Great video. Another variation on using parallel compression on a mix is to: 1) create a buss with a compressor set to a pretty severe setting; 2) create post fader sends to the compressor buss for all of your busses/subgroups WITH THE EXCEPTION of drums and bass; 3) mix the compression buss in to taste. Note: You can also EQ/clip/saturate the compression buss to alter the signal's character.
@sageaudio3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tracy! I'll have to try that out - I like that it's post fader so the level of the track corresponds to it's send. SageAudio.com
@alexanderbach57983 жыл бұрын
Andrew Scheps uses this technique very often when mixing. I guess he calls it "The Rear Buss" technique. Basically he sends everything except bass and drums, like you mentioned to this bus. Then compres this buss and mix it in like parallel compression. (Typical with some sort of 1176 type compressor) By doing this you will achive a very compressed but exciting mix, with a lot of movement and interaction between the instruments and the vocal.

Thanks for watching Ash! Use regular EQ for a change that you want to happen to the entire song, but use dynamic eq when you only want that change to occur when the signal is loud enough. Its hard to hear the differences when you do breaks between the comparings, for the next videos I would suggest to let it play a bit and then turn bypass on and off to make it more clear for the viewers that dont have developed this kind of hearing yet. Also you tweak it a bit like the exciter that you turn it on and off again so hear what changed, because you did so suttle changes that its hard to hear, another comparison would be great afterwards.

Thanks for watching Lucas! If you put it before you can emphasize certain frequencies, causing the compressor to work harder on those frequencies. This is called an emphasis technique. If you put it after, you can control the response of the compressed signal. Also, you can do before an after to both emphasize and control the response. Not many cons, just a lot of options! Quick question: in regards to rending instrumentals for an artist to record over, should one render the mix and then master the full song once vocals are laid down? Or do you master the mixed instrumental for the recording engineer (double master)?
@SliimDaKiidBeats3 жыл бұрын
never master the instrumental. part of the mastering process is finishing the project with all frequencies being heard. if you're talking about like hip hop instrumentals (i make trap beats) don't master the beat/instrumental. JUST MASTER WITH THE VOCALS AKA FINAL MIX. And don't ever double master. Double mastering is gonna create a ton of artifacts due to overcompression.

@sageaudio3 жыл бұрын
Hey Merrari! You insert the EQ on the track you ant to change the response of. For example, say you want to eq the vocal, you'd insert the EQ on the vocal. Then determine what you want to separate your signal (in this case the vocal) from - maybe the acoustic guitars or another instrument group. You'd then use the external side chain of the EQ to link that instrument group, and then match the EQ of your vocal with the side-chained instrument group. Once the signals are matched, highlight the created bands and invert them more distinct! SageAudio.com
@sammiller98553 жыл бұрын
An alternative to the inversed EQ technique as shown in the video is to use a dynamic EQ ducking plugin such as Trackspacer, which automatically applies an inverse EQ in response to the sidechaining signal. On the other hand, the inversed EQ technique using a matching EQ is more customizable. Each has its advantages.
