Fantastic - gonna build two like this in my garden as a DIY project. Got the tools just not the joiners workshop. Looked at loads of vids on building gates on youtube and this was the best for someone of my pay grade in diy joinery - thank you

As soon as I saw the bird feeders and the tea mug I knew I was on safe ground; a British joinery video. 😊 Came for the bracing part and got the answers I needed - many thanks. 👍 🇬🇧

Proper craftsmanship, good to see someone building something that will last probably a couple of lifetimes if necessary... 👍

Im trying to find where you actuslly show how to make this?

Nice job, my old Grandad was a joiner he always said the angle between the bottom rail and the brace should be greater than 45° and make sure both ends of the brace have full contact with the rails otherwise you are just adding additional weight on the hinges and not supporting the gate. What do you guys think?

How were the braces attached to the ledge?

Great vid. Any tips on measuring the gap so you know what size gate to make i.e. hinges etc....

58:06 That's what I came here for, how to cut a brace even if the square isn't quite square! Didn't realise about the direction of the brace either. Good job I checked here first.

Hi, so if I had to make a driveway gate which would be 1m in height and 2 metre wide then the bracing angle will be way less than 45 degrees angle. Should I have to make two braces on the gate.

This was great. For the money it must of cost would have wanted the nice side on the inside! Next video make a double sided one!

An excellent video and I really appreciate all the tips along the way (there were many that I was reminded of). Just one question about the tongue and groove - did you cut off the tongue on the extreme left hand plank and also cut off the groove on the extreme right hand plank?
@marcusg17203 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes i planned the tounge off of one side but i left the groove on the other, if i found it was going to be tight then i would of just planned the groove until it fitted and re planned the bevel edge. Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot I’m a DIYer and want to make my own gates so this has been just what I wanted. When measuring the width of the gate between posts what sort clearance do you allow? Thank you. 👍🏻
@marcusg17203 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, i actually kept a 10mm gap each side, i found that it still closed up a bit in the winter but still a good gap. Just make sure the gap isn't so big that the latch or lock wont reach the keep on the post.

Really good video, just one question. When fitting the T&V boards, do you close up each board really tight or do you leave a bit of tongue showing to allow for swelling? I've seen FLB doors bowing out in the middle. Thanks 😊
@marcusg17203 жыл бұрын
Hi there,I normally use a 1 or 2mm packer for spacing in-between each board for swelling and shrinkage. It's also the reason that it's important to paint all the touches before assembly so that you don't bare timber showing. Thanks.

What size timber were you using for that project? Thanks

It's all very well making this gate in this way but how much did you charge the customer for 3 days of work on just a side gate?

The going rate in the UK is about 4 grand and a quick shag of his missus
@MKRM272 жыл бұрын
3 days? You won’t get much work, if you work at such a slow pace.
@tl76264 жыл бұрын
hi, this is really helpful. Just wondering how long this took you to make just so i get an idea
@marcusg17204 жыл бұрын
Hi there, it took me about 3 days to put together but would of been quicker if i wasn't filming and setting up camera shots etc. Took my time painting it after that though.

Hi Marcus I’m making a gate this weekend and been watching your video, do you mean the braces have to be greater than 45 degrees for them to work ? In other words more vertical and horizontal ? thanks 😊👍🏼 TerryTheMaker
@marcusg17203 жыл бұрын
Hi there, the braces should NOT be more than a 45 degree angle other wise gravity will still pull the side of the gate downwards. There are a few different ways of moving the braces inward to create a less degree angle.
@Terrythemaker3 жыл бұрын
@@marcusg1720 thanks Marcus, I think I’m there 👍🏼 I’ve posted on my Instagram if you want to check, I bought myself a angle finder ruler 📐 and I’m 47 degrees if taking the angle from the base, so in other words it more more upright than horizontal, 43 degrees angle from the side of gate. In mind that should be right to help against gravity. Plus I went to take a look at a timber yards ready made gates and they were more towards vertical then horizontal if that makes sense. Thanks for the advice, 😊
@foolsgold9533 жыл бұрын
The braces need to be no more than 45 degrees from the vertical stile, other wise they are counteracting against the integrity of the structure.
@Terrythemaker3 жыл бұрын
@@foolsgold953 thank you, thats exactly what I thought, I’ve got them at 47 degrees upright, so they are more upright that horizontal, I’ve just posted on my Instagram actually.

Can you let us know what the thickness and width for each type of timber please?
@marcusg17204 жыл бұрын
Hi, so the top rail and styles are 4x2 prepared, the middle rail and braces are 4x1 prepared and botton rail is 6x1 prepared. The t&g is 22mm thick to bring it all to the same thickness as the styles. I hope that helps.
