In this video I'll show you how to craft a full table of textured boards to play with your minis on for under $20! Great for Warhammer, D&D, or any other tabletop miniature games.

One month update: Hey everyone! Just wanted to give a heads up that over time with temperature fluctuation in the studio some of the edges on these have started to curl a little bit. I've solved this by keeping them weighed down slightly while being stored. They still work great in game, but require a little extra love and care to keep perfectly flat over time.

I must be paranoid from youtube. When you said "First thing to do is to protect your workspace", I expected ad for VPN :D Nice video, hope your channel will grow.

I used 12mm MDF for my modular Kill Team board to stop any warping, but used your texturing method. Im really happy with the results 👍🏻

Question - Would a Spray Paint work for the initial base coats? Or would you recommend doing the same style you applied? Video is super helpful! Keep up the awesome work man!

Nice video. I haven't done this with foamboard but I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work. Still it's a theory because I haven't done it with foamboard. You should mix modpodge and black paint for the first coat. Pva may work but it's easier to reactivate with moisture, especially problematic if your going to apply a wash. Once you do the top and sides let it dry then do the back. Put weights on it and once the back is dry it should be sealed. That will not only cause it to not warp when you paint it but also make it more durable. Good luck and thank you for the video.

I wonder how you would go if you used a black yoga mat and added your texture to it, then you could roll it up and take it with you

These game boards look incredible. I would be interesting to see what they could look like if you had a bigger budget, and not sticking strictly to Dollar store goods. It would also be interesting to see a Sci-fi or Fantasy settlement board; with streets, roadways, alleys, etc.

With a bigger budget for these I would definitely go with something more heavy/solid like plywood or MDF board from the hardware store. Cut it in half or in quarters for easy storage and follow the same steps for the painting portion! I may do something with roads in the future, I like things to be modular when possible though so I'll have to do some thinking on the angle I'd like to go with them. All in all though I've been using these with no issue and am happy with the results :)

@@PerilsintheWarpLaminate flooring from the hardware store! You can get a 40x60 piece cut for around $7. Then you can roll it up like a battle mat

Thank you for that awesome video and the ideas. But wouldn't using "normal" syrofoam solve the warping issue? I mean.. you are painting it anyways, so no real need for a black surface ?
@PerilsintheWarp

I mainly kept the paper on for stability and hardiness, might snap in half with such a thin sheet of foam. You could probably glue two foamcore sheets together though to get around that and avoid the paper, might need to try that :)

You used readyboard for this project. The paper comes off. If you paint the foam without the paper it should not warp nearly as much. Also you get modpodge at the dollar tree for the same amount as your pva glue and you will have loads less warping.

I kept the paper on with these to give them more rigidity, the foam by itself could probably just snap in half. Will have to keep an eye out for mod podge, I haven’t seen it at the dollar store but could have missed it!

@@PerilsintheWarp it’s in the crafting section next to their acrylic paints usually. Black paint and modpodge will do wonders to toughen up the boards. If you want to take it to the next level you can go to the same section and get some fabric and glue them to the back on 3 seams so that it folds up like a board game and takes up less room when not in use. Another option in the hardware section they sell spackle that can add texture to boards and also some of the other modular terrain that you built. Also not saying that you should do things differently but I would recommend using your tips and tricks for other games beyond 40k. It lends itself to D&D, stargrave, pathfinder, starfinder, battletech and so much more. People are hungry for this content beyond games workshop
