Brilliant work. Thanks again! I totally understand about switching careers. I've got a PhD in English, another PhD in archaeology, and a CDL with all the fun endorsements (including school bus). Whenever academia treats me like crap, I resign and climb into my rig. When I miss the students or digging up bones, I get back to that. Just call me the schizophrenic trucker professor. 🤪

I was with ten companies and was treated like shit at each one. Was on welfare so my wife and kids could eat every day. I went through those things you described and dam near died fro pneumonia, I came down with pneumonia because I was starving. I went from 191 pounds down to 159 pounds in two months because I had no money to get food. Being treated like I was less than an animal is why I gave up trucking.!

Agreed 100%. I’m only 24 and been doing this for 3 years. As soon as I came in, I had the support of a career truck driver who taught me everything I know. He also taught me that at the end of the day, it’s about me as a driver. The first company I went otr with showed exactly what he was talking about. My boss loved my attitude and tried so hard to keep me from leaving after going through multiple screwings. I hauled non stop for this company but they kept screwing me and my pay so I left. At a local gig now and love it. If it wasn’t for him, I would of kept taking the beatings because I wouldn’t of known what else to do.

Unfortunately I know of a few dispatchers that were abusive to their drivers, and most if the time I stood up for myself, and they didn't like it! They made you drive in bad weather, drive over hours, give you NINE stop runs 'til you get home at 5 in the morning, and they didn't give a shit!

I got into trucking just short of a year ago and I was an EMT working in medical transport for 10 years before this. I loved being an EMT but there was no money in it. As a truck driver, no wife or kids and I can stay out as long as I want, I feel like I have gotten a big upgrade as far as pay. I wish I could have gotten into the trucking industry sooner.

I started at one of the mega carriers and I worked for them for 8 months. I just recently left them to go to a smaller company. The first company had 20,000 trucks and the "smaller" company that I work for now has 5,000 trucks. But, the difference between the two of them is huge. I get paid more than I did at the mega carrier plus I feel less like a truck number and more like a person to these people. I had a problem with the truck they gave me when I got my assignment. It was on hold for maintenance and that was not known when it was assigned to me. They fixed the problem and got me into another truck the same afternoon. The mega carrier would have had me waiting for three or four days to find another truck.

Family Owner are the best. I get a high hourly rate for only barely a year of experience. They're super nice and generous with money, gifts, bonuses etc. and having your back. They're companies you can rely on and actually enjoy working for. I'm blessed to have found the company I work for. They took me when I was only 3 months OTR. Started me out at $24/hour and it's increased by a dollar and 50c sense in the last 9 months. The mega carrier I worked for at first was alright. 47 cents a mile. But they had a lot of problems and when pay period came around I was always short what I was owed. But truck drivers should be respected.

That is because when you can put anyone in a truck and they can get it out of the parking lot they think anyone can do it, but when you have 40 tons sliding off of a mountain and you bring it home they don't see that, but they do get to see the outcome of the people that don't bring it home, so they know better. I agree. But if you cannot find a job in trucking that gets a decent paycheck for your family and respect for you, try getting trained in a trade. A trade does not need college. I spent a few years in aircraft mechanics training at East Coast Aero Tech (non-military) to get an FAA Airframe and Powerplant License. I liked the trade school. If you did pretty well in grade school (K-12), shop math is not rocket science. But I liked working indoors. So I learned how to be a machinist, programing, setting up and running CNC turning centers and millers. That was my trade for over 45 years making stuff for trucks, cars, planes, aerospace, etc. (I worked for 55 years total from paper routes, lawnmowing, dish washing, etc.). I'm retired now at age 68 with a 401K, two pensions, and an IRA. I'm not rich. But I sent two daughters to college. I own my own home. I Have two cars and other stuff. And have a loving wife for 36 years. I give God the glory for that. In a trade, you will almost always have a job. If I was laid off, I would have another job in a few weeks ( I was laid off 3 times in my lifetime). It also helps to live here in the USA that gets opportunities for those who want to reach one's potential.

No you don't...My average work week was 70 hours and that is no exaggeration. You try staring at something for 70 hours where 30 seconds of inattention will get you killed. You're clueless about the job. There is so much wrong with trucking only convicted felons should be doing it.

