausted or often insufferable, and what a terrible and confusing example they set. I'm coming to understand that God does all with sense. I'd say common sense, often. And that all discipline is for harmony, not for the sake of sacrificing. It's all about love, just like a mom disciplines and nourishes her child in the right way at the right time. Wonderful reflection, thank you and God bless you too.

I am a retired veterinarian. I've made a career of seeing all kinds of animals in health and disease. I also attended Catholic schools K-12. Later in my career, I took a course in human gross anatomy. While I already knew the science, seeing the human body at autopsy and in dissection lab, I was spiritually ill-at-ease. I had (irrationally) expected the human body to be somehow "special." Nah. Parts is parts. I talked to a priest about this, and he shared the same wisdom that you provided us. Thank you for the reminder, Bishop Barron!

Bishop Barron, with an eye looking for a glorious picture, worthy of my parent's own Children's Bible Storybook, I see Jesus sitting on a comfortable rock. Animals, large and small, tame and wild, all wanting Jesus's attention and offering unspoken love. The angels were swirling around above. They are guarding Jesus but smiling. They knew that in the midst of all these wild animals, Jesus was safe. The animals prprobably knew, on some level, that Jesus and his dad, created them

I think it was St. Augustine who said : Take care of your body as if you were going to live a thousand years ( or maybe he said forever? Cant remember), and take care of your Soul as if you were going to die tomorrow. I think that's a simple and effective way to think of living a Christian life.✝️

I love that you mention the body , we have a body and it’s a miracle machine and it was perfectly perfected in His plan . The body and soul are sometimes a bittersweet melody . Is that a sin ? I think the most broken people on earth are people who have schizophrenia, DID, (dissociative identity disorder), borderline personality, and PTSD. The reason I say that is because of that difficulty in the integrated nature of soul and body. Out of our brain comes intellect, decision-making skills, the conscience, and our ability to connect with our bodies and souls. Therefore, it's crucial to develop over the entirety of a lifetime a genuine relationship with God (as we are able to relate to Him; [as developed by AA and Alanon] and each person is different so there's at least nearly 8 billion people who are learning self-mastery). For these thoughts that grew from your homily, Bishop Barron, I say thank you. I appreciate your sermons. God bless you.

I'm glad you come up with the verb 《knitting》. I think women have a closer relation to the importance of the body, and in my early years i saw a lot of nitting. Marc, according to Maria Valtorta, was still a child when he wrote the Gospel. Had he been a girl, he might have mentionned having given a pull for Jesus, if you wonder what this has to do with Lent, just listen to this nitting and understandable scolar. You'll have a knew beautiful pull in the armor of your mind.

CCC 2515 Etymologically, "concupiscence" can refer to any intense form of human desire. Christian theology has given it a particular meaning: the movement of the sensitive appetite contrary to the operation of the human reason. The apostle St. Paul identifies it with the rebellion of the "flesh" against the "spirit."302 Concupiscence stems from the disobedience of the first sin. It unsettles man's moral faculties and, without being in itself an offense, inclines man to commit sins.303
@jeromefc
@jeromefc 7 ай бұрын
CCC 2516 Because man is a composite being, spirit and body, there already exists a certain tension in him; a certain struggle of tendencies between "spirit" and "flesh" develops. But in fact this struggle belongs to the heritage of sin. It is a consequence of sin and at the same time a confirmation of it. It is part of the daily experience of the spiritual battle: For the Apostle it is not a matter of despising and condemning the body which with the spiritual soul constitutes man's nature and personal subjectivity. Rather, he is concerned with the morally good or bad works, or better, the permanent dispositions - virtues and vices - which are the fruit of submission (in the first case) or of resistance (in the second case) to the saving action of the Holy Spirit. For this reason the Apostle writes: "If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit."304

Okay, I have to take a second here for some technical criticism, so if that's your thing then read on: It is very bothersome to me that the audio is so overly compressed. Bishop Barron's voice sounds like he's speaking right up against the microphone, and every little minuscule sound in between words is audible at the same volume (typical of over-compression). I've noticed this since the whole switch to the new studio, and I wish something would be done. It is just very off-putting as I have been listening for years and have always enjoyed every aspect of the production quality of anything from Word on Fire. If you think I'm wrong, just compare the audio of this sermon to the one from the first Sunday of Lent 2022 (5 March 22) - you'll find a much better balance of volume and compression on the latter. Much easier to listen to, and I don't feel the need to pull the volume down to 20% so my ears don't feel like they're going to explode. Please, can we get a different approach to capturing and processing the audio for these sermons?

This is an incredible word. How do we see asceticism foster this integration. I feel that some of the Saints didn't understand this, maybe I'm wrong but a lot were very harsh on the body which I think cruel. This is my big question right now, as I'm dealing with this in my own life due to sickness and isolation, would be interested in any opinions.

Thanks for this homily and for all the homilies. They are always very helpful. It left me thinking - what are the ways of integrating both body and spirit? What have the saints advised? St. Josemaria would talk of mortification in little things, but constant, like the beating of the heart, but also the freedom of not being stuck to a particular mortification. Could this be one path?
