I once knew a boy who made an ocarina out of some very large seed from a native Australian tree. He made a small hole and carefully (and slowly!) picked out all the inner flesh with a spike of some sort. Once it was hollowed out there was only the hard seed shell left. He then made an extra hole, or two, and it worked as a fun ocarina...

@@truskoysusaventuras I think it was a giant seed from the Black Bean tree (Castanospermum australe). The flesh inside the nut is toxic, but it didn't seem to do any harm blowing into the hollowed out shell. Of course, the shell could be lacquered, as well. ;D 🎵

@@sarahhavillamelooliveira5825 That would be another possibility, using a small gourd as ocarina. Lacquering it would give it strength, as well. ;D 🎵🦜️😸

Now all I have to do is just bore a couple of holes in the right places on a chocolate Easter egg! 😋🍓♬ I suppose large ostrich eggs and emu eggs have been hollowed/blown out for use as ocarinas?

That's how you do it. Just keep doing it. You've got to want it. That's what I tell people who tell me they have no "musical talent". Yes you do. You just have to practice, like everyone else. No one picks up an instrument and starts to play. You've got to want it. You have to work for it but once you have, the rewards are immeasurable. Same with making ocarinas or anything else. You're going to fail. You've just got to want it bad enough to not give up. Kudos to you my friend.

Thanks! If it is a choice between air fire clay and oven clay i'd just find someone to make an ocarina for you. I meen sure it is posible but it won't turn out very well no matter how good of an ocarina maker you are. If you had something in mind that you wanted specificly I could make you a custom order ocarina. I only have one other custom order and that is finished and I am just starting a new batch of 4-hole ocarinas. It would be no problem at all to add one more ocarina to the batch.

*+Kevin Sornet* It depends on the type of kiln you are going to use and what it fires at. For example if the kiln fires from cone 5-6 you should get clay that fires at the same cone. Also be sure that if the kiln fires at 5 not to use clay that fires at 05. There is a huge difference between 5 and 05.

It helps alot if you have an ocarina to study from so you can look at the air way. Like I said it takes ALOT of tries before you actualy make a tone and then you have to give it 13 notes which can rin the tone in the process. They are MUCH easier to learn to play than to make. I'd be able to give you more helpfull advice if I could see how you are making your ocarina.

Yes. Twice if you want to glaze it. With the clay I use you fire it untill it is a red color then glaze it and fire it untill it looks like more of a tan color. I am not sure exactly how hot it should be fired at because it depends on what clay you are useing and how large the ocarina is.

It might take you longer than it did for me because before I tried this I nearly mastered every type of ocarina there was and was very fimiliar with how they worked. Also are you useing the right tools for this? As for clay any normal pottery clay should do. I used skulpy while learning so I could start over if I messed up. Sculpey is what I've used to make a few good ocarinas. I mde the mistake of using Crayola air dry clay and it cracked all to bits. Tried firing it but it just fell apart more. you can get 1.5 pounds of sculpey at walmart for about 6$ last time I checked, but original sculpey is horrible to work with because it's so soft.

So originaly i had planed to make this out of sculpey clay, then you mentioned that the scupley clay isnt as good. I have a creek in my back yard and in this creek this is a large amount of a gray clay, i was wondering if this would be a better alternative then the sculpey... what do you think?
@DanielOcarinas
@DanielOcarinas 10 жыл бұрын
I just buy my clay. I have no idea. Sorry about that. It might not be the purest clay though. Clay is not that expensive so you might look into buying some as we can't be sure what temperature is right for the clay you have. Where I get my clay it is about $10.00 for 25lbs of the stuff. If you have not made an ocarina before skullpy is good practice but don't expect any ocarinas you make from it to last forever. Mine lasted about a year or two.

have you ever tried any clays other than red. like porcelain? I'm curious if there is a sound difference, or price for materials
@DanielOcarinas
@DanielOcarinas 9 жыл бұрын
GeektoStudios I have made ocarinas out of Red Clay, Brown Clay, Speckled Clay, Speckled Brown Clay, and Midrange Porcelain. The prices of the clay is a little different but not enough to make any changes in ocarina prices once finished. They also, all sound exactly the same. Out of all the clay types I have used my favorites are Brown Clay and Porcelain. Porcelain does have a different feel to it when making ocarinas and tends to crack more while working on ocarinas in the early stages. The reason it is worth using is for light colors of glaze which sometimes change color on normal clay. The natural white color of porcelain makes the light glaze colors look much better. It is also very smooth compared to other clays. The new video of me playing Kakariko Village uses a special porcelain double ocarina. You can hear for yourself that it sounds like any other ocarina besides it's higher then usual range which porcelain has nothing to do with. The green and yellow glaze is very solid and smooth on it which porcelain in part can be thanked for that.

+Person who likes to Craft things homemade Really, you can probably make an ocarina with any tools. As long as it comes out right. And with materials, you can actually make your own clay! It takes a few days, but it's fairly easy. Google around a bit. There was this article with a dude with a beard, a pretty basic site. He puts soil in a jar, fills it with water, stirs, and lets the sediment sink to the bottom. It's pretty neat.

Having used the stuff myself and making several ocarinas out of sculpy I can without a doubt say that, No. No it is not good for this at all. The paint falls off after a while, it's hard to work with, the clay is so weak that it can be scratched with a fingernail after fired, and it just tastes weird even after you fire it. It is good for practice however if you do not want to get into real clay and kilns right away.

Pedro Galvão There was no smashing done on my ocarinas. I had only finished creating the shape, the mouthpiece and the square hole by the mouth piece.

Pedro Galvão Smashing is for when the key is off, if I can't even get a key, it's pointless.

I think you're joking, but just in case there is no C flat.

Cwrwgl On a tuning scale it goes B to C. Unless C flat is what you call B. To be correct though there is no C flat or B sharp. The most common scale is C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, Bb, B, C. Oh but maybe he had the sharps and flats mixed up as there is a C sharp and B flat.

howmuch do you charge for a Dark Ocarina Of Time
@DanielOcarinas
@DanielOcarinas 10 жыл бұрын
That depends on what type of ocarina it is. If it has Zelda fingering or traditional Fingering. OR if it has thumb holes or not. What type were you thinking of?
@TheQcStriker

one that could be as close as possible to the original

That would be a left handed Nintendo style fingering 9-hole ocarina. It will need thumb holes to play actual zelda songs. Hmmm...Roughly $55.00 I'd say. I can't be sure unless it is finished though.

Well the real Ocarina of time is a left handed ocarina but it would be no trouble making it right handed. The shipping might add a bit depending on where you live.
