Finally! I've been slamming refresh on your video listing for 10 days now. It's not like I'm allowed to think for myself and just create a blanket out of a plane.

When I only started to do all this 3d stuff I was like: oh no, what's wrong with this and that, I need to watch a whole tutorial again. But now I try to figure it out by myself. And I'm not watching your video while I'm doing all my stuff. Thank you so much for giving me enough information to start doing something myself. I know that I'm only a begginer but I won't stop. And yeah, when my mom asked me what I was doing (I was making a chair) I told her about you doing all these tutorials without any ad (of course, except Poliigon and other KZbin ads, but they can be skipped). And btw I am from Russia learning English, so you are my "listening tutor" ahhhaaaah.

If the simulation is too slow on your potato computer as it was for me, I used a "simulate on low-poly models" workaround. Here's how it was done: - Remove collision from all objects - Duplicate the objects (Shift+d) you will want to have collision with the blanket - Move (M) the duplicated objects into a new Collection (I called mine LowPoly for obvious reasons). Move also the blanket there. You may hide the original collection for the time being - In the newly created LowPoly collection, the idea is to replace all high poly objects with low poly equivalents to make the simulation bearable. Do the following for each of the high poly objects (normally the cushions): * Apply all existing modifiers * Add a decimate modifier. Use something really low as the ratio (e.g. 0.01): you should see the object get more blocky while still having the same shape. Adjust so that you get a shape that is very similar with the original one, but with a much lower vertex count * Once you're happy, apply the decimate modifier. Now the object should have a much lower vertex count, but still have a shape that will make the simulation relevant - Now you can follow the tutorial as usual (add collision to the low-poly objects, adjust quality, etc) - Once you're happy with the result, move the simulated blanket back to the original collection, or play with the hide/show attributes of the objects and collections, to see how the blanket fares with the actual, original objects. There might be some additional tuning needed, I was lucky, but my expectation was that in the worst case I would get some slight clipping easy to fix with a higher distance or thickness outer. Hope this helps.

If your cloth acts buggy and clips through/ignores a collider, check the "Face Orientation" box under the overlays dropdown. Then choose the objects that have red colors on them (blue is the outside, red is the inside of a face) and go into object mode. Choose all the vertecies by pressing A and then press Ctrl + Shift + N. This will recalculate the normals. If they are still red, you might want to check the "Inside" box under the settings menu that appears at the bottom left.

If you're watching this in 2022 subdivisions in render do matter. I keep the same amount of subdivisions in the first layer for render and viewport. Otherwise your render gets weird clipping because there isn't enough geometry in the object.

I actually just ran into a problem that I managed to troubleshoot by myself! My couch collisions weren't working as expected. When my blanket was simulating around my pillows and cushions, it was wrapping around them just fine until it passed through the arm of my couch. The blanket was not only passing through the arm, it seemed to be accelerating as it went through the arm. I found out my problem was the face normals on my couch were facing the wrong way. I selected the couch arm faces, CTRL + N, Recalculate Outside, restarted the sim, hit play and it worked like a charm! I thought I'd post my findings here after following this lesson in case someone runs into the same problem: Wrong-facing surface normals WILL affect your collisions!

The collision quality works by enameling ray casting formed by the faces of the mesh that go from point A to point B If the ray that is casted clips through an object when the frames did not register, it will be registered. This makes collisions more persist or just better in general

I wonder what would happen, if we gave that blanket some thickness.A plane probably will work fine for most projects, but a sharp eye might detect this and stumble over seeing a infinitely thin blanket. Did anyone try it with a thin, stretched cube? No, I haven't followed along with this series, I just watched this video, because I generally enjoy watching and listening to Andrew's calm and always pleasant explanations.

Was having trouble with the blanket clipping through the base of the couch. I solved it by selecting the object it was clipping through and in the collision settings under Softbody And Cloth, I unchecked the box marked Single Sided. Dont know if there is a better way but normals were facing the correct direction and increasing the quaility steps was not helping any.

So I forgot to UV unwrap cause I thought I was confident enough that I could do a few steps by myself (obviously i shouldn't have been) and it was too far to undo. But I found a really easy solution that didn't involve resetting my progress. The good thing is that since we made sure early on that we had square faces. As long as you haven't attempted to UV unwrap (it should fill the whole UV display box but with rectangular faces instead of square ones) you just need to use the UV squares addon that Andrew always talks about. Just click "square to grid", which makes everything in the correct aspect ratio. Then you just scale it up to the correct size and center it (to keep things a bit neater), and you should have a perfectly fixed UV map. You can check using the UV grid image. if each square takes up one face, you've done it correctly.

Yeh that's the good mindset artist's can make their own models but but they need also to make their projects done in deadlines.

im getting a really weird result with my blanket. In Evee everything seems normal but when i render the image there are those fragments, like glitching happening in the mesh. I have no idea why this is happening. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Note for anyone like me looking for Friction - it's now a factor in the collision settings of the other object, not the cloth.

In case your blanket keeps clipping with a certain object no matter how much you adjusted stuff, if you check "Override Normals" under the Softbody And Cloth tab for the object it keeps clipping through, it should fix the problem. At least for me it did.

Just a note: If you are not seeing the edges when you're applying the subdivision modifier, it's probably because of the SIMPLIFY function in your render settings.

Why not add a bit of thickness to the blanket?

It would take more than twice as long to simulate If you make it thick in the beginning, and if you use a solidify modifier after you will get some weird stuff going on in the wrinkles
