You Can't Eat The Grass

You Can't Eat The Grass

Күн бұрын

The very first time I went to put together a bouquet for the farmers market, I had to do a google search to figure out what to do. But, now, 4 years later, I feel confident with the tricks I've picked up from the experts, and by experimenting with my personal style. I walk you through how to make a great bouquet everytime, no matter if you are using fresh local flowers from your garden, or cheap bunches you can pick up at the grocery store. Understanding the basics of how to make a spiral bouquet, and the elements that you are working with, means that the process is simple. I also share lots of tips I've picked up along the way, so make sure to watch till the end!

I am so thankful for this video. I have been so excited to plant my first cut flower garden, buying seeds like I’m a large scale farmer or something hahaha up until this video I hadn’t considered that I have never done this before…I realized i could be in my backyard with tons to choose from and not know where to start as far and cutting and actually making the bouquets. Thank you for breaking it all down for me. Your an amazing teacher! I know your super busy but have you considered offering online course? Anyways love watching your videos and your your content 🌻 -Team Flowers

I don't think we are at a place to get online courses together, but its something to consider as a winter job next year. The first time I made a bouquet, I had to do a Google search to figure out what to do, lol. I haven't done a crazy amount of research on actual florist tricks, mostly just how to make bouquets, but there are lots of really help simple videos on KZbin. You can make things complicated, but I think just focusing on simple mechanics, and not feeling too intimidated by need to copy someone else's style, is the base that everyone needs to confidently make a great bouquet

But I have seen her love of flowers just grow so immensely...as has mine ❤ I always wonder if I'm in over my head, but quite honestly, I can't live without these beautiful plants anymore. ☺Good luck to you and your daughter in your journey!

NICE!!! I say my market bouquets are made by a thumbs and toes florist! It gives you the license to create bouquets that people are generally going to recreate when they get home sometimes anyway. Fresh flowers are always going to be loved no matter how and who bunches them. We just have to have them.

A good trick before bring in lots of stuff is to do a vase test. Not everything works well as a cut flower. I will cut 5-10 stems of something, and put it in a jar and see how long it lasts. If it lasts a week, then I'll use it for a cut flower. But lots of stuff will only last a day or two, and so those I just enjoy in the garden. Hope that helps!

Actual floral designer here with 12 years of experience Anyone cannot make a $100 bouquet look great. Does $100 look bigger and fuller than a $20 bouquet, yes because it should contain more flowers. And in order for florists to pay their overhead, there has to be mark up which in some parts of the world can be has high as 5 x so somewhere out there, someone made a $100 bouquet with your $20 worth of flowers. If I were to make a $20 bouquet, it would have to have about $5-$7 wholesale and I can assure you it takes a ton of skill to make that little look good. No real designer or florist just throws stems into a bouquet or vase without a thought for the costs but also the type, shape, color and overall design. I've spent two years making designs cut from my garden, they all look just like compositions I would make when given an entire flower market to choose from. It's not about the flowers, it's about what you do with them.

It can be intimidating, but we are always our own worst critics. I always learn a lot by looking at bad examples and seeing the things I don't like about it, then making sure I don't do that myself. It can be hard to see what someone is doing right in the perfect examples, so I find it helpful to approach it in the opposite way.

I like how you cut off the blooms of some of those "bulk" mum flowers to gain greenery. And you have to already know that your flowers are far far better than everything you bought. In my opinion, the spray roses and the berry thing are the best of all of it. I realize and appreciate you did this video for the purpose of showing how you make your bouquets. You made them all look great. I am a little prejudice against mums, I never see them in good shape in the box stores. My disdain possibly stems from being pretty certain any mums available in the winter are from South American countries, but I see them ratty in every season in the U.S. To qualify, it's not an attitude of being against the South American countries, it's about appreciating the use of seasonal local flowers. Well done and thank you.

Great video! You instinctively discovered the florist and landscaper's rule of 3s. For whatever reason, the human mind prefers arrangements with 3s (or any odd number, actually).
@YouCantEatTheGrass
@YouCantEatTheGrass 2 жыл бұрын
I actually cut out a whole section from this video because it's too long, where I was talking about the fact that I'm not strict about the rule of 3s. I find that it works well for the size of bouquet I normally do. But if I'm making a larger bouquet, I keep a similar recipe, and then work with 4s or 5s. I focus more on making things look balanced then on any specific number.

You are a great teacher! Would you considering offering bouquet workshops on the farm in that space

Hi Serina!! I love the idea of a fresh and dry flower arangement....i am curious how you store it having a mix of both. The fresh would need water but the dry flowers don't like water? Congrats on your success thus far!

I was taught to cut flowers under water so air bubbles in stems don't block water from being sucked up. Maybe that's just for roses. You make a mean bouquet! I'd pay $30 for your arrangements, Serena. Just a suggestion: cut stems before adding rubber band.

My mom taught me that too, as a kid. I wonder about it though, because obviously that's never happening anywhere along the production line before it gets to a customer. They would be cut off the plant, then shipped out of water, and I doubt any florist would be bothering with cutting anything submerged. I guess you'd need to do a side by side comparison to see if it makes any difference
