I was thinking the same thing about the pinking shears. I have also seen tutorials where they are sewing bags AFTER they have been treated with ingredients. This will mess up your sewing machine quickly. Does anyone have any experience in sewing the bag and then treating the bags?

So I found that some of my wraps, after very gentle washing/contact with water...the coating will start to crumble a bit. Any thoughts? Is this a sign that my proportions are off - too much wax? They're very soft & thin, but I've mostly been doing them by feel, vs measurements of the ingredients...
@dianesmigelski58042 жыл бұрын
I’m following to find out the answer to this question as well.
@invisigoth5102 жыл бұрын
@@amandalutes4900 it’s possible you have some proportions off with your ingredients if you’re not measuring them. I measure them, melt them all together, then brush the melted mixture onto the fabric so that the fabric is saturated If I had to guess I’d say either you aren’t using enough jojoba oil or you’re not saturating the fabric with your wax mixture The oil makes the wraps more pliable so they don’t crack & break up easily. So if they are breaking up too soon then it could mean you don’t have enough oil in your mix but you said they were thin as well & that could mean that you didn’t saturate the fabric enough & a thin layer of wax will break sooner. When you go to renew your wraps, go ahead & prepare the wax mixture the way you normally would & just make sure you saturate the fabric. If they still break up after a few uses then you know the proportions are off & you’ll need to measure out the proportions next time you make your mix

For anybody wanting a cheaper alternative I adjusted the recipe a bit for myself to make in bulk and it seems to work perfectly fine: 1 cup beeswax 2.5 Tbs of pine resin 1 spoonful of coconut oil This worked out great for me, and instead of ironing them I just stuck them in the oven at 200 degrees F for a few minutes each on parchment paper and the melted wax that formed on the tray helped to soak through each cloth. My experience: I cut the fabric with the pinking shears, then washed on gentle with used fluff dry. One cotton fabric did fine, the other including a muslin all frayed on the egdes so it's hard to tell I even pinked them. So I ironed and trimmed all of them to move forward. I measured the 1/2 cup of beeswax and 1tblsp of oil in a mason jar. The resin I had to crunch up because it was in larger chunks. Some peices were small like the beeswax pellets and some turned to powder. No matter, I measured out the 3 tblsps and put in the mason jar in a pan of water just like the video. The resin would not melt fully like the wax and combine well. It stayed more on the hard side like carmel. I turned the heat up and stirred hard but it stayed on the bottom. I also tried long slow heat with negative results. So I hoped there was enough mixed with the wax and put it on the frayed fabric. Seems ok. I guess time will tell. Any suggestions are welcome.

Would something like soy wax work too? Or does it have to be beeswax? Can the resin be left out or is it an essential ingredient? Thanks so much!
