I have a grandad collar shirt with a neckband of 2 cm, is this acceptable…? I know you said 1.5 cm but later in the vid you said that antique shirts neckband tended to be between 1.5-2cm, so I’m assuming at 2 cm they were still able to use starched collars, or no?
@AntiqueMenswear3 жыл бұрын
You'll be able to attach them whether they're 3 or 4cm tall, but if the rise of the shirt neckband is higher than the collar stand (height of the collar) then it will look strange. That's the only issue with it!
@nyatsume10033 жыл бұрын
@@AntiqueMenswear ok, thanks! My collars are definitely higher than 2 cm so in that case I should hopefully be alright. Thanks for the tutorial

I have two detachable collars that I made out of modern Wal-Mart shirts, using Vintagebursche's method. My stitching sucks bad, (I ended up whip stitching the first one because I'm used to whip stitching from making Iroquois style mocassins. The second one was a proper back stitch, thank God...) but I'm happy with both of them. I'll have to try your method with future ones, just for variation.

Excellent video! You did a very good job on that shirt. My dad used to describe a well dressed man as wearing “a collar and tie”. I used to think “you mean a shirt and tie. The collars are part of the shirt” It didn’t occur to me for a while, until I came across collars and studs in a drawer, that he referred to detachable collars. He was an Edwardian baby, so he was brought up seeing that style of clothing.

I'm not understanding the process for when you fold the shirt collar down and you iron it and then begin the sewing process. The collar on both ends curves down where the buttonhole is and on the other side where the button that you will remove. So as you begin to sew when you get to the section where the buttonhole is that part curves down and it's shorter on that end. So you will sow that section down right over the button hole. So it seems something else must be done on both ends of the color as your completing the sewing, what is that please.

I probably thought of this because I do sew clothes and costumes, although shirts are much cheaper to buy. If you are opening up the collar, as you do, it would be much easier to make the button hole and back pocket before you sew it all up. Leaving the vertical side stitching until the end, of course.

I was really expecting that video, really enjoyed it. However, my method is nigher than Niklas' one... My shirts always had a narrow collar band. I also add a pocket in the front, I didn't know it was in a way historic; it is really more confortable, but it also stabilizes the stud. The first collars I sewed had slightly asymmetric button holes and my stud was rolling. Moreover, some of my studs got some rust because of sweat during summer, the pocket keeps them in perfect condition.

have you ever altered a modern cut suit to mimic the eduardian era suits? I ask because i'm actually interested in 1890's to 1910 amercan western wear. same thing you do with period cowboy hat holster and pistol and cowboy boots. thanks

Okay let's say you've obtained one of those grandpa shirts or whatever they're called. If you want to use the collar obviously you'll still need the stud pocket at the rear. But couldn't you just use the button for the front? The one that comes on the shirt. Couldn't that go through the collar hole and keep it in place? Or will this not work?

Do you think one could simply add a button on the back of the neckband, instead of cutting a buttonhole there? This way they'd only have to use the stud on the front.

OH MY GOD! THIS IS WHAT I DO! Well..... I just cut the shirt collar off and don't fix the seem as no one's going to see me without the stiff collar... ...and I kind of just cut the button off and poke holes for the studs with my scissors - aint nobody got time to make buttonholes... ...and I'm still yet to put on tie-loops to all my shirts.... Great, now I feel bad about my shirts. On a side note: I have a stack of period collars, but I don't like wearing the originals all the time. Is there a way to convert normal shirt collars to detachable ones, like winged, imperial, and etc?

@@AntiqueMenswear well, i do like to hear the info you give too :-D it got me thinking of how unexpected side effects can just pop up. i noticed if i'm pulling up or down my trousers in semi public because i'm wearing gym or swim clothes underneath, i actually feel briefly more awkward pulling them up. i think...because if my motion catches someone's eye and they look, all they'll see is someone zipping up and think "what just went on there?" but if they see someone unzipping, then in the next second they'll see that it's just a costume change with nothing scandalous :-D well, that's my theory at least. hope you're doing well, and i hope it's not toooo hot/humid over there in japan! o/
