I was originally planning on making a table like this from three 4' x 2' MDF sheets. That way it can be stored against the wall taking up very little space, but can have one leaf up for a 4' x 4' gaming table (good for small groups or skirmish games), or both leaves up for a 6' x 4' gaming table (good for large groups or some proper wargaming). But I think rather than leaves, I've gonna have the sides be detachable with folding legs. That way there the leaves won't be in the way for sitting around it.
@BigMekDanskull7 жыл бұрын
Looks like you've built yourself a really versatile table, great job! I'm not one for DIY, so it's probably not going to be an issue, but I'll be interested to see how the hinges cope over time. I imagine there's a fair bit of weight hanging off them when the flaps are down. Great project overall, the little finishing touches like the lip around the edge really make it top notch!
@BlackJackLegacy7 жыл бұрын
Cheers Dan - Its the first major thing I've built so I'm happy with how it turned out. I watch a lot of woodworking youtube videos and spent time looking at similar style tables in Ikea to understand what the hinges could manage, how many I'd need and how the gate legs work so I'm pretty sure it'll stand up to the job. :D

You really should have made it 8×4 as it would have folded better
@BlackJackLegacy5 жыл бұрын
Why would it have folded better? Each drop down side is 2’ long and the centre is 3’. If I’d made it 8’ then the ends would have either hit the floor when folded down or the centre would have had to be bigger and it would have taken up more space. The extra foot to make it 7’ is great to put things on but it’s not needed for gaming.
@tommothedog5 жыл бұрын
But if the middle is 4ft wide then the wings should have been 2ft, surely?!
@BlackJackLegacy5 жыл бұрын
tommothedog the centre is 3’ long and the ends 2’. That makes it 2’ + 3’ + 2’ = 7’ long. The whole table is then 4’ wide making it 7’ x 4’ when opened up and approx 3’ x 4’ when the ends are folded down.

Great video dude, and a really impressive table, especially as you say it's not your normal thing you do. This is pretty much what i need for my studio, i was looking at Ikea first, as probably everyone does but the only table close to this seems to be way too small in height and width. So it's videos like this that can inspire hobbyists to make their own or at least get an idea. Im hoping that someone on etsy or a local carpenter can do mine!:)

Mate! This is the most elegant design I have seen for a folding games table. It solved the problem everyone else had with the table droop at the ends. You didn't mention it but I also liked the bevelled edges on the wood borders for when the extensions were raised. Were you ever tempted to put a drawer on the bottom frame for storage of common use items in your gaming? Things like dice place mats for cups or drinks etc..

Pretty swish; liked the shots with different games on it. My only suggestion other than a second layer of paint would have been to use locking castors on two of the legs on one side of the table so it is less prone to movement when knocked of leaned on. Less of an issue on carpet so hopefully it will be ok! If you still plan on adding magnetic sides to the 4ft edges, pud additional magnets under the table side so you can store them underneath when you use the table flaps.

Nice work mate. My tables are functional but tired, being 12+ years old. The only thing stopping me from building a new one is my ambitions... Simple has done me well for more than a dozen years and now i want super fancy... Simple will do for a few more years i think. I do like the gate leg though, neat way to support the ends. I totally would have been scheming a way to have the extra edging for the 3x4 be articulated by the movement of the wings, so again, never would have got off the ground ;)

haha never one for the easy path eh mate? This is my first table so hopefully it'll last me long enough until my skills get good enough to come up with something fancy too.

BlackJack Legacy the easy path for me was to use thinner 2'x4' mdf on thicker framing the sit them on top of a 6x2 tresstle table. The whole lot was collapsible to flat pack 2 such 6x4 tables into a '86 holden barina so I could take them across town to my gaming group at the time. Wotked perfectly for the use case and i dubbed them 'por-tables' which was fitting cause they were bot portable and cost less than $100 nz each... at the time probably less than 40 quid ;)

