You just gave me a great idea for a colour wheel. Geometric constructs are my other big love and being new to watercolour, a perfect journey. I'm going to draft a mandala and have the centre a tertiary colour wheel. Maybe I'll wait, as I just ordered your brushes off Craftamo....can't wait to use them and I want that to be my first project with them. Thanks Emma!

For people using Winsor and Newton, they have their suggested primary colors listed on their website, which is awsome when learning to mix. Thank you Emma. Will be making one of these with my Tubes and one for my liquid watercolors.😍

Thanks for this! This is my next task. I have to laugh at your little one in the background......my son used to do that when he was little. EVERY TIME I had to be on the phone, he would break into incessant chatter at the top of his lungs. Enjoy those moments, they grow up so fast. My son is now 24. ❤️

I am doing this as I am hosting a paint night and want the ladies to watch and make a colour wheel before the class. I have never really used a colour wheel as I paint by eye and intuition, which I know sounds weird but its always worked for me. But for the paint night I think this will be helpful for them! Oh and I will learn new things too!! Thanks Emma

If you're doing that - at least go to Aliexpress where they're around 75% cheaper..... they're all coming from the same factories in China! Although I'm trying my best to avoid buying anything from China these days!

Emma this video was so informative! I have watched several videos on making colour wheels and you are the first person to detail how much of each primary colour to add when making the secondary colours! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 my question is: how much of each paint do you use when mixing tertiary colours? And to be clear to make a tertiary we are mixing a primary with a secondary?? Not a primary with the last tertiary we mix? I was a bit confused as it seemed that’s what you did a couple of times?? Or maybe I just saw it wrong..will watch again for sure ☺️
@mirandazurek5300

I had this same question! Each new tertiary color seems “contaminated” by the previous tertiary color.
@lindsayface4750
@lindsayface4750 4 күн бұрын
That was definitely a “mistake” on her part, as she has an expert’s eye for color mixing. But for beginners, you absolutely should not be using the last tertiary color to make the second tertiary. What you want to do is leave two sections of the secondary color. For example, we’ll use green. Create two independent portions of your palette using this green, and with one, add an equal amount of blue. That will be your first tertiary color. Next, mix equal parts yellow with your second portion of green. That will give you your second tertiary color. You’ll want to avoid contaminating the entire secondary color with one primary, then having to overcompensate with the second primary. If you’re using her setup, then when she goes to mix the first primary into her secondary, then she should only mix half of the secondary. The other half would be for the second primary. Use equal parts of the secondary with the primaries. I hope this helps and makes sense. It’s hard to explain in text, but I can try to explain it again if this is too confusing.

Thanks, Emma. Very interesting. I wonder if you could tell me something. Is your palette filled with Windsor and Newton 24 half pans? I want to buy some more paints, and like the idea of the way you have them in a palette where you can mix them as well. Do you think it is worth getting 24 professional colors for $103 rather than the Cotman 45 colors for $50? Still can't make up my mind. Thanks so much, Sally

This is so good! I swear if you'd been my infants and primary school teacher my art and painting skills would have been vastly improved! I hope you eventually go back to teaching children, because your skill set is so rare for today! I actually ended up with an awesome art teacher but not until year 10, so by then it was to late! Edit: Just did a second view...... where did you find the Bee paper? It's like trying to win the lottery to get your hands on it - I'm in Australia as well... so it's even harder!

With all due respect you should name the colors properly. Not reddish-orange, but red-orange. And you always start with the primary color then secondary color. For example blue- purple, not purple - bluish.
