Beautiful!!! Bad sadly, very time consuming. Make a machine that can do all the winding, and wrapping. Another that comes across with 4 heat guns. Then moves away. A mechanism that dunks the newly made link into a tub of water, awaiting below, the raises it back up to prepare for the next link. Then, I'll be all over that. And make my own, based on the idea seen. Thanks !!

You are amazing!! Beautiful job!! I noticed that people seem to question the need but they are fools as they haven't noticed you made you frames for you glasses out of the same material... And I bet if they get stuck on a desert island with hundreds of plastic bottles being washed up a day they will thank you when they can build a raft or make nets from seeing this video. Plus why not just make things to be appreciated by the eye. Artistic and practical :) Great job!

I hope when stranded on a desert island with thousands of bottles I had remembered to take the hair dryer and electical generator to power it so as to melt this stuff.

What is the cost of electricity used for the melt step? Seems like a lot of reward for a (small) return. What is tensile strength of finshed chain? What is damage to ozone from fumes of heating step?

Alas, I couldn't seem to pull the strings from the cut bottle. Some places are much thicker than others, and then it breaks in the middle of pulling the string out. I followed everything to a T. I also bought the hardest and sharpest knife blades. The only difference is that I place the bottle vertically on the blade and then pull. Should I put the bottle horizontally like it is shown in the video? Would it make any difference?

Maybe. But what if the application was as a tether for something lightweight on an airplane? Example: To keep the stack of pillows in the closet from spilling out. Your steel chain would be unnecessarily strong, undesirably heavy, and susceptable to corrosion. The recycled plastic link chain would work just fine (although it may not pass the flammability, smoke and toxic fumes requirements. Also, there are people who may be disabled or may not have the mental capacity to do more complex work-they may be able to sit quietly and do the labor intensive work to make these links. Then again, if you study the mechanical devices and the movements required to make these links, you'll notice that they are very similar and highly repetitive. Which means that a human could develop a repetitive-motion injury, like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and therefore the build operation is better suited for a robot, while the human is utilized for a better type of work. So see if you can design a robot (from Lego Mindstorms or Vex or ...?) that can build these links efficiently and fast.
