Making new seat cushions? Don’t forget to Dacron wrap!

Dacron is a must have for all seat cushions! PLEASE READ! Dacron makes your cushions softer, fills corners and gives the cushion a nice crown instead of looking flat! When using Polly Dacron it is suitable for both indoor and outdoor cushions. Make your cushion cover to fit the foam before you add the Dacron! DO NOT make an extra sewing allowance! The purpose of Dacron it to over stretch and fill the cushion and adding additional sewing allowance will defeat the purpose.
Here is my Amazon affiliate link to recommend Dacron, spray glue and stapler.

Spray glue: amzn.to/3T6M9XV
Stapler: amzn.to/3CEL96q

Interesting idea about the environmental impact of spray glue .... but the whole thing is petrochemical in origin (even the cover, given the static!) so a bit of a moot point! But a very helpful video, very many thanks from a colleague in the UK.

My cheap couch cushions are attached to the couch and have compressed down. There is a zipper to the back. I took thinner foam and wrapped it with quilt batting pieces and managed to wiggle and coax that from the backside opened zipper to reinforce the cushions. Isn't as nice as yours since I couldn't remove them from the couch but I don't sink down in..... But your video will help with other cushions I need to fix. Thank you.

If you want to make the process of stuffing Dacron-covered foam easier than you ever thought possible, go to a home improvement store and buy 3M masking film. This is a very thin plastic that painters use to protect windows and such when spray painting. Wrap the foam/Dacron with the film and secure it with masking tape. The film keeps upholstery material from grabbing the Dacron, so it easily slides into place. Then reach into the cover and pull the film out. If you’ve ever wrestled with this process, you will be amazed how much easier this method is.

Can you use cling film instead ?
@thardyryll
@thardyryll 3 ай бұрын
@@markveganism50033M’s masking film naturally clings due to static electricity but is plenty slippery enough to slide away from upholstery materials. If any other film actually clings (some of it is pretty sticky) then I would use it. A 48-inch roll (180 feet long) of 3M’s is only $17 on Amazon, and has many uses.

Hi Scott, I hope you see this. I get the same response when I go into Joan's on occasion. I am not an expert like you. By the way thanks for this video. I did upholstery in 1974 when employment was, take what you can get. I enjoyed the new profession for about a year. I haven't done a lot since, am having a problem remembering. Your' video did a good job refreshing my memory. I am upholstering a sofa of mine during lock down. I'm glad I found this video on Batting. I was Leary of using spray glue. I like your' procedure better. It took me a whole day to refresh myself with the sewing machine. :O) I was a tool maker by trade. I finished out my carrier doing that. I'm having fun with this project. A seamstress, Tool maker in disguise. :O) Appreciate this video, Thanks Scott.

@@Factorydirectdesignersworkroom Scott every profession has its idiosyncrasies. upholstery is not digging ditches but it is tough on the fingers and wrists until you build them up. Not to mention the staple in the fingers. Like a gun shot wound. I'm happy with the cushions they worked out real good. I'm not redoing the frame work, I'm ditching that. It is a Castro convertible. Too big and weighs a ton. I'm going to make a patio type sofa out of wood. That is good enough for me! I'm looking for more ideas to do more upholstery. I got the sewing machine purring like a Kitten. I might as well use it.

Thank you - terrific instructions. I’m a beginner sewer, and am a little confused about measuring the cushion. I’ve seen a video that recommends sewing a shorter cushion for the foam height (I believe the example was 3.25” high cushion to accommodate 4” high foam). But other sewers make the cushions to the exact measurements of the foam. I do plan on using Dacron - do you have a preferred method of measuring the cushion height? Thanks.

the one you wrapped looks like old school not modern at all. not everyone really likes the puffy look. you say it looks better and I appreciate your opinion but I really disagree. it looks like my grandma's mother's type of couch cushion which was great for her but antiques aren't for everyone. now if anyone thinks I'm being critical I am not. your work is obviously very quality work and well done for someone who likes that style. it is why I am on this channel and learning and doing my research. if I am going to learn I am going to an authority which is why I am here and watched this and his other videos many times. I also want a firm couch not a soft couch that you sink into and can't get out of. dacron seems to help that sinking. I've as we all have, sat in a million couches. I have enjoyed very few because of comfort. this is why I made my own couch with my own dimensions and will most likely not use the dacron. but I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn't do research and really hear what guys like this gentleman/expert had to say. nice thing about diy is I can always add this later if I choose. thank you kindly for the video, I did like and subscribe.

