Subbed. I used to be an avid player, and i am into woodworking, but I never even considered making my own cues until this video right here. Time to get myself a lathe and dust off my old Muecci Original and start doing drills I think. Gotta beat the rust off.

Never thought to use a sanding block on the lathe, that’s an awesome tip! I’m planning my first cue build right now, I want to make kind of a hybrid of a snooker cue (I’ll use ash) and an American pool cue (same weights and type type) I love both snooker and pool, and I love woodturning so it’ll be a lot of fun. Thanks for your help!

Nice looking cue. I did notice that the dowel is offset within the resin though. It comes from setting up your mould. To get the dowel central to the cue butt use the following guide: 1. Use the corner to corner method on a square end plate to get your dowel centred (leave say 1/4 inch longer in one direction to allow you to cut the form down to square) and then build the long planks around the outside of the end plate. 2. Once you cut down the extra resin you should have the dowel centred within the form. Use the corner to corner method again and you should be able to set the form into the lathe with the dowel perfectly down the centre. 3. From there you can use a set guide to form a perfect cylinder, adjust one end of the guide inwards to make the desired taper. Once you have that setup you will have a perfectly repeatable way to make butt ends of cues.

Interesting way to work bubbles. One thing I found with epoxies and urethanes is if you vacuum them quickly after the mix and before the pour, it pretty much guarantees no bubbles. I did some similar experiments to your chip addition when I was doing pens. Just goofing around and experimenting can get you some pretty cool effects. That red IS spectacular. I have always wanted to do a good butt to couple with my Z2 shaft. Great tips, thanks. I will try some experimentation with pressure vessel like this, if I do. Beautiful finished cue, dude!

Awesome build project… haven’t gotten all the way through yet, but when I heard “winter in Mississippi” I had to comment, you must have been working on this at about 5-8 in the evening cuz we usually start the day in spring, get to summer about lunch and then fall in the afternoon and winter at night, atleast that’s the way it is down on the coast in Pascagoula ha… but awesome job so far, glad this somehow popped up on my “suggested” feed

Wouldn't you want the wood dowel rod in the middle of the cue? So you wouldn't measure the square of the epoxy... you would measure the center of the wood dowel? So it can transfer the shock of hitting the cue ball as straight as possible?
@k9elli4 жыл бұрын
Yeah... now your dowel is off center....
@madisonmeister89274 жыл бұрын
Ideally, yes. But most of the shock is dealt with by the shaft of the cue. And the shaft he’s using is a very nice low-deflection shaft. You wouldn’t notice any difference in play if it was completely in the middle or not.

Hello, I ave a small question : I was explained that total curing of epoxy , to obtain the final hardness, mean "cooking" it , if not, part of the hardening goes with time but it is not as complete as with that added energy (heat) . I dont know if having more harness is good for the cue, or if one can choose to have some more or less strong dampening in the cue, as a parameter. I mean, do you feel a difference in the damping due to the epoxy ? Thank you
@jpaynewoodworking75102 жыл бұрын
Once epoxy is fully cured or hardened its their it does not soften unless a high heat is applied to it. On a solid epoxy cure it would he very hard but all of my cues are cored. And this helps with the feel and feedback.
@IsaacOLEG2 жыл бұрын
@@jpaynewoodworking7510 Hello, thank you to answer me. you probably did not understand what I mean : I was explained that fact by the epoxy makers, for impregnation epoxy for instance, if on want to obtain the maximum hardening of the epoxy it may go into an owen , that allows a full binding of the molecular chains (under the work of thermal energy) I had used on a soundboard that "plastification" process, and , whjile hard, my epowy did not harden enough and was damping high frequencies too much . Regards
