I used frozen water bottles for my fog chiller - that way you car reuse them by freezing them again. Great job!!!!

The input "vent" is for air inductment, somewhat similar to how a dyson fan works. It does not work in your case because you have the fog going into a large chamber and then having it ooze out and exit port. If your pipe went through the chiller box without filling the box with fog it would work. Basically if you had a long pipe the fog would shoot out and have to push against all the air sitting in the pipe. The entry "vent" allows the fog to pull outside air that is at the same pressure as the air in the pipe, so it has less resistance shooting through the pipe.

Yep; An induction nozzle works well on my Trash Can Chiller which uses a continuous aluminum tube from entrance to exit. The one thing you want to make certain for any style fog chiller or ducting system, is that you place the fog machine nozzle 2 to 3 inches away from the inlet of your tubing. This allows the fog to pre-expand and increase in velocity, giving you a much fuller volume of fog at the exit of your device.

Putting it slightly more technically: there is a pressure p at each point in the pipe system, and the pressure gradient accelerates the gas, while pipes slow it down by friction (they act in a way as a resistor - Hagen-Poiseuille law). Now, if you have a gas moving at a certain velocity v inside a pipe, its particles move more in one specific direction than in all the others, so they don't move in the perpendicular directions as much (due to energy conservation). Hence, the pressure in the pipe is lower compared to an outside gas which isn't moving. This is what we describe as the Bernoulli equation. If you now drill a hole in the pipe (or stick another pipe perpendicularly to it), you get a positive pressure difference from the outside to the moving fluid which (given by the Hagen-Poiseuille law applied to the air sucking pipe) will suck in air to the given gas stream. However, if the resistance of the pipe (or fog chiller in this case) becomes large, then there will be a negative pressure gradient through the hole to the outside (because the fog machine creates a pressure difference on top of the dynamic pressure coming from the velocity of the stream), effectively making the fog blow out there. To be able to suck in more air, you'd somehow need to get the resistance in the fog chiller down - e.g. using bigger pipe diameters, spread out the ice, use a bigger exhaust, eliminate as many angles in the gas flow as possible (to minimize disturbances). Then also, I'd suggest using some valve to be able to control the diameter of the air input. Another simple option would be to screw a strong enough fan (PC fan or the like, with speed regulation) on top of the air input (while gas sealing the connection between the fog machine and its pipe). That would allow you to drive the fog chiller by pressure while still infusing air. (Note that in this case there would be a certain minimum fan speed at which the fan just compensates the pressure that the fog machine creates, and any speed above that would infuse air to the system.) The fan method would also be helpful to generally increase velocities inside the chiller, preventing condensation of fog and therefore making the device slightly more efficient.

My dad and I built a chiller when I was a teenager in the mid 90s. We used an old Coleman cooler and made a tube of hardware cloth so the ice wouldn't block the intake and out vent holes. We made pvc elbows curve up to the top of the lid so we can set the fog machine on top of the cooler. I still have the thing 😂

Great idea, looking forward to trying it! We found some low cost fog enhancing tricks as well. Scatter ice all over the yard; it makes a huge difference in keeping fog low and dense. If the yard has a slight downgrade, try making a solid trail of ice and watch fog flow like a stream down the lawn.

An alternative method is to use flexible ducting tube for the interior. Make it snake back and forth several times, then clamp it with adjustable ring clamps to pvc pipes on each end. This will improve the overall airflow while making an airtight and waterproof interior.

For the input , just use a straight tube and don't press the fog machine right up to the intake, just distance it about 2 inches or 2 fingers from the intake. The flowing smoke will create a venturi effect into the container , little to no fog will spill out and it will suck in more air.

This looks much more compact and neater than what we created - I need to compare the effect. We used a large black trash can. We cut two holes in the sides almost at the ground, ran dryer exhaust hose through it and dumped ice all over the top of the hose. The cold was able to penetrate the flexible hose. It was inside a garage so we had to also rig up an exhaust fan and put an overflow bin below the trash can to contain water, but it worked well.

