I LOVE the purple flowers and the soft grass-like leaves of chives so much that I took the divides from my herb garden and plopped them here and there into my perennial beds specifically for spring color! If you are worried about how quickly they divide and expand as a clump use them as "borrowed" interest by making them a portable color/texture plant: Plant a clump in a small to medium size( 6-8") glazed or terracotta pot. Then borrow their soft texture or flower showy-ness where ever you need a pot of something to fill in a gap in your flowerbed until you find the right replacement plant for that spot. When you find that plant or the new baby plant has grown up enough to fill in the gap, then pick up your pot o' chives and move it on to the next spot! I do the same thing with red geraniums. There is nothing that screams "Classic Cottage" than a terracotta pot of any size, of red geraniums! "borrow" their color and texture like artwork on loan, just to shake things up a little! I winter-over a few in pots in the garage like dahlia tubers. They go dormant in the darkness and sheltered cold of my garage. ( we're zone 5) but will die if left in the ground. But like the chives, will come out as early as the daytime temps are above freezing even if the nights are still in the 30s. 👍😉

Flowers in May. We love them dried and chopped to put in our eggs and latkes. I use the garlic chives as a hedge behind my Saskatoon berries because they are prolific, the nighttime pollinators love them and they bloom white... but I do try to catch them before they go to seed. Although when people say invasive I just hear free plants 😂
