Come let me show you how to make a US Flag out of tow Cedar Picket. I have sold multiple of these for $50 a piece. You can use either reclaimed wood or pickets from the big box store.

This veteran likes all the versions of your flags. Colors, plain, with and without stars...something for everyone and something for woodworkers of all skills to attempt to replicate. Love the kids in the shop helping out as well. Mostly, loved the appropriate soundtrack in the background. New subscriber

Thank you very much for your service and the sub! Yes, my kids live getting in on the building when they can. My oldest daughter has been chomping at the bit to learn the lathe! The face shield finally fits her now. I'm thinking of building a challenge coin display. I have a friend that has been wanting one. Just wrapping my head around how I want the holders to work. 🤔

Man, can't tell you how much your comment echoed my thoughts. I am not a veteran but grew up in the AF then married a Marine. (Let's not even talk about the jokes that are told. LOL) Our son was given an IR for defending the flag when he was in 2nd grade. We fought that tooth and nail. Anyway, have an awesome day!

As a teacher, I am so sorry to hear that! I teach 5th grade and understand how important our country's history is. I do my best to stick with the facts and help the kids understand what our foundation is. We do things like right the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble in their own words as well as write up a 1700's news paper on the constitution. Good for you at fighting back and standing up for your son!

@@renaissancewoodworking Thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping American History alive. So many schools have gotten away from that, which is sad. The reason he was defending it was that a boy kept spitting on it. Our son went and stood between the boy and the flag and told him, many people died for this flag, you don't spit on that. We have never been prouder. The principle at the school informed us that he kept the other boy from having "free speech". We were floored. Told her that maybe the news stations would be interested in her response. My husband is a disabled veteran (non-war) so we tend to be very patriotic.

@@shannabauer You are very welcome! I have to wonder. Is it his free speech to spit on the class floor our on the sidewalk outside the class? Probably not. Therefore, he shouldn't be spitting on the flag either. Interesting he used "Free Speech" when it fit his needs.

Just found your channel. So glad I stumbled upon it. Nice flag. I think it needs stars and color. Even just the suggestion of them. I love it when I see kids in the shop. Especially little girls. I get my love of creating from my mother. Looking forward to seeing more.

@@renaissancewoodworking Wow. Ubuntu. Haven't heard anything about that in a long time. I started learning about coding back in the early 70s with BINARY but I really cut my coding teeth in BASIC. And it didn't seem very long before I was into scripting languages like PEARL, HTML, Javascript, CSS, Confusion,... oh here I am rambling on. It's nice to see someone sharing their interests with their family and taking an interest in their family's projects too.

Great job! A few suggestions....make the cauls, they will turn out a better project. Also, loose the loose hanging jewelry when using power tools. Safety first!!

@renaissancewoodworking 2 ай бұрын
I though it was safety third? ;) Yes, I usually do not wear it. I'm more worried about my long hair and necklace at the lathe. I need to remember to tie my hair back, it didn't use to be this long! I totally need to make those cauls! I have boards I can grab to do it in a pinch. But, no REAL tapered cauls.

@renaissancewoodworking the English flag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿would be easy as it's just a red cross on a white background.. The UK flag or the "Union Jack🇬🇧, or Union flag is a combination of the different flags of the Union and is a lot harder. I have actually made some and sold them for charity for our veterans . Keep up the great work over there 👍 🇺🇸

You need to screw down your insert on that table saw
@renaissancewoodworking
@renaissancewoodworking 28 күн бұрын
It doesn't screw down. It has a latch in the front that holds it in. My craftsman didn't screw in either. It was just friction fit. The latch on this is nice and makes me feel much better.

So you made your stripes 1" wide, well if you used the measurements from the calculator, your flag should be 13"x24.5" according to the calculator. Why is your flag only 23" in length
@renaissancewoodworking
@renaissancewoodworking Ай бұрын
Probably from being a mom. Hahaha! I had to stop and do other things many times making this flag. I do know that I didn't account for the 1/8" kerf from cutting the union from the stripes. I very well may have started with a 24.5" length and not longer to compensate for what I would have to cut off when I evened out the side. So, if you make one, make sure you start out w/ at least 25.5" stripes. ;)

I would like to offer a suggestion before it's too late. Any woodworker should know that while you are in the shop, especially when using saws that you NEVER wear jewelry, scarves, neck ties, or rings. Especially a loose-fitting bracelet like you're wearing.

nice flag! How are you making the stars? When you paint the stripes, are you just masking off?
@renaissancewoodworking
@renaissancewoodworking 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! I will be using my small CNC for the stars. I don't think making it off will help as the wood is pretty rough. I might steal on of my kids pain brushes and try that. LOL

@leftyovers 2 ай бұрын
@renaissancewoodworking 3:42 you said you would have 3 missing pieces? Could you explain? I thought if you cut the top 7 strips for the union, you would still have all the top half of the flag (just in 14 pieces instead of 7)
@renaissancewoodworking
@renaissancewoodworking 2 ай бұрын
You would have all the pieces. But, I need to compensate for the "red and white" stripes. Since I want the union to be all dark, I need to remove the three lighter stripes and replaces them with darker wood. :)

I will be putting stars on it and coloring it this week and upload an update. There are several options. I use a CNC. You can also paint them on with a template or use a router to cut them out. Either by hand or using a router template.
@kmorrocco

@@renaissancewoodworking Unfortunately using a CNC or a router are not options for me. I have a router, but being 75, I'm just not as steady as I once was. Making one slip up in the process of making 50 stars and I have a nice piece of firewood.. I think the template would be a good option for me.. would love to get some info on templates. Great video by the way. I'd like to get one done by July 4. Thinking of coating it and making a Charcutier board. Thanks again.

Hi! Thanks for commenting! I have a small CNC. A Genmitsu 4040Pro. It can be done by hand with a router template and a LOT of patience. ;) You can even use a chisel. But, that would be a lot of dedication for a cedar flag. If I had the time, I'd tempt it on a cutting board.
