The money you spend on a suit isn't to make you look great on the first wear, its to make you look great on the 50th, or 100th, or 200th wear. You're paying for longevity.

Of course, but if it's just for a wedding, it's a one-timer. It would be absurd to go overboard with the suit, unless mom and dad sponsor you.

@@Colossus823 Yeah that's what I mean. Buy the nicest looking but cheapest suit you can. It's only for one wear and if you can get more out of it, great, but if you can't, you won't have buyer's remorse.

That's great buddy, but quality suits are about a grand or more a pop and not everyone has the money for that. Closest I can find to not garbage, is Spier and Mackay, even theirs run about 800. So instead of spending a grand, I'll get a 100 dollar shitty suit, 10 times.

For me tailoring has always been the biggest factor in making a suit look expensive. Right out of college I bought a few $200 suits from a company that used to be popular in the mens youtube space and went out of business. I didnt have alot of money, but I had a good relationship with a local tailor. The man was a wizard and was able to make those cheaper suits fit me like a glove. I got a ton of compliments from guys at work wearing suits close to $1000 and they asked where I got my suits. I also got a ton of complements from women at weddings as well. Tailoring can't make up for horrible fabric, but if the fabric is "ok", having it fit you very well can elevate a suit beyond its price tag. Its also a good reminder that so many men wear horribly fitting suits that having one that fits you well can make you stand out and is much more comfortable to wear

Hehe First comment. Yes, it’s entirely possible. I was down-at-heel, with an impending court case and needed a suit. I went to TKMax and purchased suit, shoes, shirt and tie for £115 (I’m in UK). The suit was £50 and I found this skilful Nepalese seamstress who tailored the suit and shirt for £55 (more than the suit). I rocked up at my son’s school concert and bumped into some old friends who said I looked like James Bond. Job done!

I like these kind of videos. Most menswear influencers push their viewers to buy expensive clothes ("if you buy cheap, you look cheap!"), shaming them into purchases they wouldn't do. People aren't as knowledgeable as before, and are easily fooled if you get some basics right.

Gentlemen I am here to tell you that thrift stores are the perfect place to find quality formal/dress wear. At least in the U.S. I have a closet full of name brand in worn or hardly worn dress attire. A good tailor and dry cleaner and you can look like a million bucks for almost nothing.

We call them charity shops in the uk. Here our fashion is very youth orientated, in fact I was on a fb group which is mainly female and they brought up that men's fashion is very young. Charity shops are great, but be careful because they often split jacket and trousers apart on different rails! Also great for cuff links, ties and cheap watches!

My best suits are under ten dollars. A Chinese estate donated suits to our local second hand store and the person is built just like me. They are custom bespoke too with his name stitched inside. I just bought a black herringbone for 13 because they raised their prices but but the fabric is beautiful and immaculate

I don’t know if there is such a thing as an off-the-rack suit that is worth a damn. I recently shopped Joseph Bank and Brooks Brothers and was appalled that suits costing $700+ were made so poorly. No fabric fiber content tags. Arm holes that are so cavernous you can only wear it in a standing position. Massively long sleeves that needed shortening on my 36 sleeve length. Collar rolls on the high back that could serve as jumps for my kids’ matchbox cars. Bonobos had better fit matching options but at the the price point I really think most men should opt for a made-to-measure option. Sure, an inexpensive off-the-rack suit can be had for a man on a modest budget, but he’ll spend double the price of that suit getting the alterations to make it well-fitted. If you have a muscular athletic build like this 210 pound former Marine with a 47 chest and 34 waist, just save your time and go to some made-to-measure options.

Ties are about as good of a value for money you can get. For just 10 quid or so, you can upgrade from: "oh, he just put on the only suit he has" to wearing a complete "suit look" especially if the tie is of a relatively strong colour, you show that you can match colours, that you are used to wearing ties (a lot of men avoid it, just because they aren't comfortable with something touching their neck, which is only a matter of habit), and if you have to come to the same place twice, you just change your tie, and for 10 quid, you look like you are wearing something altogether different than last time

When the sleeves of a jacket need to be shortened to the point where your tailor says a button needs to be removed, does that make it look cheap? If so, can the button be reattached farther up the sleeve? A smaller size does not accomodate my broad shoulders. Also, if the jacket has no vents, is that a shortcoming a tailor can overcome?

I love suits! I want to wear casual suits as my daily outfit.. But I just absolutely hate wearing them. So uncomfortable with no elasticity or breeze (other than maybe the shirt itself) also my body runs hot, so wearing layers just kills me. Even in the winter, a shirt, then jacket may be too cold, but then an overcoat melts me. I can't win. I've tried to combat this by wearing more casual overcoats as the jacket itself for a regular outfit like jeans and t-shirt. Don't suppose you have any tips for that sort of drip?

I live in a warm climate, and I mostly rely on sports coats. I have five of them, with varying levels of formality, and varying levels of how warm/cool they are. If you want a sports coat that is breathable, look for one that is *unlined.* (They are also sometimes called "unstructured.") It's the satin lining in most jackets that doesn't breathe. I own two linen/wool blend sports coats that don't have lining, and they are much more comfortable in most temperatures. Unlined/unstructured jackets usually cost *more,* because they require a higher level of skill to make. However, they don't necessarily cost more if you buy them second-hand. For colder weather, I own a heavy tweed sports coat. It's great for outdoors (even in a light rain), but I remove it when I get indoors ... just like I would remove any other jacket. It's too warm for room temperature.

If you have a lot of time (and very little money), then shopping for a second-hand suit makes a lot of sense. Items like suits (and sports coats) are often resold when they've barely been worn. It's possible to find all-natural fibers and still pay less than $100.
