In short the low voltage rating capacitors and diodes get shorted inside and reduce the output voltage so replace with high value caps to get the full voltage

Theres a few things you can do. Some wont keep the circuit working, but it kicks ass in the meantime. A higher voltage rated transistor, a transformer with more windings in the secondary, a bigger cap, more voltage. You could just increace the voltage and cap, but its hard on that transistor if its not rated for higher voltage. Definetly increase the cap. I didnt and the one I had in it exploded. It was kinda cool though. Lol

I replaced that red capacitor with 5 3kv 10nf ceramic capacitors and it was weak then i tried putting back the red capacitor and it was still weak the i put it on a 8v battery and it just broke. does the brand matter?

Im sorry, but that was modified considerably more than just three caps and doubled voltage. That circuitry came out of something besides a bug zapper. i see several capacitors, diodes, and transistors. More than required to make a bug zapper.

stupid video u just placed the 2 kv capasitor befour and the 1 kv ceramic capasitor under the circuit just reversed it . and by increasing the power input the length od the plasma will automatically increase simple concept led will glow more brightly if we increase the voltage same concept here also . stop fooling. make the same video by using 4.5 volt battery and add a voltage multiplyer.

How would increasing the voltage on the main cap but cutting it's capacitance by over 50% do this if you didn't change out the transformer to increase the delivery voltage to the cap? Presuming this actually works as shown, this should just increase arc length, but actually reduce energy delivery which would actually make it weaker & constantly discharging if reinstalled since it would jump the gap in the grid the bug is supposed to bridge. Adding higher voltage batteries is going to stress the internal insulation of all the low voltage side components & probably burn them out quickly, since they're specced for 1.5v, not 3.7v. This seems very goofy & like it wouldn't work for several reasons, but I'm not 100% familiar with how these kinds of 'joule thief' transformers work or their oddities.

SORRY, but never get 20000 volt with that circuit. Lucky if the zapper give 2000 volt with 3 vdc input, if doublet the voltage maybe get 4000 volt and lucky if don't blowup the 2500 volt capacitor. For 20000 volt has to be than with volt multiplier, which is totally different circuit and safe. PLEASE DO NOT BUILD THAT CRAP IS VERY DANGEROS. STAY A WAY BE SAFE !!!!!!!!!