I was always taught that dacron/tetron is not just to give a full look and feel but more importantly that it is a protective layer to stop the back side of some fabrics from being abraded against the foam. For example Draylon and other heavy piled fabrics while very hard wearing on the face side can easily be damaged from the backside due to movement (abrasion) against the foam causing the pile to fall out .

I have a question or 4!! I have a gorgeous living room set that was not intended for the wear and TEAR its been getting! It is really in dire need of help!!! Both my sofa and love seat have one base cushion and there is an oddly placed seam along the middle long side of the base cushion on each. The seams both split! And with all the traffic, they are not looking great. I have to wrap my bottom cushions with temporary throw blankets to hide the carnage!! And on the main sofa, the foam , being so deep, split in half!! It is by far the most comfortable set I've ever had and I don't really want to throw out the foam for fear that it won't be the same. Do you think there's any way I could save the foam?? Could I maybe wrap the existing foam cushion with a thinner foam or maybe just the Dacron, then maybe put a tight fitted liner cover to keep the two separated pieces together and then sew a new upholstery fabric cover...because there's no saving the existing one, it's in tatters. It's a very deep long cushion that has no piping. I know if I send it out to a profession they will insist on redoing the whole cushion but I would really love to try and save it. The love seat foam is still intact and just needs recovering. I'm not a seamstress but willing to learn!! :-) I really want to tackle drapes next!! :-)

You can do it! I have made cushions and drapes with no previous sewing experience. The most helpful resource for me has been a vintage Time Life book called “making home furnishings”. Very detailed instructions for drapery and cushions. My first project was a very large set of pinch pleat draperies. They look amazing! Have gone on to make several more sets of drapes and lots of cushions. Get that book and go for it!

Thank you. I have made boxed cushions with piping at the seams. They did turn out beautifully. However I do prefer the plumper look that you achieve here. On my next endeavor, I will follow your guide. I do not have your staplers and do not operate a business that would justify their cost. Would you agree that I could just as well hand stitch the dacron seams? I expect it would take longer but that is not a problem for me.

You don’t feel the staples after the cushion is made?

No you don’t feel the staples at all and it is just as strong as if you sewed the Dacron! Thank you for your input!

If I am using 2 inch foam and my batting adds another inch to the cushion, do I cut my boxing height at 3” (plus 1 “ for seam allowance) or 4 inches. This is one question that has yet been answered by any of the many videos I have watched. After watching yours, I feel that I should cut the boxing height to the height of the foam, not the foam + batting in order to get that beautiful crowning effect your cushions have. Is that right? I hope to hear from you soon

Hi! Cut your boxing at 3” so it finishes at 2”, the same thickness as the foam. You want the foam and the cushion to finish at the same size in width, length and depth before adding the Dacron. The Dacron fills in all the gaps around corners and gives the cushion a crown and softens as well. Good luck!

@@Factorydirectdesignersworkroom Thanks for your quick response!! I thought as much, but I wanted to make sure. It is a very, very large cushion (for an old church per bench) and now I feel ready to start cutting fabric.

Boy, am I glad I stumbled upon this video. I have a chair that I am planning to replace the seat cushion. I am not experienced with anything like this, and I had no idea to do this.

I was at JoAnns yesterday. The dacron wrap is called "Cushion Wrap" and came in a bag (at least at my local store) I was wondering abt using staples to connect your dacron wrap.... I am a seamstress and would have stitched it with a curved needle. Have you ever had a problem of a staple piercing the upholstery (and person sitting on the cushion?) It looked really fast (liked that!) but just not something I would do. Any advice or further comment on that? Thank you for the video! It was very helpful.

Hi! The type I use is called 1/2” poly bonded Dacron and it is 54” wide and comes on a roll and stapling is a good alternative to sewing. However I think what you are using is light weight so good old fashioned curved needle and thread may hold up better? Good luck!
