Tried to explain to my girlfriend how I made the vase next to my bed- I couldn’t articulate the process properly so I showed her this video… ended up watching the whole thing a few hours later because I liked the video style lol.

Thank you. New learner here. I enjoyed your video! Two quick questions though: 1) What was the tar paper for? I missed that and 2) could you hand coil a narrow, flared opening at top if you wanted instead of throwing it own the wheel? Thanks!!

Hey, thanks for asking. The way I finished this pot is not always how I finish coil pots. I don't know what compelled me to make it that way. Just the what I was feeling at the time. But yes, you can coil the rim and flare it out. I would make sure you have a banding or potter's wheel to assure symmetry. Also, I rolled the base slab on tar paper so it doesn't stick to the table. I always roll slabs on tar paper.

Great video. I see that you don’t pinch the coils once you put them on. Do you just keep adding thick coils and let it be heavy? Just curious. Thanks for sharing.

You'll notice as I was smoothing with a trimming stick on both sides, the walls would thin out. So I do pinch some. Plus, there is a lot of trimming in the leather hard stage. I do feel like my coil pots are slightly thicker, which is why I hardly ever make them. I only coil and throw when making pots 2 feet and taller.

This is a great video. Can I ask - my pots keep sinking on themselves and collapsing. I don’t have a heat gun, should I leave time between making the bottom and the top?

Yes. Allow the previous layers of the shoulder to become leather hard. Not too hard, but hard enough to hold up. Try not to wet it or apply extra water until you feel confident it will hold up well.

Well, I would say that you "cheated" at the end because the idea was to finish it only with coils, but hey it's beautiful 😊

I am learning how to cool build. And I was wondering if you yes a cheese grater to thin the walls in the end? I find my hand built pots very heavy.
@oysterphish311
@oysterphish311 3 жыл бұрын
You could, or trim them with a loop tool while attached to a wheel.

Great work!! One question....coils looks thick, maybe 1cm....then the walls of the final product are thick too? Or did you trim in the end? Iam still learning how thick the final walls must be, thanks.

They are thick, which gives me ample room to trim a fair amount. These pots get pretty thin and light.

How do you get such a beautifully symmetrical, even shape on the pot! Please could you give me some tips and my pots always turn out more bulbous on one side.
