Turning off the machine is easy. Opening up a book is easy. The hard part is resisting the urge to go back to the dopamine. Try a reward system: after x pages, I can play my game again. Slowly increase x over time, but honestly, I think you'll find yourself exceeding that number voluntarily. Also: yes, reading comics/manga/graphic novels IS reading.

I actually got into reading with web comics. By age 18 I read a grand total on 1 book on my own, outside of school. When I went to college I saw a video about solo leveling and spent the whole night binging the whole thing (40 chapters back then I think). From there I’ve regularly read web comics and even started audiobooks and a few web novels.

Without a hint of being ironic here, comic books gradually got me into reading novels (and I still read graphic novels too). Not to diminish comics, but they take less brain power since you are reading dialogue and looking at pictures (which makes a good replacement for doom scrolling tbh). Comics are great, but something about an immersive book hits me more. But it was because of Marvel Rivals getting me interested in comics again, that broke me out of a reading slump and started reading for enjoyment again. Great video btw!

Good video! I remember the teacher that got me into reading with the pendragon series my mom was so happy because she was also a teacher. Fast forward 20 years and my old teacher became the new principal at the school and literally became professor umbridge ruling over the school with an iron fist and curt smile my mom got a promotion soon after just to finally move on

One of the best things ive started doing. The stormlight archive is such a good one. Mistborn too. Other books by other authors like Sword of kaigen or the will of the many are also good.

i dont want to play video games and watch tv bc it makes me feel like im not bettering myself. I dont know if reading books about dragons would be enough for me to consider it a “healthy” or “productive” hobby just bc im reading.
@technoboop1890Күн бұрын
Sounds like an unhealthy way to live imo. Just do what you enjoy. Life is too short to worry about whether particular hobbies count as "bettering yourself"

I understand how you feel. Audiobooks have been a game changer for me. Pick one that sounds interesting to you in any way possible and go wash your dishes, fold your laundry, rake some leaves outside, go for a walk, etc. As long as it's something monotonous that lets your mind idle! Before you know it, your tasks are done and you got to listen to a good story. It's a win- win even if you do it for 10 minutes. Start small and don't forget to reward yourself with a video game session or tv show. (Just remember to moderate your reward!)

I started reading a few months because I was going through some stuff, and video games were just a distraction for me. Reading helped provide perspective that I used to tackle my own issues. Reading teaches me lessons by telling me a story in a way other media struggle to do well. I read not for the betterment of myself but because I appreciate the storytelling and perspective, which causes me to think and reflect upon myself.
