PLEASE SEE MY UPDATED VIDEO! • How to Make a Faraday ...
To test for minimum REQUIRED 50db protection, you DO NOT need to cover devices with foil or faraday bags. You only need a strong AM RADIO SIGNAL OR SCANNER. However, the only way to know how well it works for sure is with a spectrum analyzer, which most people can't afford. Nevertheless, if the radio signal goes away there is a good chance that the cage is providing about 50dB shielding.
A cellphone has a much stronger signal. If you put your cellphone in without foil and you can't call it, then your cage is probably protecting WAY above the minimum 50dB shielding. Don't expect that to happen, though. It took a bit of work, but I was able to seal my cage well enough to even block that cellphone signal.
To test for even more protection, try using 2 way radios. Wrap one in foil the way I did in the video. If it works, anything put in a faraday bag or wrapped in foil like I did, is likely getting about 100db protection! See Dr. Bradley's link below for more information...
NOTE: If the signal still gets through, you may have to create a better seal of the opening rim of the can. I have a can that has a looser lid. It is a larger can. When I put the tape around the opening, it sealed better.
You can also go to disasterpreparer.com to buy a special seal for this.

It's actually not rubber. It's plastic. It just felt like rubber to me because it is somewhat flexible.
This is Dr. Bradley's KZbin channel. He goes into more detail on reasons use a standard radio and 2 way radios to test the faraday cage.

Great job. Agreed...that steel bucket will stop RFI and most EMP dead in it's tracks. The rubber is what I what use on the inside...non-conductive. Or get a large 31-gallon metal trash can (Behren's $23 at Lowe's), a couple of their blue 5-gal buckets ($3/ea with lids). All for less than $40 and you can put A LOT of sensitive electronics in there.

I see people selling the idea of using a metal ammo box as a faraday cage. I don’t recommend it. I tried it testing it with 2 cell phones. The “shielded” one rang as soon as it was dialed. Looking back I suspect that it failed because of the rubber seal which helps keep moisture out, but can’t block EM radiation. I noticed your cage was sealed every where with metal on metal. Thank for your work and the demonstration.
@LoneStarPrepping

Ammo box will work if you use the tape I used to seal over rubber, BUT dont test with cellphone! Its too strong of a signal. Use strong am radio signal. If that works, you should be getting at least 50db shielding, which should be enough.

This a fantastic idea for a quick-to-deploy system. Grab the handles of the plastic liner tub, give it a yank and you have the contents. We have a larger system in a lined metal container. Some of our flexible solar panels will be stored resting against the insulative lining as a backup in the event other panels become damaged. We truly like your idea for this system so the larger container will not need to be unsealed, simply to get that small item needed that rests in the bottom of the larger container. When I try to explain why it's helpful I use 2020 as my example. Not everyone is into 💩 hitting the fan prepping but when I talk about the stores being stripped in a natural disaster, pandemic or the family getting sick with the flu. If no one can shop it will be nice to have electrolyte drinks/mix, soup, pain reliever, etc.... People tend to be more receptive when I use an experience we are all familiar with. I hope your family becomes receptive to your ideas and help prepare for what may come.

No way to know for sure without some expensive equipment, but it will be close. To get best shielding, do the aluminum thing I showed in the video.

If all seams are sealed, including where the handle is on the lid and sides of bucket... everything sealed from the inside, the only thing I think it could be is the seal on the lid to the bucket. Put some alunimum tape on the edge of the bucket where the lid goes. Make sure that lid is perfectly sealed and it should work. The cardboard seals nothing, so be sure to seal the bottom edge of the bucket from the inside.

I have tested it without tape and it doesnt work as well. If you put the radio in, even without the lid, there is some shielding. If you put it in with the lid but without tape, there is even less of a signal, for sure. However, when taped up, I get nothing. The tape is what I think gives it just what it needs to reach 50dB shielding. I have a can without tape and just tested it... strong radio signal is very weak but still there. Also, with tape, my phone cannot be called. I just tested phone and the signal gets through without the can taped up. Im sure different people will get different results, but Its better to be safe than sorry.

I'm new to this but the devil is in the details. I've already seen videos talking about copper gaskets that have foam for perfect contact with the lid. If this is for EMP attack, you better get this right. A lot of people will find out they had a painted rim and everything is fried. I would read everything I could and take notes, which I'm doing. It seem logical that redundancy is exponentially helpful. Also, rubber in between layers sounds good. People in the coast think they are far enough away from an EMP going off in the center of the country. My first guess is that during an attack, they would set off at least 5. One for the center of USA and four more for each border. You got 1 shot so get it right. Also, plan what goes in and think about the interior real estate and form factors of your devises.

If the can is sealed well enough, it should provide enough protrction. Look at my video about making a faraday cage for solar generator. I dont use aluminum foil. I use emp bags for even more protection if I feel I want it. I buy them from. disasterpreparer.com/product/emp-bags/ Also, a cell phone is not the best way to test the faraday cage.

I did mine with the Behrens Galvanized Bucket 6 gallon and the RECYCLED TUBTRUG 3.5 GALLON, taped up every edge twice over and my cell phone still ran when i called it. However, if I place it in a freezer Ziploc bag and wrapped it with aluminum foil, it stops the signal, without putting it in the bucket. Did I miss a step?
@LoneStarPrepping

That testing is overkill. Just put an am radio in it with strong signal. If it goes away, then you are getting at leasts 50db shielding, which is enough.

What you did wrong was used a cell phone. Please read under the description of the video. Use a strong am radio signal. If it goes away, you have at least 50dB shielding, which is enough. Foil around things just add another layer of protection, about another 50dB, for "just in case" protection. Cell phone has too strong of a signal. It is over testing.

You should not need foil or mylar to protect from emp. You should get about 50db protection without. If you want more protection, you may want a mylar bag as well. Testing with 2 way radio shows how well it protects with mylar or foil because the signal is so strong. If I just put an am radio in without mylar, the signal goes away. This shows enough protection. This is a good test for extremely low power RF Energy, but try placing that bucket near 2000 watts, if its not ground the items inside will fail. You can do this test on your own with a microwave oven large enough to fit the bucket it. Smaller Nuclear type EMPs create 20,000 Kv/m +++. The bucket & liner together can dissipate initially, but without somewhere to dump the energy it will fail. Hope this is helpful Take Care. I have been. Enjoying your solar videos a lot.
