So I'm curious about this... do you need that SIM on a "phone plan" that you pay for monthly? I have equipment that does automatic uplaods of data, and I don't THINK anyone pays a monthly fee for it.

you just need to send the sms to the sim in the sim800l mudule

Don't use 5V to power Sim800l, It's recommended to use 3.7 to 4.2V, just add any 1V dropout diode between 5V and sim800's VCC.
