Hi JB. I`m in Ontario Canada and I just subscribed to your channel. I have 2 old but gold Arien snowblowers. My 8hp is 44 yrs old and my 10 hp is over 30 yrs old. I maintain them regularly but it`s nice to see how others do the maintenance on them. I recently retired and will be cleaning and repainting the snowblowers hopefully to their original colours. Would you know where I can find the proper paint and Ariens colours for my classic snowblowers? Thanks so much for posting!

Hi Just subscribed. Great channel. Question for you. I bought a Husqvarna ST124 in 2022. This it's 3rd winter. Have about 15 hours on it. No problems thus far. After watching your channel I wanted to know how and when to lubricate the auger shaft. There are no grease fittings on the shaft. There is a grease fitting on the gear box. My owners manual says not to add any grease to the gear box. The company's AI website says that modern snow throwers have sealed bearings on the shaft and no maintenance is required. I still would like to add some grease to the shaft after watching your video about no grease fittings on shafts. After how many hours should this performed? Or should I listen to the company's advice.

That old Ariens gearbox has a crown and pinion in it like a car differential very strong. I’ve been using 75W90 synthetic gear oil seems to work fine. When I got this 1966 Ariens the augers did not turn. Took it apart. The roll pin was broken. I put a new roll pin in and found it was shim too tight. wasn’t sure how to re-shim the gears so I doubled up the gasket on the plate was still a little snug, but it worked OK after. Roll pin never broke since the augers are nice and free now. It’s actually fairly easy to take apart and replace the three seals in the gear housing. Seals were still available at that point. I don’t know about now. On some of the snow blowers that just take grease in the gear case I add oil with the grease. No drain, plug or fill. I just split the case apart and take it off and clean it. Install grease and oil silicone the two half’s and put back together. I knew you could tip it back on the handle bars and would balance itself. didn’t know you can fill the gear case that way to get the proper level. That’s a good tip. I’ll have to try that next time I do the gear case service.

Don’t do what I did ‼️. I failed to check mine for a few seasons. I checked it this month and it was beyond LOW. So low that I felt that it needed to be flushed, put a new gasket and fill with brand new Ariens L3 gear lubricant. Luckily I didn’t notice excessive wear, but what I drained from it was very cloudy and likely had metal particles in it. The best way I found to drain it was to use a marine oil extractor, flush with kerosene and repeat. Do not skip checking your gear box fluid regularly ‼️

@edwintaber6465 Жыл бұрын
Remember to check the bushings or bearings on the outside ends of the auger shaft. Wear can put pressure on the gearbox seals and can change the interface of the gears. On the "cheaper" machines check for distortions in the housing causing the three bearings to be out of alignment. (probably from poor storage). Also, the aftermarket shoes are nice, I put them on my machine for grass areas, but for heavier snow they will cause the machine to ski upward. The smaller contact surface on the factory shoes keep the machine from riding up. The rotation of the augers will pull the front of the machine up in heavy snow, especially the plow berms at the end of the driveway. Be careful because the handles snapping down can cause injury.

The grease must be compatible with yellow metal containing copper such as bronze and brass. Tractor supply cells the same 00 grease According to the technical specifications. Sure enough the blue cap popped out using a putty knife and a flat head screwdriver. Cub cadet says to fill it up with 00 grease. Problem solved. I have a 2008 troybilt that I had to replace the worm gear. That gear box was packed with grease and I would agree with you about the grease being tossed to the sides. Lots of grease in the case, very little on the gear. Plus it was a mess to clean all the metal shaving out of the gear box. These machines also dont even have a gasket, they are only together with gasket maker. I replaced the grease with 90w and it seems to suffer a little bit of seepage, but does not leave any oil on the ground after sitting for weeks, so I keep an eye on the oil level and add as needed. I would not recommend replacing the assembly for a worn out gear either. The assembly for my machine was $320 but the gear was only $35!

You have to be a little bit careful here in reality, because not all manufactures really set up snowblowers for gear oil. A lot of them are set up for and are better suited for a more permanent grease about 2/3 full in gearbox, often a type of lithium grease. That’s what we used to carry on the truck when I worked for craftsman/Sears. Especially on the craftsman blowers I used to work on a lot. The seals in them simply weren’t designed for an oil and in reality were only a dust seal and they weren’t even very good at that. Maybe when they were brand new, some of them would’ve held oil, but in my world no way. Sure I could’ve put seals in, but even the steel shafts were so rusty and worn it would take way more labor and parts than it’s worth to get liquid sealed. One thing to remember is on a lot of them the big gear on the shaft the times rotate on is made out of brass. It is intended to self-destruct and be replaced. The other gear is hardened steel. The pieces of brass inside the gearbox from this gear, showing up looking like you just found gold will not hurt you as it’s a soft enough substance that it doesn’t hurt steel at all. so when you’re in a hurry, getting your machine running before the blizzard hits, you don’t have to really clean it out that much because as I said, that stuff isn’t really gonna hurt your machine.😅😅😅😅😊

The disadvantage of worm gear vs punion gear is there is the same worm tooth in constant contact driving the auger gear. I never noticed a leaking gearbox, and was blowing hard drifted snow. Clearing snowplow berms puts a lot of pressure on the gearbox especially when you are operating in the zone just before your shear-bolt protection. Most of your "box store" machines are not designed for this use. Break down the berm with a shovel before clearing with the machine or break down and purchase a heavy-duty machine. If clearing berms is a part of your reality then get an auger with serrated teeth. This takes some of the pressure off the gears. If your seals are leaking and you can't replace them right away then you can use a gear oil of higher viscosity TEMPORARILY. Use gear oil designed for snowblowers. The issue may not be lubricity but reactions between materials especially seals.

Hey Blake what you’ll need to find is a grease gun/tube of grease with a NLGI 00 rating. It has an Apple sauce like consistency. They’re out there but you’ll have to hunt for them. Thanks for watching

I took it on only once to be (so called tuned up) on Seneca Street (Schaub Equipment) but who knows all that they did as they can get very busy so (time is money) Here's an idea, if you live in Orchard Park N.Y. what about you picking it up after the Winter season and going over it. Of course I would pay a reasonable amount and you'd have the Summer to compentently go over it and video the repairs for your channel. It's just an idea.

Hey Billy, a lot of snowblowers work like this. Not all but most. Grease doesn’t exactly drain out. I have heard of people pouring gas inside and flush the grease out that way. Moved to Florida last year. I owned an Ariens for 20 years in NH so it was a 2000 model. I changed the gear oil 0 times and the engine oil 2x. I don't deserve nice tools. Must be well made because I never had issues. Just self inflicted. Ran over my dog's cable and broke a shear bolt and broke the teeth on the electric starter but always started on the first pull of the string.
