How to Make a Contoured Cushion with Foam Ridge

In this video we will show how to upholster a cushion that is stapled to a backer-board with a foam ridge along the lip of the seat cushion. This foam ridge helps to support the individual, cupping them snugly into the seat by lifting their legs slightly, thus reducing lumbar strain. A fabric pull must be sewn to the inside of the cushion cover between the two foams to pull the fabric cover down between the two sections of foam. This fabric pull is then stapled to the backer-board. Watch this video to see how this is accomplished. We will also show you how to pattern for a contoured cushion from newly cut foam.

Some advanced tips would be to make the box tighter with measurements, you can even sew the bottom corners, this way you don't have all the extra material to deal with. Also, you can take the needle nose pliers and pull the hard foam piping out of the end, then nip off about 5/8 of an inch, this way when you sew over it, it lays flat and you don't have a bump sticking out of the boxing.

Just be careful with the heat gun, as it can damage the vinyl fabric. The steamer usually does not do any damage.

If the cover is made correctly you don’t need any pre staple staples, do it properly from the start !

Ive seen in alot of videos you guys back stitch.. Everything I read says not to backstitch on vinyl...Is it acceptable to back stitch>?

Yes, you can back stitch on vinyl seating fabrics. If you can run over previous stitches by an inch or more then no back stitch is required, but if not you should back stitch or stitches may come loose.

Is the fabric pull process the same even if the foam is already permanently attached to the board?

Yes, it should be. If required, I sometimes pull the glued foam off of the backer board, but that may not be required. Then I re-glue it before attaching the cover.

We want all the plate tops to be very tight when they are placed over the foam, because of that we did not add seam allowance. We only added a 1/2" to the seam at the ridge as seen at 18:30 min.
