Make Your Own Beeswax Wrap

My grandmother taught me to make covers for daily use to keep things covered but not air tight.. we just crochet a lacy edge around the fabric and attach beads on strings of the crocheted lace that anchor the covers so they won’t slip or blow off. They are good to cover dough as it rises and covers pitchers of tea etc. it’s another cover worth having and they last for decades!

@@maryjohnking5869 ...She took muslin and cut it into whatever size she needed...she made a small rolled hem around the edge and then she would crochet a little lacy shell stitch with a dropping chain stitch and she would add a bead and then chain back up to the edges and do that all around the muslin ...when it was on the bowl or pitcher it had a chandelier type effect it was pretty and very functional...I can't remember a picture as a child without those covers on everything...the beads she used were glass. I think you might be able to get a similar effect with store bought lace and thin ribbon to put the beads on...I don't think it will be as pretty but it should work. I hope I explained it well enough for you to get the Idea.

You mentioned using baking sheets that you might NOT want to reuse for baking but, in the 1800s, bakers waxed their metal baking sheets to make the original non-stick surfaces. They'd just rub a chunk of beeswax over it. I read about it in the Joy of Cooking, my mother's favorite cookbook. It's listed under Cookies, in the beginning part where they explain the tools used for cookies. Now that I've written this, I think I may prefer to wax my sheets instead of buying expensive parchment paper!

I’m just finding this video but on this topic- I reseason my formerly nonstick cookie sheets (where that coating has come off) just like you’d season a cast iron skillet. One to two coats and it’s nonstick again (maybe not the prettiest) and they work like new.

I almost ordered some of these fabric beeswax wraps. I make sandwiches for my husband’s lunch and wrap them so he can eat while working without contaminating his food. I despise the waste of using wax paper. I am excited to make my own!

Your family is so beautiful and amazing! When I watch your videos, they bring tears to my eyes. I grew up with the stories of the Farm my grandparents had as a young couple. They lost their Farm to the Dust Bowls. They ended up in Colorado. I used to love listening to everything they told me. So when I watch your videos, it's like reliving all those amazing things I heard about! I remember my grandma telling me when she would milk the cow, she would squirt it right into my dad's mouth as a child. They talked about how delicious it was. I miss them everyday! I just caught one of your videos a couple days a go so I’m brand new to your channel and I was so surprised to see this video with your daughters. The video I saw before this one was by yourself and my thoughts was that you sure knew a lot of info and spoke very well to be so young and that your parents must have been making you do this since you were very young. Weird! I've been making waxed cloths for years to wrap tools in to prevent them from rusting but I never thought of using them in the kitchen 🤦‍♂️ I found that a few passes with a rolling pin once the wax is still slightly warm makes the sheet somewhat more flexible. Don't know why, but there you go then...

No need to use the oven; once you spread the wax, top each piece with baking paper and literally iron on top of the paper. Much easier.

I just made some wax wraps and found that using an iron really helped. It allowed me to remelt areas and move the wax around.

Those sheets are Air Bake cookie sheets! They were invented by relatives of mine. One day, my aunt was baking cookies and her cookies burned. She turned to her husband who was an engineer and said, "Why don't you invent me something that will prevent my cookies from burning"? So, he took her seriously and did! 😉 The pocket of air prevents the burning on the bottom. You can even put it under a pie tin to prevent the bottom from burning.

Your girls are adorable! You remind me of my mom! Neat idea...I’ll try this. I’ve seen this done with an iron and parchment but you’re right, throwing away parchment is expensive.... plus You could use less wax and rewax the wraps as the wear out that would make them less stiff ...I’ve seen people add a few drops of jojoba oil to the wax pellets, melt them in a bow and brush it on like paint too. I think the oil makes them more tacky so they stick to themselves better. Thank you for demonstrating and thanks for being a cool mom. ☺️

Jane A you can also use a tiny bit of coconut oil to make them melt a bit easier, since coconut oil melts at nearly room temperature. You can also make a great dry skin treatment/chapstick by mixing coconut oil and beeswax-this also works great on pet paws that are dry or cracked (it’s great to put on before a winter walk to avoid getting any of the salt melt on the pawpads-it keeps them nice and soft and dry)

I use a solid material so there is no right side/wrong side and cut with pinking shears. Easy one step material. I am in love with mine. I made round and square and rectangle, all in different sizes. 😀😁😁 Works great to cover a tomato by the way 😉😉😉

Kia Ora, I have been making and using bees wax wraps since 2017. I have found that using a silicon spatula to spread the wax works better for me. My husband and son are beekeepers, we only have two hives at the moment, so I buy local organic beeswax, I also make them in bulk with some of my family for big kaumatua (senior folk of my tribe) Christmas parties, 120 to 180, so I have got quite slick at it, giggle. My recipe is approximately 100 grams of beeswax and 2 heaped tablespoons of coconut oil. The way I do it is to bung in the wax as chunky or as small as you like with the oil and melt in a crock pot. I then let it cool it grate it (which will be much easier with the coconut oil) and store for when I need it next, or you could spoon over while melted. I prefer to let it set and grate it. Technique includes how you did it, I use special recycled roasting dishes, spread the grated wax and oil mixture over, melt, pull out and spread wax evenly, then give it two or three minutes and pull back out working fast to tilt your dish and wipe of excess wax and lift out of dish, it drys really quickly, yes children will need a adult to help with this method. Sorry for waffling. Oh and I am a big Susan Weed fan you mentioned her in your drying herbs video. Thanks for sharing so many cool videos.

OOPS, when I pull the dish out the second time I quickly wipe of any excess wax, grab the hot corners and that is when I tilt it to remove any extra before hanging on a mini clothes line I have. It sets up as you know in seconds.

I live seeing every and any method of doing projects and this was a good one. However i did see another that simply used wax paper and an Iron to heat the wax pellets onto the fabric. Less time consuming a bit more efficient and really presses the melting wax into the fabric. Also i am chewing on an idea that used pine resin to fight bacteria that MAY get into the cloth as it ages and thought it was clever as it also provides Tackiness for sticking tk itself as one may want to fold a sandwhich and the wax sticks to itself. What a great idea! I HATE clear plastic wrap. The only thing I like about 'clear' wrap is that it's clear. Wonder how this would work using more sheer fabric. Most of my bowls are either stainless or crockery. Once upon a time before the common use of glass, windows were covered with oiled paper because it allowed light to enter the room.

If you use parchment paper to wax them on you could always fold up the paper afterward and tuck it away for use again when you make more or do another messy craft. Recycle reuse renew.

Brava! That’s exactly what I do, especially for regular ‘same usage’ until such time as it’s really time for a fresh piece. Eg instead of toxic poisoning of our food with Tin Foil (aluminium - which enters the brain =:() ), I use Baking Paper

if you place a tick paper on top of the wax and iron the paper, that will melt the wax into the cloth; easier and less risky than the oven...

I love how beeswax wrap will stay on anything! When using Saran Wrap, it only stuck to glass! I love using my beeswax wraps over and over again on anything (jars, cups, pitchers, containers, plates, bowls etc.!!!)

I have a large square bees wax fabric with a wooden button sewn on one corner with a cotton string tied to the button and leaving a long tail, you can wrap and secure with the string by winding the string around the button