I work for Schneider and I cam tell you there is no way that they would want you to wait for a trailer to be loaded for 3 days. Now a days its different. They will pull you off of the load and send you somewhere else. Yeah you might have to bobtail a hundred miles or so depending (we get paid for bobtail miles) but they won't keep you there for 3 days. In fact why they didn't at least leave and come back is beyond me. That's crazy.
@ArmishFarmer4 жыл бұрын
You're right about Schneider 100% I drove for them in 97 back when they had 1.5 million mile cabovers with 55mph speed restriction. I was lucky to get out in six months because I didn't have contract with them. And still they marked me as (quit under a load) when we dropped off the truck in there LA terminal when they brought us home with my team partner, after a month and a half being on the road. Don't wanna remember all the BS I was put through with those guys. But again you start from the bottom and work your way up. THAT WAS THE VERY BOTTOM now that I look back. All you Schneider drivers, as an owner operator I feel for you. Be safe out there, take care of yourself and stay motivated. Remember, nothing will change until you change. ✌️😎

Thanks for telling your stories. It makes a big difference to me to know the realities behind these silver lining trucking companies trying to sell us while we all know they don’t care about the drivers. Their main objective is to make their bank accounts fatter and fatter and the drivers keep driving and before you know it 40 years has gone by and they have nothing saved. No home, no car, no wife and not even a dog to keep them company. So be careful drivers. If you’re going to driver for a company make sure the pay is good to cover mortgage payment, car payment, all kinds of insurance, health, fitness and good food on the table while in the truck or off the truck. Otherwise let them drive their own trucks. We don’t need their jobs. We can go farming and live on what we grow. That’s what America was made for and that’s what it must go back to. Let the technology and industrial machine eat themselves out and sot into a stale and broken machines. We are not going to make them wealthy while they’re making us sick to stomach, homeless, hungry and poor.

these points are exactly why I left trucking after only six months.... better trucking companies don't exist.... they all abuse drivers
@andrewdonohue18537 жыл бұрын
Dan G all of the megas abuse drivers. Some small local companies are better. Megas all suck. I drive dump truck for a construction company and they are decent. It's also a woman run company. We have two women drivers.

Mississippi Reject this is why I have up on otr, fast really fast. I am still in a cmv though, dump truck. Make decent money and still have a quality of life. Good local company that does not abuse drivers. Other types of jobs around here are awful. Typical manufacturing job that pays $11 per hour working for shitty xyz temp services. No thanks. I need to make a living. I don't dislike my job or my life

Andrew Donohue I have recently went to work for a small local company running end dumps and make more money than I ever have OTR.

I’ve been driving for a great company for coming up on 4 years. I’ve never had to put up with anything like that. If your company is screwing you over, WHY STAY THERE? There are many other outfits out there that know you are a valuable resource (assuming you aren’t a knucklehead).

I agree been an owner operator for a lot of years most of my over 40 year's. I have ran my but in the ground made good money most of the time. He is right about companies screwing you. I am getting ready to file some lawsuits against a few. I have my own company and have had driver's and contractors cost me a pretty penny. My other half has cost me about $200,000.00 in the last 4 years alone.

Agree completely...been driving for the past 4yrs. The key is not own one, so that u can give them shit..and if they treat u badly, u give it back and walk out..

Question: Why don't truckers unionize?
@SmartTrucking7 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think there are a few reasons. We are now such a diverse and such a widely spread out group geographically that it makes it difficult. A lot of us are older and don't have the new social media tools or skills to help us organize and for a lot of older guys like me the word 'union' is a dirty word after the Teamster experience and Hoffa. It was corrupt. It's just easier to retire or get a different job, I suppose. I had hopes for Operation Black and Blue there, a month or so ago, but I guess the bottom line is we just can't seem to all get together. Dave

I love your videos. I’m getting ready to jump into the industry and I’m learning as much as I can from you. I know someone who owns a small family ran company. He’s going to let me ride along before I go to school to make sure this is what I want to do.

I drove 3 days without eating between Minnassota and Michigan . I was making $250 a week cash under the table training pay for the first 3 weeks. On the 4th week when I went solo they started paying me direct deposit so I had to wait 2 weeks for my first check. I had a negative balance on my checking account and no money for food . I made the same amount of money driving a strait truck with nothing more than a chauffeurs license as I do now driving a tractor trailer with a CDL.

Big carriers cheat their drivers via miles - zip code crap, etc... Trucking is a hard life style..the public has no idea of the stuff drivers go through...I quit Schneider for the same reason - (you could not bobtail to get a meal). Thanks for sharing your thoughts !!
