@@resinAce my husband has attempted a similar golf ball resin project years ago. The golf ball appeared to have expanded from the heat during the curing process then when it cooled it separated from the resin creating a void making it look like it had a giant air bubble around the whole ball. It wasn't though they took great care to get all the air bubbles out of it. Question being what happened and how do you prevent it? Thank you for any input.
@resinAce5 жыл бұрын
@@katemcclure6959 Did he use epoxy resin or polyester resin, because it sounds to me like he might have used polyester resin, which shrinks as it cures and can pull away from the surface of shiny objects like a golf ball. This creates a mirrored effect, which would look like an air bubble surrounding the object. If he can't remember, ask him if it was flammable and smelt really bad, if it did then it was polyester. If he did use epoxy resin, he needs to control the exothermic reaction to prevent it getting too hot. This basically involves pouring smaller amounts of resin in layers, and waiting for each layer to firm up before pouring the next. Some epoxy resins are better suited to deeper pours than others. Check the datasheet and it should give you a maximum pour depth for that resin type.

Hi I'm new to these crafts and want to give it a try. Can 8 ask please why you use a lighter and did you let each pour dy before you added more resin
@resinAce3 жыл бұрын
A lighter will pop any surface bubbles. If you pour art resin too deep it will overheat and spoil, so you must cure it in layers. You can get some special resins for deep pour casting, but even then they usually only go up to 2 inches deep.

I have a question please. If I want the effect of a transparent sticker suspended in the paper weight: would I pour one layer, let it dry a enough to provide a surface for the sticker, then pour the remainder? I don't know what happens when you pour 2 inches of new resin on top of 2 inches on partially dried resin.. 🤔
@resinAce5 жыл бұрын
Hello, yes, that is what you would do. You need to make sure your resin is suitable for casting to those depths first. This should be mentioned in the technical datasheet for the resin.

Very nice project. However I just have to say this is the first time I have seen you miss air bubbles as well as not push your dome layer all the way to the edges. So that leads me to ask if after the dome has fully cured is it possible to go back and add a touch more if you missed a spot in the dome without it looking like a patch?
@resinAce5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching 😎 I filmed this video in a very short space of time, so with 5 individual resin pours I had to speed up the curing in an oven. Whenever you mix resin without vacuum degassing there will always be tiny bubbles, which are barely visible to the naked eye. When you pour the resin into a silicone mould, the static attracts those bubbles to the mould, which is why they're always at the edge. When you put the resin in an oven, the heat expands the bubbles to make them appear larger, which is a negative side-effect of the process. The dome layer did go to the edge, but the edge was a little uneven in places, which is probably what you're noticing. I think the moral of this story is 'don't rush your work' 😎♠️

When you say boil in the mold does that mean create bubbles? I mix my resin pretty well, with no bubbles but when I pour the resin in the moldlittle bubble start to form on the mold walls and then I can get rid of them. How do I fix that or prevent that from happening?
@resinAce3 жыл бұрын
When bubbles appear from nowhere, that usually means you had tiny micro-bubbles trapped in the resin, which expand and get bigger as the resin heats up as it cures. The static in the silicone mould tends to attract them, which is why they always appear on the mould walls. They are difficult to deal with without a pressure tank. If you spot them while the resin is still fluid, you can dislodge them with a toothpick and pop them with a flame when they reach the surface.

The instructions on my epoxy state maximum depth of 10mm.....I know they vary from product to product but I wanted to ask how often do you think I could pour another layer based on 10mm depth of a internal 65mm x 65mm cube like in your video. Hope you can help!
@resinAce5 жыл бұрын
Hi, my usual epoxy art resin also has a maximum pour depth of 10mm, which is why I do the larger cubes in layers. You just need to wait until the previous layer has firmed up, which could take a few hours depending on room temperature. Just be aware that when you pour in layers you will always get faint witness lines between the layers, which are most noticeable when viewed from the side.

Hi, thanks for the great comment. Yes, I have mishaps, I once posted a fail video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpevoqiia6aghac but then unlisted it because it performed badly 😢 If you dome in the mould, the static in the silicone can attract the resin and cause it to breach the edge. Resin will generally release from a silicone mould without a release agent. I never use a release agent with silicone moulds and never had a problem. Just don't use alcohol to clean the mould because alcohol breaks the surface tension of the silicone and then the resin will adhere to it.

Is this including the room temperature? Also how do you cure the mould? Do you put it through a UV cured light? And also how long do you need to cure the mould before putting another layer on. Please help out. Sorry if these questions are silly >.
@resinAce5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. Every brand of epoxy resin is different, so you need to read the specifications for your own resin to know how much you can safely pour in one go. My resin is better suited to shallow pours, which take a few hours to gel at room temperature before doing another pour on top. The finished cube is left to cure for 24 hours before unmoulding. UV light is not required for standard epoxy resin to cure.
