Hi, Thanks for a great video. I am about to try to build a wall that protects the neighbours fence from our new raised flowerbed. Builder has put in three sides and left the job. It's a 50cm tall raised bed, so should I just put my first layer of bricks down two layers below ground level to be sure it will retain the volume of soil?

Do I have to use concrete or can I lay directly on soil? I want to make large deliminated beds but less high than those on the video but wider. I have a large bedding for vegetable but hard to get to the vegs on each side. So wanted to section it in portion by bricks and in between some stones. Thought bricks will be more resistant than wood beams.

If the bricks are laid on a dirt ground then when it rains the ground will soften and move around over time which will cause the brick to crack, bow and eventually fall apart
@benhortonben91052 жыл бұрын
@@aricnewlun535 if you were to build a 2 courses underground and pour concrete in a trench around the bricks would that stop it happening? Like footings? Asking because I'm an enthusiastic novice?
@aricnewlun5352 жыл бұрын
@@benhortonben9105 well if you dig a little ways in the ground you can always trench pour a footing as long as you smoothen it the best you can, it’s recommended to use form boards like 2 by 4s and get some stakes and form up where you want to pour and then once the concrete hardens you can build your brick on that concrete, but when you lay the brick depending on what the project is the idea is to to keep water out the best you can because water will deteriorate the brickwork over time if there’s not proper drainage so make sure you make spots for weep vents in a few of the joints at the bottom of your course so water can flow out

Nice work! How come you concreted the whole bottom area and not do strip foundations? Wouldn’t the planter need soil from the bottom. Looks Smart though!
@diycp19763 жыл бұрын
Very good question the ground is pete and is known for movement so a raft foundation was best for this project. So a little soak away was needed. The soil in the planter is 15 inches deep this will be enough for my plants thank you from diy cp

Maybe it better controls/decreases weed growth in the flowerbed…I dunno.
@Mike_in_Thailand2 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are going to plant....this was about 40cm deep, which is plenty for small flowers that he had in there. Bigger plants with deeper roots, or a shallower planter, I would have just strip foootings.

I understand the reasoning for cementing the bottom in an attempt to thwart diggers and ants but, if you don’t make the walls tall enough, they can jump, climb or crawl over if they want to bad enough. Still, I love your idea and it is just beautiful! P.S. I’m in Texas and fire ants took over my raise bed and killed my broccoli. Hope you have better luck.
@Mawyman2316 Жыл бұрын
Can’t you lay down a thick layer of diatrmacious earth as a base to avoid insects and MAYBE a breathable mesh to stop diggers and still avoid any form of concrete base
@sectorrottationАй бұрын
Do have to concrete the base? I thought dirt is better than concrete as concrete creates heat.

Why You put a concrete at the bottom.... It's not necessary..
@benhortonben91052 жыл бұрын
I was wondering this? Surely if you leave the bottom open it will keep the plants hydrated and soak any excess water away to stop over watering? I'm guessing it's to keep the walls strong giving them a strong base.
@elizabethdillard5071 Жыл бұрын
If it freezes there the wall would shift, I think
@benhortonben9105 Жыл бұрын
@@elizabethdillard5071 I went with timber in the end as the amount of time versus work involved and cost made doing it in bricks not cost effective. Came out pretty good though. Thank you for the advice though.

@mrwhatevah60952 жыл бұрын
can I use a reclaim paving brick
@AmyWinehouse.9142 жыл бұрын
Mr Whatevah -as a rule no when it comes to appearance as you only see the tops of the bricks with paving bricks where as here you see the side of the bricks.You could use them to save money if you're going to render it after and just want to use up any spare bricks you have but that said you'll then have to pay for sand and cement to render where as using new bricks you don't have to.They'll be fine to use as in they won't crack or anything but it's more about appearance they're designed to go on the ground but if you are rendering it after then you might as well use what you have.
