You get to the crag, open your pack, and no harness!! I know that would never happen to you :) But if it did, you could do this...

Man, you guys are so made for each other. Please guard what you have with your life. I wish I would have done that. Nice to see that again.

Great video! When I started climbing in 1970 we didn't have harnesses. We either tied directly into the rope, with three passes around the waist and a bowline, or used one inch webbing wrapped repeatedly around the waist. If you fell, the rope went tight around your waist. It was uncomfortable. We later made Swiss seats with tubular webbing. This was great! Then I bought my first climb harness. A Whillans Sit Harness. It was more comfortable than today's climbing harnesses. Because it's loose around the legs.

The bowland/bowline knot is used because it won't slip and choke whatever the line is wrapped around, like most other knots will do.

I only use a military harness commonly called a rangers harness or swiss seat....I personally use a continuous loop that I spliced as a harness .... ...and a second loop as a chest harness ..... I find them very comfortable if you use larger diameter rope ..... you can use wide webbing as well just use a water knot to join the ends

If you forget your harness and have webbing, def use webbing over rope. John Long art of Leading has a description of how to make a harness out of webbing.

Add a loop from front center over shoulder to back center back over other shoulder to front center and you can do everything... Swiss seat is better easier and Imho what I use all the time

the knot that starts the bowline is a marlinspike hitch, thats the way I was taught to tie it and have done it since a youngun.

Could have done a bowline on a bight for the one around the waist. Skips a step or two.
@davidevans75425 жыл бұрын
That would work but you can’t tie a bowline on a byte around something you would have to slip it around you. I would suggest a French bowline
@slavapal00za11 ай бұрын
That’s a cool short cut for a bowline, but it doesn’t actually finish as a bowline. The tail should finish on the inside of a bowline loop, not on the outside. I wouldn’t trust this as a life saving knot. I am basing this on testing the technique your boyfriend described and it’s very clear to see at 2:27. Otherwise, I appreciate the tutorial.

A good skill in case of an emergency e.g. an extreme example would be if you were trapped in a burning building and had to get multiple people down.

Just fyi, you could have tied a double bowing knot and had the same result with one knot, maybe I'm wrong, I'm not a rock climber but I know my knots

Why do Americans end words that end in ile or ine like ill or in. The e at the end of the word tells you that the i should sound like eye. It infuriates me. Mobile should end like bile, not ill. and Bowline should end like line, not lin. I can't bear listening to Americans for that reason. They do similar but the opposite with Nikon, as in Nikon cameras. The Americans say Neyekon. It's wrong, totally wrong and absolutely terrible and horrible use of the English language.
@jakecroft32293 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, I'll try to be less american when I talk now! Great example picking the name of a Japanese company as an example of the correct way to speak English, could you give me a tip on how a British person might say Toyota or Subaru? I'm worried I might be saying them wrong too

really awful demonstration of the most important part. The thing that is "basically the whole harness" you messed up on, and then turned away from the camera, used a second person and explained nothing to complete it. Wow.