I’m guessing the reason they recommended the Y fitting on the inlet was that they were putting their fog machine very close to the inlet and a fog machine needs to mix the output vapor with air to get max output. The cheaper (because you don’t need a Y fitting) and easier way to achieve this is by leaving a 1-2” gap between the output of the fog machine and your inlet pipe.
@johndef001
@johndef001 2 жыл бұрын
You describe an example of the "Venturi Effect" where the faster moving gas from the fogger entrains air from surroundings. You could even do the reverse, use a source of cold & fast-moving air to simultaneously entrain and cool the output from the fogger. Your method may be the best way to go, because more elaborate arrangements can put back pressure on the fogger, causing it to wear out sooner or produce less fog. KZbin has a lot of examples of DIY Venturi applications but some are way more complicated than you need. "DIY" and "Make Your Own Venturi Tube" are good searches to start with. The drawing here (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qICthWlrhLiZjJI) is a good example of a basic Venturi Tube. The video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJKcgIWejs-pgLc has a nice, brief discussion of the Venturi Effect in general.

I saw your fog chiller tutorial first, then searched KZbin for some alternate options. I almost made the style with open holes in the container, but I decided to watch your video one more time to see if it was explained, why you opted to use PVC for the output. I think I figured out why, but it doesn't really matter because I realized this was a better option for me because I'm in an upstairs apartment, and it will be on my front patio. The people using the open face style, are probably putting these in their grass or somewhere with runoff. If I put that on my patio, there would be a waterfall into my downstairs neighbor's walkway by the end of the night.

Also, a small computer fan installed at the exit pipe would push out every last bit of fog. Because a lot of fog stays in the machine/hose (or in your case storage bin)

Suggestion for improvement: Combine the fog machine with an Ultrasonic Mist Maker. Some water with ice in the box. And a Ultrasonic Mist Maker into the box. The fluid from the fog machine mixes with the fog from the Ultrasonic Mist Maker and the fog becomes even heavier. Oh yes, and built a little too complicated. Instead of the exit at the bottom, you could also make the exit at the top and then route the fog downwards (on the outside). This would save you having to seal it, which would certainly not work reliably in this form.

If you put a fan in it on the exhaust it’ll pull air and fog in for a clean mixture.

I keep the ice in the bag, so that way you don't have to worry about any leakage, plus you could reuse the ice after it melts refreeze it and then use it again the next night 🎃🔪

You could make that box hidden behind a tombstone or make looks like a crate or something.

Heh, imagine asking your neighbors on the corners to set up a few of these. Let it carry up and down the rest of the street. Put a few in the middle for good measure. Now EVERY house has spooky fog!

My cousin lives in a townhouse style development in an urban area (they still have font yards though) which is where me and him do a Halloween display. The first year we decided to invest in a 1000 watt fog machine and it put out way more fog than expected, pretty much fogged out the entire block lol. It was sick (but probably not for the cars haha)

That's cool. I got a fog machine and as much as I liked making the room thick and hazy, but it was disappointing it didn't give the erie low rolling in effect. But this project looks like it will fix that for good. Nice job. ... However, did you consider decorating the tub? Though it was painted black to be hidden couldn't you do something better? You could have turned the tub into a tombstone, a mini coffin, and depending where you'd use it like near a dock or a boat, how about a pirates chest or an old lobster trap. The possibilities are endless.

For a chiller of this style, I would think dry ice could work as well and last longer.

Instead of taping the second pipe opening. I would have had a hair dryer on low- mid cool which would create a vacum affect to the other end, and instead of just ice. I would put an old small air conditioner on the side of an insulated wooden box. To house the whole thing;... And come to think of it. I would also descise it as an old noisy wheel barrel, but very cool project, got me thinking on all that. Thanks.
