@Seine O'More I look at Gentleman's Gazette as more a measure of quality rather than how much I should be paying for items. I usually look for high end items at significantly discounted prices usually at a discount store when they have sale.

It is rare for people to show how to sew without a sewing machine, but is really appreciated when people sew with a normal needle.

I've been searching the internet for shirts like this, and lo and behold, all I have to do is take the collar off! Ingenious! As a trade in knowledge....that seam ripper should be your friend. You shouldn't have to constantly cut the thread perpendicularly around the collar. You can take the seam ripper and dip the long tip of the ripper between the collar to break the original stitching. Then, dip the beaded end into the collar and pretty much run parallel with the seam. It'll cut the removal process to 30 seconds and there's no mess.

It's interesting watching you with the detachable collar. I'm a Priest, so I wear my collar backwards, which means the studs go on backwards from how you said... short in the front, long in the back. This gives me ideas, though.

I'm applying to seminary this year and had similar ideas haha! Clerics are a long ways away but I thought it'd be convenient to detach a normal collar for wearing under cassocks...After having trouble finding any, I saw this tutorial and the gears started turning. God bless!

Freaking legend man. Thanks for this. Gonna be adding pin collars to so many of my hood shirts. And it'll be so much easier to clean the collars like this without excessively washing the whole shirt in case of tough stains. Or multi color

@mrmensje1

be careful tho, the important thing is that the mao collar should be standing up a bit. It shouldn't fall flat. This is the reason starting with a fold down collar might work better since the neck collar has to stand up.

I would have one question which would be if you would advise to get the collared shirt in the closest fit to the neck (So maybe size down half a size, so the detachable collar is in the size one defaults to) or if you should stick to the regular collar size you always wear?
@Vintagebursche

The shirt collar should be your normal size. The detachable collar might be more comfortable in a slightly larger size.

I just cut off the collar above the seam of the shirt band, then sew the button from the front onto the back of the band, and cut a hole where it once was. Your method is a lot more polished and thought out, which is very German of you, my method is a lot faster to complete, which much more American.

are there no companies making detachable collar shirts at the moment? I remember coming across a few old English leather cases sold as "collar cases" so perhaps in the old days people bring only a few shirts but a ton of collars while traveling.

I'm kinda debating over this topic. I today got my 'granddad' shirt from a UK shop which sells old fashion collarless tunic shirts, but they are so wide! I want to put a sweater over such a shirt but am afraid of the bulging because of how wide it is. Should I just buy slim fit shirts and make them collarless or stick with buying specific old fashion collarless shirts?
@Vintagebursche
@Vintagebursche 4 жыл бұрын
You can easily make a shirt slimmer by taking in some fabric in at the sides and in the back. You can see it for a few seconds in my Haul video. What you can't make slimmer that easy is the sleeves. So if the sleeves are fine, you can stick with the old fashion shirts. I do have both. Wide old fashion shirts as well as modern shirts I altered myself.

This is a really great tutorial but you should not be using a back stitch here. Try a slip stitch instead, you won't have any thread showing nor any gap in your seam! This is also not something I would attempt with a sewing machine as it would leave a very visible line of stitching, but if you're wearing a detachable collar on top I guess none of this really is a problem 🤷‍♀️ Great job overall! :)
