You have awoken something in me Adam. Puppets on the brain. I made my first puppet off your tutorials. Used plastic grocery bags balled together and taped up to get my pattern. He looks quite barbaric compared to my second. Used your free pattern and created Priscilla Primrose. All I want to do anymore is build puppets, then build more! As soon as I have a few I feel are camera quality I have plans for a channel. Thank you for all your guidance, inspiration and knowledge.

I got everything down except for when you cut the fabric for the eyes. It's like you cut right straight in on the fabric by when you placed the fabric on the head.. The fabric fit into the midfle.. How did you get it to fill in where bridge of the nose. Ty so much for this. I'm gonna try it. I have dyslexia and take it slow. Your amazing.

This was super helpful! I'm going to make a puppet soon, using your puppet building 101 tutorials, and I was wondering if you could make blinking eyes on a puppet like that, where the eyes aren't full spheres, and the eyelids are more spherical. A little bit like the purple puppet with the grey eyelids, in this video, but without fully spherical eyes. Also, as I don't have a sewing machine, what stitch would you recommend in place of using a sewing machine (for example, when sewing hands)? Thank you so much for the great tutorials and free patterns!

At 18:49 you bring out the sleepy-looking puppet as an example of an "advanced" blinking eye technique - could you explain a little how the mechanism is rigged up behind that? I'm assuming its the same wire mechanism that you use for the top blink, except flipped upside down. At the same time though I'm not sure how you'd go about triggering them both simultaneously since you're pulling the wire in opposite directions! Love the in-depth video, it's given me some great ideas on how to approach my project. Would never have though to space out a hard shell eyelid with a washer! 😊

Is there a specific way to get the lids to open though? I want to use a bike cable with an external trigger. I assume you have to use 2 cables (1 for each lid, (top/bottom)) and you have attach both to a single handle/trigger? If you could go into depth on that please do!

507 Mechanical Movements is over 100 years old. It’s in the public domain. So you can find it for free online. I found one version where they were using Flash (or something like it) to animate the diagrams. Of course, when I was checking out the site last year, they hadn’t completed a lot of the animations, but the diagrams that weren’t animated were still in there, just as still images.

Any tips on doing this with smaller types of eyes? For example, more vertical oval shaped? I'm working on a puppet and the eyes I'm making are fairly small, and so forcing the wire through them (I created them with a 3D printing pen) seems to keep not working, they're so small they don't seem to sit in the way the ping pong balls do. Great video - love the technique!
