This tutorial ROCK‼️😍 The steps were extremely thorough. Normally, I'd ⏩ through a video ( short ones on mute) , pull out what I want from it, and wing it. I've watched your entire piece with sound🤗Its amazing on all points. I'm going to watch it again , and work along with you. I already have my supplies! I'm so excited!!!! Kudos, you're a crafting queen.

I can also see making two more loops at the bottom of the lining, attaching D-rings to all the bottom loops and spring clasps to the ends of the paracord, and then you can turn your bag inside out for four looks. You'd just have to attach the spring clasps to the set of rings you are using.

So cute!! I guess you would say I'm a beginner (I've only been sewing on a machine for a year but hand-sewing and embroidering for twelve years; starting at five years old), so this will be quite fun to make and looks very easy! As soon as all of the snow and ice melts off, I'll be investing in lots of sewing supplies (rotary cutter, cutting mat, lots of pretty thread, etc.) so hopefully this will be a breeze :) Thank you, Jen, for the beautifully put-together tutorial!

I love this pattern! I used a cut off of some of my brother’s new curtains that he needed taken up. I changed the sizing and it worked just the same. I'm one of those who actually DO the projects, and not just watch them. ;) So I need to make sure I'm doing it right, as well as the instructors. The bag that you show at the beginning and in the background has a dark gray at the top. That is the one I would prefer to make. How should I go about doing that? I hope you reply soon so I can make this one for a Christmas gift. Thank you! I LOVE your directions by the way!

Hi Jennifer Minnick! You can easily re-create this design. We just stacked two of the FQs 14"x15" pieces and made a cut, then sewed the smaller pieces onto to the opposite fabric. (You may want to do this prior to trimming your 4 pieces to the 14"x15" size to allow for seam allowance). Hope that makes sense! 💖 -Michelle

9:30 -- You could very easily baste/tack the loops by machine, onto the right side of one of the pieces (at the markings), before you sew the two outer pieces together. That would take just a couple of seconds and hold them for you when you sew.

This is a great tutorial!! Thank you for such a thorough explanation of each step. 😊 One question. Why is the accent piece shorter than the width of the bag?

The accent piece is shorter than the width of the bag because it makes it possible for all of the work to be turn so that the seems are hidden mdooms76!

I loved the tutorial. Great for my granddaughters ballet classes. I noticed your sample bags had pockets, but nothing was discussed in tutorial. Any written instructions for the pockets on the outside?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 7 жыл бұрын
There are no written instructions on how to add the pocket, unfortunately. You will choose what size you want your pocket, fold the top edge under a quarter of an inch then press and sew an 1/8 inch top stitch all the way across. You will then fold the three remaining edges under a quarter of an inch and press. Place the pocket where you want it on the outside of your bag then use an 1/8 stitch to sew around the left, bottom, and right edges being sure to back-stitch and the beginning and end. You will add the pocket to the main body of the bag before you start the lining process. Please let me know if you have any questions!

This bag is really cute and going to buy some muslin so I can make them and tie die them with my grand daughter who is 3. The only thing I wanted to ask is would it be better to may fuse some light weight stabilizer to at least one set of fabrics. either the lining or the outer bag. For more durability. Thanks. First time watching.

That is such a great idea! The light weight could help as a stabilizer however, we have not made it like this though so we cannot guarantee its outcome. Merry Christmas! 🎄~Leah

I just finished my cinch sack!!! I only made one mistake - I sewed the lining on all four sides...rip rip rip...but I fixed it! I used ribbon instead of the rope (couldn't find it in my store nearby). I also think if you use ribbon, stitch 1/2 inch from the top edge so that when you uncinch the sack you don't have to fuss with evening out the rope :) Thanks! Great tutorial!!!

