How to make a bag from coffee bags - Upcycling plastic coffee bags

Squares woven out of coffee bags can be used to make all kinds of baskets and bags. All you need to connect them is string (such as a gift wrapping string) and a needle or stick to thread the string through the hinges formed at the edges of the squares. Stunning bags and baskets woven out of coffee bags are unique, practical and durable. And of course a great way to recycle used coffee bags!
For the weaving you need:
- empty coffee bags (at least 56)
- paper or cardboard
- a pen
- scissors
- clothespins or other clips
- durable wooden sticks or knitting needles
To join woven pieces, you need:
- string (e.g. gift wrapping string)
- a needle
- scissors
- ribbon for handles (2-2,5m)
- cord for the top edge (~1,2m)
The size of the template is 15,2 cm x 7 cm.
The width of a folded strip is 2,4 cm
You need 168 strips for the project, which is 56 coffee bags, if you are able to cut 3/coffee bag.
The size of the bag is 30x30x15cm.

Thanks! The needle that I use is a mattress needle (Prym). I have just used sandpaper to make the tip less sharp, so it's not going through the plastic material. The string is gift string that I buy from craftshops. And the ribbon and cord are from sewing supply shops. They are all plastic so they are not too hard against the coffee bag material (which is also plastic).

That sounds good! The coffee bags just need to be the same width. In Finland coffee bags are usually between 14,5 and 15,5 cm, so the smallest and biggest don't go together that well. Otherwise colorful designs with different coffee bags mostly turn out unique and beautiful 😍

My Finnish aunt made me a bag like this for 10-15 years ago of the same coffee packages 🥰. I love and used daily during the summertime in my garden. It’s so easy to clean, just hose it down. My bag is one row high instead of the bag in the video that’s 2 rows high. It’s my favorite thing to carry garden supplies and the vegetables I have grown in. Love from 🇸🇪

I started making these 5 years ago and nobody that uses them have not complained 😊 Of course over time things can happen and the bags wear out, but in my experience I have been able to use my bags for years without many signs of use. I'm not sure what type of material there is in coffee bags all over the world, but these vacuumpackaces we have in Finland have been durable.

You should! If you don't have a long needle, you could use a short one and thread through one hinge at a time. Or you could tape the ribbon to one of the sticks that you use while weaving and use that as a needle instead ☺

I absolutely love your bags made from coffee bags! We have the same situation where I live in Alexandria, Virginia in America. Lots of durable, coffee bags, and not much about how to reuse them to avoid throwing them away. I’ve never seen your method before, and I’ll have to try it! I use a method that involves ironing, cut strips of coffee bags into reeds and weaving baskets and bags. I can’t wait to see more of your work! Love it!

We used to make things in a very similar way from the sweet wrappers. They were usually little things, like Easter baskets, to place the dyed eggs in. This is very pleasant to watch, only one has to work in a cafeteria to get hold of that many empty coffee bags. 😊
