When i think of a shirt collar i always imagine a 1970's Brooks leather jacket, huge pointed collars with snaps so the wind on the bike won't shake it around. Mr. Terry Mitchell has a couple of nice vids on those, mustard yellow ones if you are interested. I have always liked this kinda 1970's collar styles, very wide, shirt open and the collar above the jacket, but i do also recognize it looks very cheesy nowadays. Maybe pull it off with a denim on denim (I like to wear that even thou it's not adviced) of the same color and a nice contrasting plaid shirt, or stuff like that. I do now own several of this collars, and i thank you for the explanation on them. I had worn cutaway collars with a navy suit and black brogue shoes, pretty nice combo. Paisley tie as well in burgundy / purple, pretty darn good look. I like either the button down or forward point collars a lot since they're kind of in the middle between casual and formal, to me a light blue shirt with button down looks pretty nice as a casual staple, kinda brings together the outfit. Match some nice suede brogues and DAMN! I had also forgotten i have a wing collar shirt, pops gave it to me along a couple of bowties in burgundy. Great look for concerts (I am a cellist and guitarist) I actually also like this type of collar a lot for a leather jacket. Does a great job for protecting against rain, (Provided, the jacket is waxed or oiled so it is protected against moisture) I don't like them that much for cold wind since the large flaps of leather freeze out with it and for that, i like better either a shierling lined jacket or a band collar one, but for rain, a double rider jacket or a moto vintage is the best garment there is for me, the double rider has a single flaw for me which is having a hole in the chest area where cold can go into the body whilst the center zipper ones usually get damaged in the zipper area, the front pockets are hard to reach if they're cut straight and not angled, and make kind of a boner - look since good leather is rigid off the rack, hence i like the double rider / biker / Perfecto thing more, just a matter of using a good layer underneath like plaid and having the jacket fitted and the main zipper go all the way up so it protects the body in the best way possible. Greetings

About the wing collars, I've been so far reading that wearing ties with them is outrageous. But I think that it looks really good. It was worn for example by Neville Chamberlain, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk or Ólafur Thors.

I think clothing communicating is an interesting idea. I wonder if clothing can really communicate power, however. for instance, I read the pin collar as communicating precision, attention to detail, and realizing that the small things add up. many powerful people do not exhibit these qualities, however. Limitless' story proves it through the final antagonist's demise
@dirpapa2 жыл бұрын
i know this is defying usual conventions and some may look down on this, but personally when putting together outfits, club collar is much more formal, and i would put in between spread collar and tab collar.
@davidcraggs37709 ай бұрын
I like the forward point collar and the pin collar shirts. However, there is nothing wrong or out of place to wear these styles fully buttoned up without a tie. In the UK a lot of guys including myself sport that look. It’s called the “Invisible Tie” look, a style worn by Ryan Gosling. I wear it all the time, but never go “Open Neck” .

Wing collars are also good for ascot cravats, and wearing them with a necktie makes you look like an early 20th-century butler. There's also a collar even more formal than the wing collar for white tie called the imperial collar. You can see them in Downton Abbey and they're basically a wing collar without the wings/flaps, so they are super stiff and tall and uncomfortable.

Those Cut Away collars would look nice with a tie that has a different fabric between the blade & the tail. Why are all ties solid fabric? The in lining would look nice around the neck (the tail) while contrast to the blade fabric. Do you know what I mean???

Button down and spread collars are the ones I like.
@364245672543 жыл бұрын
agree. I hate most pointed collars (which apparently american people love) because the collar point doesn't even come close to tucking into the jacket, making the shirt look disproportionate and somehow wrong. Still, I only like button downs which have a generous roll. Spread are the easiest to get right I find (and more versatile if you wear ties often, which I don't).

You missed one rare, but imo most beatiful casual style: the "one-piece" collar. Check out e.g. Yeossal which has one of the most beatiful rendition (which they call "swallow collar")

"Spread collars are not for tuxedo's"? This is incorrect. Spread collars v semi-spread (among turndown collars) are considered the more formal of the two for classic Black Tie.The spread version is more formal because its tips are hidden under the jacket lapels - be they peaked or shawl, or, God forbid, notched.

Wing collars are really only acceptable for white tie if they're detachable. It isn't practical to starch an attached collar to the proper degree of stiffness. Wing collars with black tie make you look like a waiter, particularly with an attached wing collar, an appearance supported by the fact that the majority of these shirts are sold by restaurant supply stores. It should probably also be noted that any bow tie worn with a wing collar needs to be sized and not adjustable, since the entire neck band is visible.
