I thought of creating a napkin for a scene and started with a plane subdividing it to 40. Its a simple plane with no materials, textures or modifiers. I applied the cloth modifiers from the physics tab and enabled self collision keeping the rest to default settings. Even without any collision object selected the cloth just crumples up on its own.

What an amazing and helpful video. It's exactly what I was looking for and can't wait to put it into practice. I have a few questions if you don't mind. 1. Do clothes always need to be a 2-D ish/flat type of object or can they be thick, with an added Z layer as well? 2. If a cloth, say a cape worn by a knight, is worn underneath some armor pieces (like the shoulder plates) and... A) It's a standard cape, with the top two corners visible under the armor and fixed by pins or linked together by a chain. B) It's a long, thin cape with its middle part resting on the shoulders and chest (armor placed on top) while the two extremes are left hanging. C) A combination of the two, where the mantle is big enough to be folded on the chest like in B) but hangs in the back like A)... ...Could that be achieved with a single (cloth) object or would it be required to make several and link them together?

Perfect video. Thanks for that. You didn't explain everything in detail and that was great. There are a lot of Blender for beginners videos out there. So no need to cover everything everytime.
@lord_griddle3 жыл бұрын
If you find that it's not interacting properly (like it's inverting and clipping through the object) you can go into the collision physics for the cube - softbody and cloth - deselect Single Sided that should make it work.

This is a really useful video. I am definitely a beginner at Blender and trying to make some simple props for a Unity game. Since I am trying to create a coat stand with some bits hanging on it, this was just what I was looking for. But, I have a question. I created this basic coat stand, a pole about 1.8m high, some legs, and with four big double ended wooden hooks on the top spaced at 90 degrees, like are commonly found. Trying to 'hang' a scarf on it. The scarf is a plane of 2m x 0.2m divided by a combination of loop cut and subdivided into squares, 50 x 5, scaling set to 1.0. Two vertices dead centre are in a pin group, and this is placed just on top of one of the hooks. I created your test model, and that all worked fine, so I then set the coat stand up with physics collision enabled, the 'scarf' with cloth enabled, the pin group referenced in shape. Self collision is on. Press play and off it goes. It works, the ends of the scarf drop, but it never seems to stop, it just keeps on wriggling around! It is as if these is no frictional / viscosity energy loss, not enough damping. A real scarf would probably hang still in about a second or two, if that. I've tried messing with the various damping / friction / viscosity numbers, and tried the various cloth presets, but nothing makes much difference - it just keeps on going. Do you have any suggestion as to how to make it lose energy faster?
