Have you ever had a blower wrap up an extension cord ( hidden under the snow-left out the last time my wife used the weed walker) around the auger and not break the shear pin. 🤦♂️. Well now you have. Brand new ariens 24” deluxe grabbed a cord and wrapped it around the auger and managed to wedge it between the shaft/auger and the housing pushing the sidewall out. What a mess. Had to cut the cord out and use a rubber hammer to pound it back in. I’m hoping 🙏 there’s no damage to the auger or gear box. Worried about the end of the shaft wear it meets the side.

Short of me draining the gas and changing the oil at the end of snow season, I did nothing to maintain my 17 year old Toro snowblower. It bit the dust this past year when everything started rusting and seizing up. Had I known anything about snowblower maintenance like I do now after watching fine video content by you, that Toro would have lasted 30 years. Thanks JB.

If you don't have zerks you can just take the auger apart from the gear case and drill, tap and install some. I did this on a used Honda HS 1132 I bought recently. The augers were rusted to the driveshaft. It took a combination of penitrating oil, Wrenching & heat to get it apart. Once I cleaned it all up I installed the zerks. Now if it sheers a sheer pin, the shaft will continue to turn smoothly without damaging the gear case.

I'd watched your previous auger lube video, and was eager to do that, but was disappointed to find that mine didn't have zerk fittings. And now -- you show up with this one that covers my situation, exactly! Nice timing! Ironically, I've got the blower ready to go, amid much media hype for a "bomb cyclone" and what happens? Not much. Lots of wind, a 40 degree drop in temperatures, but not much snow. So instead of trying out my modifications, I didn't even have enough snow on the sidewalk or driveway to give it a shot. Guess I should be thankful... Anyway, hope you have a safe and wonderful holiday season. And thanks for your informative videos!

If you're using fluid film for the first time be warned the stuff smells kinda bad. Another handy tip is to place the can in a bucket or large cup with warm water. I've had snow blowers come in that needed transmission work and it was more blankety blank work to get the rusted-on wheels off than repair the gear boxes. Tip the whole thing up on the bucket and the wheels are easier to play with. l prefer PB Blaster to help break the rust first, if they are really trusted tight. Tap the hubs with a hammer to help break the rust and let the PB Blaster work it's way along. Takes a while, but most will free up. Good luck.

Hey I love the videos! Quick question for ya. If for my snow blower I can’t stick the spray nozzle from the fluid film that far into the shear pin holes to get all the way through the auger shaft, is there another way besides taking the whole thing apart? I did the best I could and sprayed on the sides/inside the shear pin hole, but one of my augers seems to rotate a bit slower than the other.
@GarageGear2 жыл бұрын
Hey him! Not to worry fluid film does a good job getting in a creeping it’s way around. Especially if you can give the augers a little spin. If you really need a protectant that can creep in try Krown! Little pricey but gets into every crevice. Creeps for days. As far as the one spinning slower, have you checked the bushing around it? Thanks for being a cool fan!
@him56792 жыл бұрын
Hey JB I really appreciate the quick response! I’ll definitely order some Krown, I’ve never heard of it. My blower is DR PRO 28 by Generac (should have gone Ariens). The left/right augers are one piece only. When the shear pins are removed the right spins more slowly than the left. I did take a closer look and noticed that the washer on the left auger is looser and I can move the auger slightly left/right on the shaft, whereas the right auger is tighter and I can’t move it left/right on the shaft any, the washer is pretty tight next to the auger. I’m It sure which is normal but I think in this video you can move both augers slightly left/right. I’ll have to tinker with it a bit and see why my auger on the right has no play of movement left/right slightly when the shear pins are out. Thanks for the help!

The looser auger side had a bearing that was stuck on the shaft. I finally got that off with a screw driver and rubber mallet. Seems to be that’s how it should be! Waiting for snow now!

Hey Frank! You could do that but you’ll still have spacers in between the augers that could seize as well. These are cheap bad designs IMO! Thanks for watching
@frankenberry96702 жыл бұрын
@@GarageGear Thats a good point but putting the zerks in means the grease is definitely in the auger shaft. Spraying/greasing the spacers would also be a good idea.

Hi I have an ariens 927LE from 2008. I have a feeling my augers are seized to the shaft and I cant get the old pins out. Any suggestions?

Hey jayan! You could try torching them and then immediately after dump ice cold water on them. This has broken a number of seized items for me. Thanks for watching

It’s much more difficult to do this on an older one like my 1989 Snapper. Pretty much every new snowblower has the auger in four piece assemblies, but a lot of these older ones have augers that use 2 piece assemblies that don’t move around very easily. So there is only so much you can lubricate on these sections.

If snowblower has no zerks is it worth it to drill and tap and add some or is this way just as good?
@GarageGear Жыл бұрын
Hey Zach! It’s not a bad idea but could be tricky and time consuming on narrower auger shafts!
@csimet2 жыл бұрын
WD-40 usually works, just make sure to apply it a few times each season (once is not enough and will not last). I prefer to use garage door spray lube... the stuff you apply to the rollers and the rails. Seems a bit thicker than WD-40, but still thin enough to get inside the shaft. Go Bills (another cold win!)

Quick tip. If you have a SB with zerk fittings on the auger, the grease breaks down after a while and should be replaced. The easy way to do this is to remove your shear pins and hook up your grease gun with marine grease. Pump until you see the old grease come out and eventually you will see the new stuff. Stop pumping. A little bit will come out of the zerks but it will stop. Now spin your augers to distribute the grease. Put the shear pins back in. Lube will be good for a couple of seasons.

@TheOzthewiz2 жыл бұрын
I agree that "Fluid Film" IS great stuff, but on my Honda HS55 the augers are piece (one shear pin per side), so the creeping effect of the lubricant may not be very effective. Instead, I remove the augers (easy to do..side panels bolt on) and apply LIBERAL AMOUNTS of silver anti-seize compound, which will literally last forever. Btw, regarding the use of Fluid Film on your vehicle under carriage, GREAT as long as you SKIP the "under body flush" at your local car wash..........Fluid Film washes off fairly easily when hit with pressurized water, FYI! I meant to say the augers are ONE piece. Sorry about the typo!
