How to Lubricate a Hayward Backwash Valve O'Ring

It's important to lubricate the o'rings in your backwash valve. In this video I'll show you how to do just that on a Hayward Piston style backwash valve.

Thank you for the heads-up. I maintain our pool and have neglected our Pentair FNS DE backwash valve for 14 years. Today, I replaced the o-rings and the backwash valve is so much easier to operate now. Also, I discovered that one of the o-rings was missing.

@@PoolSchooler Thank you for your reply. I am checking it out tomorrow morning. I actually didn't know there are o-rings in this thing and need to lube it. I owned my pool for 5 years and never did that once (again, I didn't know)! I pushed the valve down and forced it to lock this afternoon and water still leaks. It was difficult to lock for whatever reason and I hope I didn't break anything.

Great vid! I need to do this to my DE filter. Because of you and your vids I have learned how to manage my own pool and I have never had one until recently moving to Mesa, AZ. I do have a couple of questions; 1. Where do I purchase the O-rings 2. Where can I purchase the entire piston 3. This question is off-topic, what type of pool pole do you use? The pole I use, for brushing weekly, broke from the stress. Thank you.

Hey just letting you know that synthetic lubricant shown in the video still contains petroleum distillates. this means it will eat rubber and plastic eventually.. Look for a product called Super Lube. iI's a little gray tube. it's even food safe so you can use it on any o-rings, faucet valves and such in your house.

Honestly I don’t know, I would suggest calling a pool supply store or a pool repair company and ask them they shouldn’t need to come out just to tell you if you can or cannot. Unfortunately I don’t do repairs on lights there’s something about water and electricity that I tend to stay away from.

Should i use a 100% water based silicone for lubricating oring and gasket?

The lube I use is Boss 820 lube. And it is a silicon dioxide thickened,high molecular weight dimethyl polysiloxane-based material. It is a stiff, tacky dielectric compound with excellent water repellency. You can find it online. What if there is no way to budge it! Supper dry in there what else can I use

Once it gets that tight you might be in trouble. You might want to unscrew the retention nut and spray some heavy duty silicon spray into the cylinder and see if that helps loosen it up often times when it’s that tight if you try to force the piston out one of the pucks will snap off and then you have to get a pro to come in and cut that entire sleeve out and remove it from the bulkhead of the filter and replace it. It’s very costly which is why in my video I say it’s important to maintain lubrication on that valve. Sorry I don’t have better news. But you might want to contact a pool repair pro and see if they can get it out for you and then make sure you keep that thing lubricated

Can I replace the bearings in a Hayward VS3400 pump?

I believe you can, but you'll also have to replace the shaft seal as well. I'd suggest having someone do that for you. If you don't get it right water can leak into your motor and ruin it and that's costly.

Thanks for providing such great detail in your videos. I'm trying to help my elderly parents with their above ground pool and Pool School's videos have been a huge benefit! I've told friends to Like and Subscribe as well. Their pool measures 12'x24' and holds about 9,000. Their original pump & sand filter were ridiculously inadequate. (0.5 HP & 9kg sand vessel) I'd like to upgrade their system but don't want to cause damage by going overboard. Would you please let me know your thoughts regarding installing a 1HP pump with a 19" (100 lb) sand vessel instead. Also, based on your recommendations, I'm interested in installing (The Pool Cleaner/Aquanaut/Phoenix 2-wheel) in their above ground pool. Hi Michael. Thanks for your comment. We've had several above ground pools, all of which I've had to upgrade with a bigger (cartridge) filter (not a fan of sand or DE especially for above ground pools), and more powerful pump motor. The real trick is the plumbing of the pool. Most above ground pools have cheap plastic hoses for suction and return that break easily and don't hold up to weather (especially the sun). If you watch this video you can see some of the plumbing I did on one of our above ground pools. ALSO, for a pool vac I'd HIGHLY recommend the Barracuda Ranger Pool Cleaner (here's a google link: g.co/kgs/hAfiVN ). By far it's, in my opinion the best one for above ground pools. Can you used Ed 40 if you need too?

I would not recommend WD (not Ed) 40 to lube an o'ring. I recommend something more substancial like what I recommend in this video. WD40 just doesn't hold up long enough. Hope you'll subscribe and please check out my website poolschooler.com