This table is phenomenal, I'm absolutely stealing this idea for my own hobby table! One question though - is there a slight upwards angle when you have both sides extended? It looks like they go up and away from the center table creating a slight incline towards the center; how would you go about avoiding that in future builds? And do you think the thickness you used for the legs/gate legs/support struts is sufficient, or would you recommend going a bit thicker in order to add more stability?
@BlackJackLegacy7 жыл бұрын
+Nick Powell - hey Nick thanks for the very kind words. With regards to the slope do you mean when it was shown outdoors? If so then this was due to the unevenness of the flag stones outdoors. In reality there's no upwards slope and I used a level to measure this when making the stops for under the gates legs. This would be where you can alter the height when fully extended. There's also a little movement showing on the indoor shots but this was due to not having the top fixed to the bottom at that point. Too impatient to get it videoed! Strength on the legs is therefore fine I think. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thanks so much buddy. Really glad you found it helpful. What games do you play for an 8’x3’??!
@dukedelacroix50455 жыл бұрын
@@BlackJackLegacy exactly what games are 8x3. I stuffed it up haha. Star Wars Armada is 6x3 so I can play that at least. I can also set up Zombicide and games like that on it. I'm going to make a foldable 6x4 insert that will sit on top so if I want to play Warhammer I can do so and I'll have a foot each end for cards and books.

Legion is 6’x3’ too if you fancy giving that a try. I like having a little space for bits too so the extra space is never wasted.

Forgive me, but what is the board you use for the stand/base and swing supports for the sides? Is it 2x4?
@BlackJackLegacy3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the wood for the base legs etc? Yeah it’s 2”x4” dressed pine softwood.

Pretty much completed our game table, the 1"x2" boards weren't going to work for the top edge, I'll return those 3 pieces & pick-up some 1x3's, that should give us a 1-1/4" edge around the game board top. The 1x2's only allowed a 1/4" edge, not enough to stop the dice from rolling off the table! Here's a link to a pic & thanks again BlackJack Legacy for sharing your ideas: www.dropbox.com/s/3dt26zspyi8o9q2/Game%20Table.JPG?dl=0

Just watched the video....great build...looks superb....did you end up making the magnetic edges for the middle section? Do you have any issue with rolling with the casters? Cork was a Masterstroke..
@BlackJackLegacy7 жыл бұрын
i haven't just yet but only through lack of wood and time. I will do soon though. No issue with rolling on the casters either but the carpet keeps it in place during gaming. If it was on a wooden floor I'd have put locking casters on. Cork wasn't a bad idea was it :)

Just catching up on some of your videos so a bit late to this party, sorry. Great build, looks very achievable for someone with minimal skills too. You must have been proud when it all came together at the end. Good job! Did you add the magnetised end pieces or another coat of paint? Personally, I find the black a bit too much but it's your table, not mine so that's not a criticism, just an observation.
@BlackJackLegacy5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. I was pretty proud. I'm by no means a woodworker but I'm handy enough to put this together. I actually never did add the magnets but I did give it another coat of paint. If I did it again I think I'd just stain the wood but at the time all the furniture in my games room was black so this fitted well.

Put a ply top the same Size as Bottom leg section's top area so you can use as a table when not Gaming and you need a KREG tool for all those Pocket holes 8) , you should use some Wood Glue as well, Nice job .
@BlackJackLegacy7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting Jeffrey. The table is in my hobby room so doesn't really get used for anything except gaming but it's a great shout if you need it to double up its use. I considered a KREG tool but as I do no woodworking other than making this table I found this an alternative solution. I did use wood glue too - I think you can see the bottle in a couple of shots. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏼

Is there some form of lock for the gate legs? I certainly have a few slightly uncoordinated friends who i could see kicking it closed while walking around the table, sending one of the hinged panels crashing down!
@BlackJackLegacy7 жыл бұрын
Hi HShaud - there's a wooden block that stops it coming out too far and makes sure it sits in exactly the right place. The legs are well out of the way of being knocked however it would be really easy to put a swivel block on which would move out of the way when opening the gate leg and turn into position to lock it in place. I have a few upgrades to make so I may add that and show it in an update video too. Thanks for watching and commenting and don't forget to subscribe :D

Hi MrChapster. Its called a pocket joint I think and the tool for doing it properly is called a pocket hole jig. I've never done anything like this before so I googled "what is the best way to join two pieces of wood together?" - yeah honestly! I found this tip and it worked great :D
