I have a friend that is quite proficient at embroidery. She prefers the colonial knot better than the French knot. She says it stays better.

thank you I am an older person and just learning how to embroider. I can quilt, cross stitch, mosaics, applique crochet and knit but I just love the vintage embroidery. Your instructions are great for the colonial knot I have trouble with the french knot I have just got a blank brain when it comes to french knots.
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery

Colonial knots are harder than French knots so if you can do the former then just drop out the initial move of scopping under the needle and you have a french knot!

I would like to know the different applications of the french knot vs the colonial knot. Are there situations when one is better than the other? Or are they truly interchangeable? Thank you for such fantastic tutorials 🌺
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 7 жыл бұрын
A colonial knot has an extra twist in it so looks slightly different and comes out slightly bigger than a French knot; I tend to use colonial knots if I want larger knots and French knots for smaller details. Hope this helps, glad you are enjoying the videos!

what I would like to see is the lines to fill the rabbit. I always have to to far, and cause a gap. or to close and it looks bunched up. and you did such lovely shading on him.

+thehomegardener There has been alot of interest in this design so I'm going to make up a kit of him which will explain all about how to do the shading in the rabbit. There is a Hare version done in the same way in our distance learning class 'Love, Sin and Morality' where this technique is covered fully in video format. For more details on this including costs and enrolment, visit the website here: www.sarahhomfray.com/distancelearning.html

+Sarah Homfray Thank you for the response and love your work. I am sure the course would be quite a experience. But I already know how to embroider and have Phillipa Turnbull's CD. The wool is much thicker than floss that I am having a hard time with getting it to lay just so when doing the chain stitch. I did the Talliaferro the Royal Persian Blossom. Just was not happy with my stitch placement in the chain and stem stitch. Thought it would be nice to watch it done as you did the long and short stitch in another video. Guess it just takes practice. Have not been doing it long. I mostly quilt.

You need to mirror what I'm doing Jennifer so put the needle in your left hand and the thread in your right and scoop underneath the thread from right to left then wrap the thread over the needle and back with your right hand. We do have a left handed stitch library coming!
