I had a marketing professor who liked to tell us that you don't need to market to people who are looking for what you are making. You need to market to the people who do not know the value your product will add to their life. This video is just that. I never would have said to myself that I think I want to see Marty and Moog make hammers, but I sure did enjoy it and it definitely made my day a bit better.

It's funny how hard it was for me to wrap my head around phases of iron and heat treatment methods when I was in materials engineering class and in 35 seconds this man just explained the fundamentals in a way anyone can understand. What a legend.
@CountPantsulon
@CountPantsulon 2 жыл бұрын
That's probably because they were teaching the "why" when all you need to know is the "what." (The "why" is quantifiable, which lends itself to relaying specifications for mass production at a remote location, while the "what" is a learned skill.)
@jdselders8010
@jdselders8010 2 жыл бұрын
@@CountPantsulon I disagree, I think we just needed the lab to take place concurrently instead of weeks later so we could observe and measure the changes in hardness, toughness, and brittle fracture characteristics to make it stick. The point of my comment was just to compliment how clearly and succinctly he explained the process of manipulating the grain structure of metal in a way that was easy to understand even with no context and without holding back technical concepts like the crystaline structre, austenite, martensite, etc.
@CountPantsulon
@CountPantsulon 2 жыл бұрын
@@jdselders8010 That's a fair point. I'm familiar with the difficulty one can encounter when there's too much time between theory and practical classes, having encountered that during my apprenticeship program. I agree that he summed it up beautifully.

Cool Video! I really like KZbinrs who make stuff. Alec Steele is a great blacksmith who I really enjoy watching. The satisfaction you get from making something from scratch and that sense of accomplishment is such a cool feeling. I wish more people these days had the confidence just to give something a go. For me, I’ll try most things and if I fail at it (I try not to get too frustrated…) then at least I learned something for the next time I try it. Anyways 👍🏼

Allen keys is something I have found that the perfect hardness really matters on. I have a nice set that I have never managed to round the corners or damage it at all but the shafts also have enough flex to them to really reef on them. So no rounding off and not shattering either.

ive done some very simple smithing just to screw around and learn, and it's fascinating how they manipulate the metal and the chemical content. old tyme smithies were anything but simpleton dullards! really amazing process turning rocks into iron, and iron into steel, and steel into things that we use every day, without even thinking about how it got there. (sort of like those people that think a can of corn comes from the store instead of starting in a field being harvested by a farmer in a big machine!)((and yes i know what those machines are called, i grew up on a farm, i ran them!))

"Nice grain like a wagyu steak" You'd be surprised how true that comparison can be! A normalized piece of steel, when prepared for grain analysis (polished and attacked with an acid) will show a marbled pattern similar to steak! Forget about it after hardening though, it will look like a pile of needles. That's martensite's shape.

I could help... if you're ever down in Adelaide... But it's good fun and you don't need a full on workshop to build a guitar, though a few certain machines (that you can get at bunnings) and a few job specific tools (that are a bit harder to get) definitely help
