Noob question: is it efficient to use wood glue on the sides of MDF? I kind of remember hearing somewhere that it was not a good idea to use wood glue on the grain part of the MDF because it tends to suck the glue up a lot resulting in uneven and weak glue joints. How true is this? I'm planning on building a vanity out of MDF and I'm worried on how strong the joints are going to end up. Immediatly thought on adding wood glue as support to the screws, just like in this video, but there is so much contradicting information going around that is hard to keep track on what works and what doesn't.

@@TMCarpentry I did some woodworking at school in Western Australia in he early 60s. Back then, screws were simple things, particle board hadn't been invented, drills and planes were hand-powered. And we used feet and inches. None of our tools was powered by electricity. I vaguely remember a rule of thumb for drilling holes for screws - (gauge of screw + 3)/64. So for 8g screws, 11/64. Not so useful if your drill bits are metric. Also, it's not correct all the time

In your opinion, or experience, is particle/chip board stronger? and is chip board easier to work with or mdf? I plan to build a PC desk so not sure what to use.
@TMCarpentry

I avoid particle board at all costs. Its awful to work with and also can chip very easily. I prefer solid wood, plywood or MDF.

@@TMCarpentry thanks for replying so quick! To build a desk of width 1.2m what thickness MDF would you recommend? 10 or 12mm is ok? or maybe upto 16mm
@TMCarpentry
@TMCarpentry 2 жыл бұрын
Usually I build any furniture or cabinets using 18mm mdf. It's strong and thick enough to not bow. Even then I would re informed the desk top with some timber battens on the underside. If you planned to do that then you got go for a thinner board. However my opinion is that desktops look much nicer with a thicker top.

It won't tear out on the back when predrilling if you put scrap MDF or Ply behind it. That will stop it blowing out.
