I look at all of this with amazement. The idea is so cool, and it looks so mesmerizing in action. I would love to do the game with esthetics of this display and ferrofluids. I can not do the display itself. But what I can do, is simulation of it. Note for future me, to create such simulated display or similar, and the game with ferrofluid esthetics :-P

Why base bath in alcohol rather than distilled water?

Thanks :) Yeah, it’s only salt and distilled water. We saturated the water completely (at room temperature) by adding salt until it stopped dissolving. We also filtered the water a few times through a coffee filter afterwards

@@AppliedProcrastination Hi. What is the concentration of salt in. did you get the water? Does the salt then precipitate in water at the maximum saturation of the solution?

We haven’t measured the concentration, but like I’ve said before: we saturated as much as possible at room temperature, so the relative concentration should be very close to 100%. There’s no visible precipitate in the solution (if there is any it is obscured by the ferrofluid), but some salt has managed to escape through cracks in the tank that were not sealed well enough.

Hello, you mentioned that you tested 4 types of treatment: lab grade acid, lab grade base, regular vinegar and "nothing" for control, but I cannot find a conclusion, could you please tell me which way is recommended?

Yeah, unfortunately the results were inconclusive, so we went with the base without doing further investigation. We found that leaving the saltwater in the tank for 24 hours before adding the ferrofluid was maybe just as important as the treatment (ie. the base treatment doesn’t work if you don’t do this), but we don’t know whether this is also true for the other treatments.