I work with paracord a lot n it's easier to burn/ melt the ends prior to working with it n also the end left on the remaining spool/ length ur not working with to prevent fraying, also if u melt the ends prior to working with it u might not need the safety pin to push it through as it does harden after melting n end, n also after tying a knot u want to b sure to cut the tail ends sticking from the knot but leave a small tail to melt to the knot, n a lot of the time I heat the knot itself to help prevent it from ever coming undone, paracord is n amazing material to work with also u want to use 550 cord not the smaller 300's one as the 550 is thicker n more comfortable resting on ur shoulders, but great video I'm so going to make a bag like this as the strap broke my pocketbook recently n haven't found the perfect replacement in my price range lol but for now I borrowed my roommates draw string bag

What are the dimensions of the fabric if you want to use to colors like the bag in the center with the solid gray and the patterned bottom (the bag in the center). Thanks
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Kimberly, great question! The dimensions will be the same for your lining (14 inches wide and 15 inches tall). For the lining you will cut one piece that is 5.25 inches tall and 14 inches wide and another fabric that is 10.25 inches tall and 14 inches wide. Then sew them together along one of the 14 inch sides using a quarter inch seam allowance. This will create the two-toned front panel. You can choose to repeat this for the back as well or just do the front! Then the rest of the bag will be the exact same assembly process!

Hello, I love your Tutorials in general as they are easy to follow and cute. I enjoyed making this drawstring backpack very much. I made some to take when I ride the bike. I gave one to my daughter and she asked me if I could make her one with a zipper along one side seam so as to reach in it when it is still on your back. How should I do that ? I wouldn’t be able to use the techniques shown on this tutorial for the casing and the turning inside out ? Anyway really great and professional project. Great teaching !

I bought "Fat Quarter" Star Wars panels that were on sale at Joann's. My husband wanted me to make pillows out of them for our friends Grand sons but they are printed vertically, the panels are 18"w X 21" L, weird looking pillows. Came across your video and decided to make the boys backpacks instead! I'm wondering if I should use a slightly heavier material for the lining or should I sew in fuseable to hold the lining to the outside?

I seem I seem to have missed something for the casing for the drawstring you take the two pairs and saw three sides leaving one long side open and stitching each open side to the lining and the outside of the bag what are you sliding the cord through in the end if the two short sides of the casings are sewn shut I'm missing something
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 жыл бұрын
+Ruth Freeman it's understandable how that step is a little confusing! As you can see from about 14:43-15:19 she shows the sewing of the three sides that you mentioned but then that sewn piece is folded in half which creates the "tube" which the strings slide through. She then goes on to explain how to attach that folded piece to the bag leaving those ends of the tube open. That tube is lined so even though the two pieces are sewn together (lining/outer) they are not sewn shut. Let me know if that helps clarify any issues- I would be happy to explain further if needed! Sometimes it helps to watch a certain segment a few times if it is a little unclear the first time through.

Jennifer, the straps that we cut 3” x 13” and that are sewn to the body of the bag at the top of the bag. I used a 1/4” seam allowance to complete these top straps but when I went to pin them to the top edge of the bag, I am not getting a 1/2” on each side of the bag as you stated, my straps are an 1” shorter per side. I don’t know why as I cut the fabric accordingly, so does this make a big difference?

Hi Mireya, My apologies for the late reply. This video was recorded quite sometime back to it requires us to review the video so we can respond. If you are getting a different result I don't think that will make a big difference. Did you have a chance to put the bag all the way together and if so, how does it look? :) Jen

Is there a way to make the casing for the drawstring without lining, I am considering making these bags for my child's class as autographs bags and need to make 23 trying to save a little money. Thanks for any help
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 жыл бұрын
+Kimberly Little you absolutely could alter this project to leave the lining out! Obviously you will not assemble the lining portion so just skip over that part of the tutorial. The top section where the rope/drawstring goes through will just be sewn onto the the outside of the bag rather than sandwiched between the lining and the outside. For that step, line up the top section with the bag turned inside out, as Jen shows, and sew it on according to the tutorial (ignoring any mention of the lining). You will then turn your bag outside-right and will have an unlined version of this bag. Let me know if you need clarification on any part of these instructions!

You'll want the raw edges lined up with the top of the bag so when you turn it right-side-out you've got the nice crisp, enclosed folded edge at the top of the bag, raw edges will be hidden inside. :)

Please tell me how to cut with a rotary cutter and not have the top of the ruler shift. When you cut you are holding onto the ruler on the bottom part of the ruler and you cut up and your ruler doesn't move, so you get an accurate cut. When I do it, the ruler slides to the left and I get an inaccurate cut and then have to clean it up. What is the trick? I am new to sewing. Thank you so much.
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 7 жыл бұрын
The trick is to not push too hard against the side of the ruler while you are cutting, but just barely use it as a guide. That way you aren't pushing the ruler to the side and it won't shift.
