There's many ways to build a hive although personally I don't find with complicated for someone who knows basic carpentry I think alot would enjoy doing it themselves. Although it's definitely not for everyone.

Damn fine job making your hive bodies out of real wood. If you had a real good table saw you could make a sliding gizmo to cut those box joint cuts and a good dado set. But you have the right idea. I like the good old ways myself. Free lumber and boards can be had fairly easily. Glue and biscuits are cheap enough. Good tools are always an investment in a craftsman's shop. Better to buy tools than to pay for someone else's labor at a high price.

When you trapped the wood between the saw blade and the fence at 6:22 in the video, it created a very dangerous situation. The wood can bind and shoot out the back at high speed. The scar on my belly is an indication I learned the hard way. Nice box, be careful. Great use of innovative solutions to achieve results.

Fantastic. I am now convinced. I will start saving up to buy a biscuit cutter, scroll saw, band saw, or planer, chisels glue, screws and ancillary equipment, probably a mortiser selection of clamps and workshop to house it all. Not forgetting to install electricity and a kettle so I can have a brew whilst waiting for the glue to dry. Or should I just buy a hive? Probably not as satisfying but ill go the second route. Great video though.

lol! This is a video mate, you don't have to reproduce it in real life. I just had the urge to make a hive just to study the way it's made. Obviously a Union Worker - taking the longest and most inefficient route to make something that could have been done in 1/3 the time. Side-note biscuits don't make a stronger joint. But they do add material and cost, so another union move. :)

holy crap dude you are totally amazing! wanted to make beekeeping set up but after watching this... I may have to just buy one because I have absolutely no idea what most of the description means. ha 😝 one question though for if I do end up building a much simpler version... why did you do the interlocking sides instead of just nailing the flat edges of wood? hope the question makes sense.. I have no woodworking experience whatsoever

Thanks. It makes a much stronger joint. Since this things stays outside and you also might need to lift it up while being heavy (when the hive is full of honey).
