Hey sportsfans, well this is the three year report: bearing still is "noisy" but no where near as bad as before I lubed it three years ago. So far so good.

This is a great video. My 2014 developed the dreaded bearing howl. Unfortunately greasing did not help as it was too far gone before I got to it. You do have to lower the shaft as shown, I tried to insert the needle but was unable to do so due to the angle. Pushing the plastic back with a screwdriver allowed me to remove the bolt. Thanks for posting and sharing, great to help others.

Thanks Dwight, I'm going to try this. I had a clunking noise a few years ago and changed it myself, found a jobber at 600.00 here in Montreal. Making some noise now. My other solution is to take it off and put it back on in late fall. Didn't know you can run it without it. I only really use it in deep snow a couple of times of year.

It is now May and I cannot discern any change to the bearing since it lubricated it. I still plan on having a more detailed look at it this summer and will post then.

You can replace just the bearing of the drive shaft - Yes, Honda says to replace the whole thing for some reason, but there are expert shops who replace just the bearing. I had this done for my moms crv at a place called Cardanic in Toronto. Only cost $300. If a shop convinces you you need a new one, call another. Called a handful of places before finding Cardanic. Don’t stress, light issue. It was a 2014 CRV.

Go to drive shaft shop. Have them cut out the hanger bearing and replace the ends of the driveshafts with a proper slip joint and new hanger bearing. Cost should be less a grand and no more hijacking by the dealer on a complete driveshaft assembly

Can you say if the bearing made noise only when heated up for driving after some minutes well or did the bearing start making noise from cold start and drive? Reason I'm asking is because I'm having a similar issue but only when the vehicle gets hot from about 30 minutes of constant drive time.

Different model but similar problem. The rubber has perished but the bearing is ok. If the cv joint could be dismantled/removed the bearing could be replaced. Any suggestions on how?

My 2013 shudders upon acceleration from a stop up to 20mph. I thought it was a rear wheel bearing. I have a very noticeable bearing grinding sound at all speeds. A drive shaft for that vehicle costs around $150 from Ebay, so I will switch it out soon. So, along with the hanger bearing support, I will get all new U-Joints
@m1kcan12 жыл бұрын
This is brilliant. However my bearing is probably shot as I’ve been driving with this noise for a while. I’ll use this as preventative maintenance on my new driveshaft every 75,000 kms as my original driveshaft bearing on my 2012 CRV went out just after 100,000 kms, likely due to not much use of the car during the pandemic as it was a second car.

Did you have to cut out the center of the grey rubber dust boot to get at the bearing? Hope its still working for you. Thanks for posting
@dwightdavies78603 жыл бұрын
No. The only cutting was the slots in the underbody to give access to the bolts for the support. BTW I still have no change to the much reduced noise, so I suspect/hope that the lubrication has prevented further deterioration.

I have an Audi quattro, the sound I have is a hum which increases with speed and is more pronounced under acceleration. I believe this is the centre bearing running dry now. Do you agree?
@dwightdad2u83111 ай бұрын
Sorry, I am not a mechanic, and am not familiar with the Audi Quattro. I assume that it is AWD. If the noise increases with speed there is a good chance that it is a bearing or gear. Good luck.

You can get cheap replacement drive shafts on the internet. You can get a cheap install at a muffler shop. About $150 was my cost. It's been three years. Allot cheaper than replacing parts.

@dwightdavies78602 жыл бұрын
Any bearing grease will help. If you have a wobbling noise, rather than a whine, then the bearings are far more damaged and should be replaced.

@dwightdad2u8313 жыл бұрын
So far so good. The bearing still makes some sound, so it it not new, but it is at a very low level, and does not sound like a bearing in failure to me. I will have a much closer look/inspect/run it on blocks this summer.

Hi Dwight, can i inject lubricant without lowering down bearing? thanks
@dwightdavies78603 жыл бұрын
I do not believe so. You have to be able to pivot the support on its rubber mount to be able to get the needle into the bearing.
@astazachem23863 жыл бұрын
@@dwightdavies7860 ok. do i really need cut plastic ?
@dwightdavies78603 жыл бұрын
You only need to cut two slots in the plastic to allow it to be pushed back. You need to do this to gain access to the bolt that holds the hanger to the body of the car.
@astazachem23863 жыл бұрын
@@dwightdavies7860 as you i went Honda DS to identify this noise source paid 245cad. i have this noise for 5000 km. i think bearing inner ring worn out the shaft seating area. in near future we need replace whole assembly?
@dwightdavies78603 жыл бұрын
If the bearing is quite damaged then you need to replace it. The only solution from Honda is to replace the entire driveshaft. Apparently there are much cheaper ones avail online. Alternatively, apparently some mechanical shops might be able to replace the bearing. If you undo the centre mount and rotate the mount by hand you can feel for roughness. If the bearing feels rough then it definitely needs replacement, and simply greasing it won’t save it.

I am sorry, but I don't understand. Perhaps you could post a photo and point to the area you are interested in. I did not undo any of the shaft connections; I simply unbolted the centre support from the frame, and then simply pushed it back up into position and rebolted it when I was done. This is at about the middle of the film.

I just used standard bearing grease, avail in tubes all over. your sound is more like a gear sound than a bearing sound to me, and it seems to go away above a certain speed, where bearings that are noisy just get noisier. I am no expert though. Sorry I can't help more.
